PARTS OF SPEECH

I. NOUN

I.1. DEFINITION

A noun is a word which is used to represent a person, place, quality,

thing, action, idea, occurance, and can function as the subject os a

sentence or as the object of a verb, the object of a preposition , or as

an appositive.

The examples from the above definition are as follows :

a. Person

Each underlined word in the following sentences is a noun related

to people and function as a subject or as an object of a sentence.

1. Nadine is a medical doctor.

2. A police captured a smuggler yesterday.

3. Students are studying.

4. Mother and farher want the nurse to stay home.

5. Jacob and Mary have two children.

b. Places

Places may refer to all kinds of places, including common name,

such as city, island, earth, mount, river, office, house, sea, planet,

etc, and proper noun such as Bali, Japan, Sumatra, Australia, New

York, England, Everest, Red Sea, Atlantic, Venus, Hilton Hotel, etc.

Each of underlined words in the following sentences is a noun

related to a place and function as a subject or as an object of a

sentence.

1. Bali is one of the famous tourist destination in Indonesia.

2. My office is at Sumitomo Building on Jalan Sudirman, Jakarta.

3. Jakarta is the largest city of Indonesia.

4. There is a swimming pool next to the beach.

5. America is the richest country in the world.

c. Things

Things include something that substantively exist whether it is solid

or liquid such as animal, sugar, oil, water, sand, tree, car, food,

etc., many kind of gasses such as smike, air, steam, etc., and

something which substantively doesn’t exist but it is conceptually

understood and has a particular quality such as ideology, religion,

dream, behavior, concept, feeling, expectation, sound, truth,

appearance, news, profession, etc.

Each of underlined words in the following sentences is a noun

related to substantive things or unsubstantive things and can be

used as a subject or as an object of a sentence.

1. Sugar is one of the sources of carbohydrate.

2. Most of Asian countries use rice as their staple food.

3. We need a car to lift this furniture to our new house.

4. The gas of this liquid is flammable.

5. Water will realease steam if it is being boiled.

The examples of nouns related to the un-substantive things but

conceptually understood is as follows :

1. The ideology of our movement is based on the universal human

right.

2. Truth was the basic of the verdict made by the jury.

3. It is a good idea to follow his advice.
