From establishing boundaries to involving your child in their own goal setting process will be just some of the topics we’ll explore. Dan’s sense of humor and life experience will certainly make this a memorable and valuable luncheon for our parents. I invite everyone to attend. A light lunch will be served. We have an exciting year ahead and invite you to take an active part in our PAC! Your support and active participation will greatly enhance your child’s experience in Junior High school. There are many opportunities for you to volunteer at Arroyo Seco. We especially need help during our one big fundraiser, the Magazine Drive, which occurs very early in the school year. After that, there is PAC, Eyes and Ears, Team activities and trips and, of course, our evening activities and performances. Our library is another excellent place to volunteer. It is an active busy place on our campus and we’re short staffed in there this year due to the recent budget cuts. Another important way you can support your child’s education is to help them stay organized. You can help by checking for homework completion and showing them how to get and stay organized. With six classes and six different assignments, use of the Binder Reminder is imperative. Take advantage of this tool and ask to see what your child has been assigned and to see the completed work. Get everything ready and packed away in the backpack the night before to avoid morning madness. Soon your child will be an independent learner. Thanks for sending us your finest. We are enjoying working with your children. Let’s have an awesome year! Rhondi Durand, Principal Issue Number 1 August, September, October, 2015

From the Principal:

Welcome to a new school year at Arroyo Seco! We opened our doors on August 13th to over 1230

students. Our teachers, counselors, support staff, custodians, and district office personnel worked very hard

during the days prior to ensure a smooth opening day for Seco students.

Challenging and engaging learning experiences were immediately evident as students met their team,

elective and physical education teachers. Every student received an orientation by either Mr. Miller or Dr.

Nicholas, our assistant principals, within the first two days of school. Ms. Dielentheis, Mrs. Ward and our

newest counselor, Mr. Jesse Marshall ensured that all students were properly scheduled. Thank you to all our

parent volunteers who distributed class schedules on the first day.

Our staff spends many hours thinking and working together to develop and continually improve our

curriculum delivery and instruction. We analyze our students’ progress and achievement and constantly look

for ways to maximize learning. We teach critical life skills our students will need in order to be successful in

our knowledge-based society. In order to give our teachers quality time to work together on a weekly basis we

follow a late start schedule on Wednesdays. School starts for students at 8:55am on Wednesdays. Our

minimum days and all other important dates to remember are listed in this publication.

We are looking forward to the continued support and participation in the learning process from our

parents. Our PAC (Parent Advisory Council) will have 5 meetings throughout the year. Our first meeting will

be on September 14th at 12 noon. We encourage all of you to join us for lunch and meet our administrators

and counselors. Our special guest speaker and facilitator will be Dan Williams. Dan is a life coach and mentor

as well as a parent himself. He will collaborate with us around ways we can better help to prepare our students

for success in the future. From establishing boundaries to involving your child in their own goal setting

process will be just some of the topics we’ll explore. Dan’s sense of humor and life experience will certainly

make this a memorable and valuable luncheon for our parents. I invite everyone to attend. A light lunch will be

served. We have an exciting year ahead and invite you to take an active part in our PAC!

Your support and active participation will greatly enhance your child’s experience in Junior High

school. There are many opportunities for you to volunteer at Arroyo Seco. We especially need help during our

one big fundraiser, the Magazine Drive, which occurs very early in the school year. After that, there is PAC,

Eyes and Ears, Team activities and trips and, of course, our evening activities and performances. Our library is

another excellent place to volunteer. It is an active busy place on our campus and we’re short staffed in there

this year due to the recent budget cuts.

Another important way you can support your child’s education is to help them stay organized. You can

help by checking for homework completion and showing them how to get and stay organized. With six classes

and six different assignments, use of the Binder Reminder is imperative. Take advantage of this tool and ask to

see what your child has been assigned and to see the completed work. Get everything ready and packed away

in the backpack the night before to avoid morning madness. Soon your child will be an independent learner.

Thanks for sending us your finest. We are enjoying working with your children. Let’s have an awesome

year!

Counselor’s Corner

Welcome Parents to a new school year!

We are here to help your student and you navigate through the ups and downs of junior

high. For many of you, this is the first experience you have had working with a

counselor! We are here to help. Your child's counselor is affiliated with his or her team

assignment:

Mrs. Ward – Extreme, Fusion and Odyssey

Mr. Marshall – Genesis, Revolution and Triumph

Ms. Dielentheis – Aloha, Viper and Special Education

One of the many questions parents have is how our credit system works. Each class your

child takes each quarter is worth 2.5 credits. Students earn credits for grades of A, B, C

or D. Failing grades do not earn credits. Fifteen credits are available each quarter and 60

credits are available each year totaling 120 possible credits. A student is required to earn

107.5 credits by the end of 8th grade to officially promote to high school and participate

in the end of the year activities. Students struggling to earn credits can attend summer

school for 10 credits. Intervention classes may also be available.

Another question frequently asked is how does 8th grade performance affect high school

placement. Eighth grade is a pivotal year and it is extremely important that students do

their best. Students are placed in classes based on classroom performance, grades and

teacher recommendation. Honors classes are available in English, Math and Science.

