Each year ABARES convenes the Outlook conference - the agriculture sector’s premier information exchange and networking event for public and private sector decision-makers.

Outlook 2018 is on Tuesday 6 and Wednesday 7 March in Canberra and I invite you join delegates from across industry as we can gather to examine the outlook for agricultural industries, the short to medium term economic trends as well as the broader issues that are significant to the sector.

The Outlook 2018 conference will connect leading national and international speakers with highly motivated and information seeking delegates at 15 sessions across two days of intense focus for agriculture. Outlook 2018 is focused on the outlook for Australia’s agriculture sector, including the complex influences that will shape international markets and demand for Australian agricultural commodities and produce over the coming decade. Across the sessions, delegates will hear more about the growth opportunities for Australian commodities, and the challenges and opportunities for exporters in a globally competitive and evolving market.

At Outlook 2018 the program and participants will combine to provide something that no other event can offer - a unique combination of public and private sector perspectives, and the latest agricultural analysis and forecasts.

About ABARESThe Outlook 2018 conference is convened by ABARES, the Australian Bureau of Agricultural and Resource Economics and Sciences.

ABARES is the research arm of the Australian Government Department of Agriculture and Water Resources. Our mission is to provide professionally independent and world-class multi-disciplinary research, analysis and advice to inform public and private sector decision-makers on significant issues affecting Australia’s agriculture, fisheries and forestry industries.

ABARES has a wealth of expertise in applied economic and scientific research, including innovative modelling techniques, undertaking comprehensive surveys and internationally recognised data management processes. The bureau also provides integrated socio-economic and biophysical analysis to address the policy issues facing Australia’s primary industries today and into the future.

In contributing to policy development, ABARES examines the full range of options available to policy makers and may enter into public discussion on its research findings and on the consequences of different policy options. ABARES takes a collaborative approach to research and policy analysis, working with external experts and partners, including the CSIRO and the Centre of Excellence for Biosecurity Risk Analysis.

Our staff possess skills across a range of economic, science and social-science disciplines, including in the areas of scientific and economic analysis and modelling, data (including survey) collection and statistical analysis, risk assessment and management, geographical mapping, particularly in areas related to natural resource management, commodity and market analysis, and integrated analysis.

About the Outlook 2018 conference

The annual ABARES Outlook conference is regarded as the leading agriculture, fisheries and forestry forum in Australia for public and private sector decision-makers.

The theme for Outlook 2018 is Creating value in an increasingly connected world.

Leading these conversations will be a range of national and international speakers – a rare opportunity to have around 70 speakers and chairs and more than 700 delegates across 15 sessions across two days and all focussed on meeting the challenges facing Australia’s primary industries.

The conference dinner on Tuesday evening will focus on innovation and initiative. Recipients of the 2018 Science and Innovation Awards for Young People in Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry will be awarded for their innovative projects that will benefit Australia’s agriculture sector.

And in between conference sessions, the trade stand exhibition is open where delegates can talk to exhibitors, understand their services and consider how those skills and expertise can benefit their own work environment.

Outlook 2018 will attract delegates from a range of sectors, each seeking market leading information, analysis and insight to plan for their sector’s future as well as the opportunities to forge new professional contacts.

Outlook delegates are decision makers, influential and drawn from the public and private sectors – all levels of government, banking and finance, research and development agencies, industry representative groups, tertiary education sector, regional development and NRM groups, food retailers as well as producers.

According to our 2017 delegate survey, 71% nominated the opportunity to ‘network and meet delegates’ as a key reason for attending, followed by 57% nominating ‘to hear speakers’. 45% of delegates noted the ability to acquire and update data and information as a key reason for attending. Individual comments ranged from ‘to hear other people’s strategic and tactical responses to the challenges thrown at Australian agriculture’ to ‘gives a good overview of a number of agriculture industries from a range of perspectives.’

As to their employment profile, 21% each identified as ‘policy and government’ and ‘research, development and extension, 19% as ‘banking and finance’, and 16% as agriculture/fisheries/forestry production. This reflects the diverse and multi sectoral appeal of the ABARES Outlook conference and the sessions showcased.

88% of delegates would recommend the Outlook conference to a colleague. When asked about which sessions delegates rated as the most valuable to attend, they highlighted the top three as: Economic overview (65%), Global perspectives on agriculture (46%) and Digital innovation in agriculture (37%).

other than China. • Climate change - great to see specific data on yield potential v. actual yields, the challenges it

creates for the industry. • Meat session - finally a speaker that had real life application of technology.• Excellent presentations; highly informative; very knowledgeable presenters.• Interesting to hear views of the big picture international economic developments and

the likely implications for Australian agriculture.• There was new thinking in these sessions, not just a repeat of things we’d heard before.• Information on the current financial status of agriculture in Australia and what new

There are three plenary sessions and each is offered as an exclusive opportunityEach session will be held in the Royal Theatre, National Convention CentreThe Economic overview is the keynote session of the conference and draws the largest audience. Leading economic analysts will set the scene at Outlook 2018 by presenting the global commodity overview, agricultural investment opportunities and the outlook for the Australian and international economies over the short to medium term and the implications to agriculture.

This session coincides with the widely-publicised release of the March 2018 issue of ABARES Agricultural commodities publication.

The Innovation in agriculture: future food choices panel discussion will explore how technology and societal developments could transform consumer choices, demand and distribution and, in turn, drive on-farm and supply chain decisions.

The changing regulatory framework in Australia’s export markets session will focus on changing priorities for consumers and governments in our export markets and how the Australian agricultural sector will need to prepare to compete in these markets. Consumers globally are increasingly aware of the sources, ingredients and quality of their foods, and are making decisions based on factors other than price. Governments are increasingly contending with issues such as animal welfare, chemical use, food labelling and the environmental footprint of food production as they work to support the safety of their food supply and contend with the pressures of consumer groups.

Each session will generate strong media interest, particularly given the profile of the invited speakers. We anticipate the plenary sessions on Tuesday and Wednesday mornings will be proceeded by ministerial addresses.

Exclusive opportunity The Outlook 2018 delegate directory is an essential reference tool provided to all delegates, listing the contact details of most delegates for post conference conversations. The professionally designed brochure will include a one-page introduction from the ABARES Executive Director and a designated representative of the conference partner, plus the opportunity for a one-page black and white advertisement.

Arrival drinks, conference dinner Investment: $3,500 (GST inclusive, plus food and beverage costs)

Exclusive opportunity Welcome delegates as they arrive for the conference dinner on Tuesday 6 March with arrival drinks and canapés. An information table will be provided from where you can distribute information, show bags and other products. A brief two to three minute speaking opportunity is available at the conclusion of drinks and before delegates are invited to move to dinner. You may wish to launch the latest report, showcase products from industry, or explore other ways to connect with delegates.

Food costs are to be met by the conference partner. Proposed activities will be discussed and negotiated with ABARES. ABARES will promote the function and partner activities to delegates through the conference program, website and a series of promotional emails, Twitter and Facebook.

Delegate conference bag productInvestment: $6,000 (GST inclusive) plus item cost

Exclusive opportunity Outlook 2018 will be busy for delegates, with multiple sessions over two days, the conference dinner and numerous networking opportunities. Limited opportunities Each delegate receives a satchel with conference material, including notepad, pen and a copy of ABARES March issue of Agricultural commodities.