For English, the majority of students are placed in English 9. Honors English is available

for students earning A’s and completing the letter of intent. Math 8 students will

complete their algebra studies in ninth grade. Students earning A’s in Math 8, will be

placed in Honors Algebra. All other students will be placed in Algebra. Current Algebra

1A/1B students earning A’s will go to Honors Geometry, students earning B’s or C’s go

to Geometry. Repeating Algebra is recommended for those who struggled with the

course. Science placement is based on performance, teacher recommendation and

English and math placements.

We are looking forward to working with you and your child!

From the Attendance Office… Now that school is in full swing the Attendance Office would like to remind all our

parents and guardians of a few things that will assist everyone in ensuring that your child

is able to maximize their learning time here at Arroyo Seco.

1) The easiest ways to excuse absences are with a quick phone call to the school or a note

brought to the Attendance Office.

2) If you send a note to school with your child to excuse an absence or authorize an early

dismissal for a doctor/dental appointment please have your child take that note to the

Attendance Office, NOT a team teacher.

3) No parents or guardians should be meeting their child during nutrition, lunch, or

between classes without having first checked in with the Attendance Office and obtaining

a visitor’s pass.

4) After two (2) weeks, “Unverified” absences will become “Unexcused” absences and

may cause your child to be assigned consequences at school. Phoning the Attendance

Office or sending in a note with your child can easily clear these absences.

5) Remember that school starts at 7:45 AM. Please help us ensure that your child gets to

school on time and is ready to learn!

6) Our automated telephone system will call you if your child has missed two (2) or more

classes and has been marked “Unverified”. Please feel free to call the Attendance Office

if you receive a phone call that you believe is an error. We would be more than happy to

assist you clear up any confusion.

If you have any questions concerning your son’s or daughter’s attendance or need

clarification on any of our attendance policies, please call our attendance technician, June

Higgins. She is always happy to assist you!

Page 7: Partnership Middle School Seco Gram Seco Gram 8_28.pdf · Partnership Middle School Seco Gram _____ From the Principal: Welcome to a new school year at Arroyo Seco! We opened our

Health Office Procedures

When a child becomes ill at school, he/she will receive every care and

consideration. A Parent/Guardian will be contacted. With so many students and

little space in the health office we ask for your full cooperation in picking up a

sick child in a reasonable amount of time. We do not have the accommodations for

a child to sit in the health office for an extended period of time, and generally

he/she will need to return to class after approximately 15 minutes. If, however,

a student is deemed quite ill, he/she needs to be picked up as soon as possible. If a

parent/guardian cannot pick up the child, and an emergency contact cannot be

reached, the parent/guardian will need to make arrangements with a relative or

friend, and convey this information to the Health Technician. It is our goal to

maintain the health and safety of every child.

The following guidelines were written as an indicator for a need to send a

student home, or for a student to be kept at home:

Fever: A temperature greater than 100 degrees. Student should be fever free

without medication for 24 hours before return to school.

Upper Respiratory Infection: The student with a cold/cough who show

symptoms of fever, tiredness, irritability, not eating well, or signs of

earache, sore throat, thick, yellowish or green nasal discharge need to be at

home.

Undiagnosed skin conditions that may be contagious.

Diarrhea: Students with watery diarrhea or frequent loose stools.

Nausea/vomiting.

Seizures lasting 3 minutes or longer without intervention and/or are

different than usual.

Communicable Diseases

If a student is suspected of being infected with a communicable disease, (e.g. pink

eye, chickenpox, head lice), a parent/guardian will be notified to pick up their

student from school. If a physician diagnoses your student with a communicable

disease, Arroyo Seco Junior High must be notified immediately.

Page 8: Partnership Middle School Seco Gram Seco Gram 8_28.pdf · Partnership Middle School Seco Gram _____ From the Principal: Welcome to a new school year at Arroyo Seco! We opened our

Medication: Prescribed, and Over the Counter (OTC)

If a student is required to take Prescription Medication or Over the Counter

medications during school hours, a Request for Medication to be Taken at

School form, must be completed by a Physician, and signed by a Parent/Guardian.

Prescribed medication includes over-the-counter and homeopathic medications as

well as vitamins. Only certain prescribed medications may be carried and/or self-

administered by the student. These medications include: auto-injectable

epinephrine, asthma inhalers, and insulin. This form is available on the District

website or from the school Health Office.

The “Request for Medication to be Taken at School” form must accompany the

medication, in its original container, clearly labeled with the student’s full name,

physician’s name and phone number, name of the medication, dosage, schedule,

and date of expiration. Over the Counter medications, such as Tylenol, Advil,

etc., are included in these guidelines as well. It is the Parent/Guardian’s

responsibility to keep track of the dose count and expiration dates, as well as

inform the Health Office Technician of any medication changes. Any student

found with medication at school without the appropriate forms on file in the health

office, will have their medication confiscated, and will be released to a

parent/guardian only.

Physical Education Excuse

All PE Notes MUST be turned into the HEALTH OFFICE as soon as

the student arrives at school. PE notes SHOULD NOT be taken to the PE

teachers/coaches, they MUST be given to the Health Technician.

A parent may write a note excusing a student from PE for one to three

consecutive healing days maximum. If a student is not able to participate

in PE in excess of three consecutive healing days, a note from a physician

is mandatory, showing the duration of time the student cannot participate

in PE. If a student can participate in modified PE, (e.g. walking vs.

running, no upper body, etc.), a note from a physician is mandatory and

must state the duration of the modification.

The use of durable medical equipment for student transport such as

wheelchairs, crutches or scooters, as well as medically necessary cast boots,

braces, etc., during school hours, must be accompanied by a physician’s

note stating the reason and duration of use on school grounds.

Please contact the school Health Office for any questions or concerns you may

have. Thank you for your help in keeping our students healthy!

Congratulations

Teacher of the Year 2015-2016

Please join us in honoring Mr. Jon Nez, Arroyo Seco Math Teacher. Mr. Nez was elected

Teacher of the Year by our staff for doing an outstanding job.

From the Office

Messages and Deliveries As stated in the beginning of the school year packet, and the Arroyo Seco Binder Reminder, the office

cannot handle all the requests we receive to deliver messages to students. Please understand that

instructional time will not be disrupted to deliver messages, lunch money, lunches, fast food orders, PE

clothes, forgotten homework, etc. If it is absolutely necessary for a student to pick up a delivered item or

receive a message, your student will be summonsed during nutrition, lunch or after school. We do not

mean to sound uncaring, but important lessons on responsibility can be learned by the child if the parent

does not deliver these items to school.

Off-Campus Policy Arroyo Seco is a closed campus. This means that students may not leave the campus during the school day

without an off-campus pass issued upon the written request of a parent or guardian. Students are to bring

notes to the Attendance Office (not the teacher) before school, between classes, at nutrition or lunch to

secure off-campus passes. If a note is not sent with the child, a parent or guardian will need to come into

the office with a photo I.D. to sign their child out of school. Also, because of the time frame and the

disruption caused by late arrivals, we do not encourage parents to take students off-campus for lunch.

Visitor Passes All visitors on campus between the hours of 7:00 am and 4:00 pm must obtain a visitor’s pass from the

main office. Please do not go directly to a classroom before or after school. Check in at the office first.

The office staff will call the teacher to announce your arrival and to see if they are available. Meetings,

study clubs, and other activities are often planned directly after school.

Dear Parents and Guests,

The staff at Arroyo Seco Jr. High School joins me in extending a warm and sincere welcome to Back-to-

School Night to all our parents and guests. You will have an opportunity to meet teachers, learn about our

Blue Ribbon school, class requirements, goals and objectives, and get an overall picture of the educational

program of which your youngster is a part.

Arroyo Seco's principal, Rhondi Durand, will provide a brief general welcome at 6:10 p.m. Beginning at 6:15

p.m., parents will be able to follow their student's class schedule, consisting of six ten-minute periods

beginning with the "A" period class. Some teams may have a special schedule or meeting place. Please

check with your son or daughter about the locations noted on this flyer in the space provided for his or her

schedule.

Due to the organization of the evening's events, there is not enough time for teachers to meet

personally with parents to discuss individual progress. You may, however, request a teacher or

team conference on the sheets provided in each classroom. Also, please make arrangements for the

care of your children as this event is for the parents.

Sincerely,

Mrs. Rhondi Durand Mr. Cliff Miller Mrs. Catherine Nicholas

This is a program developed to bring parents on campus during nutrition and lunch.

Parents walk the campus during these breaks and simply observe, reporting any unusual

behavior to campus supervisors. Since implementing this program students have

mentioned they feel safer. Simply having more visible adults, acts as a deterrent to

inappropriate behavior. For the parents it can be quite an eye-opening experience,

campus life has changed quite a bit since we were that age.

Every parent is a member of PAC, but we rely on your membership donations, we

suggest a $10.00 donation per family. This year, we already have approximately

$4,000.00 to support the programs listed here. If you didn’t get the chance to donate at

registration, and you are interested in doing so, you can place your donation in an

envelope, label it “PAC” and turn it in to Kathie Loughlin, our ASB secretary.

More information will be available soon!

Welcome back to school! I’m very excited to be starting

off a new school year at Arroyo Seco with all of you. This

is the beginning of my sixth year here and I must say that

time flies when you’re having fun!

I’ve included some helpful handouts containing

passwords to the useful databases and many other

programs we use at school. There is also information

about apps that may be helpful to you and your child.

Our big Library events that take place throughout the year

are the Box Tops drive, book fair, and textbook returns.

The book fair will take place in March this year, during

the week of Open House. I am also participating in the

Ralph’s Community Contribution Program. It would be

greatly appreciated if you would enroll your Ralph’s card

and designate Arroyo Seco as the beneficiary.

Instructions are on the following pages.

I am going to be running a yearlong program “Read Your

Way Across the USA”. I’m eager to see how many books

our students can read, and hopefully expand their

horizons as they explore different genres and places.

Feel free to contact me at [email protected] if I

can be of any assistance. Happy reading!
