LONG NIGHTby Theresa Whitehill

It's been a long nightand now that we're adding blue

back into the palette, now that we're—oh—managing to understand

how it is with light, why it betrays useach afternoon only to come blushing

back innocently with jasmine petalsoftness, its tender hubs of automobiles

painted dusty rose. Now thatwe've given up on stability, restlessness,

motion sickness, it fills our lapswith mulberries and international

air mail coupons and small chubbyfingers held aloft in artless greed

as if the moon were a rattle drifting downinto our hands and the stone horizon plenty

rapture.

Poet, designer, and letterpress printer Theresa Whitehill lives in Ukiah, California. Information about her readings and letterpress broadsides can be found on her website: www.coloredhorse.com

Poetry THE VAGADOURby Lynn Stoller

In the last few weeks the locals mention him.He paces up and down Highway One

with guitar and pack, betweenFort Bragg and Mendocino,

like in Joan’s hitchhiker song.

His name might be anythingbut no way Bob—you know him.The deep tan and chestnut hair,

chemically streaked with auburn,is set off by a wide mouthed grinthat never quite leaves his face.He might be American Indian,

a vagabond troubadour.Gossip says he’s the vagadour.

No one sees him for about a week, then suddenly he’s back

with a technological upgrade.Pack and guitar now rest in

a plastic milk crate pulled by a dolly.Always leaning sharply into or away from traffic,

no DMV rules for him.

At next sighting he holds a papercoffee cup and his clothes look newer.

Has some patron staked himto potential stardom?

There’s such purpose in his stride.

Today we’re going the same direction, but he’s on the legal side.

I pull over anyway to see what happens. He sizes up the traffic and my van,

then waves his hand in appreciative dismissal.

His look tells me he’s whatthe Sufis call a madzub—

a man mad with god.Loving life as a no-purpose dream,

touched by the magic of theLilies of the Field.

Fort Bragg poet Lynn Stoller has been published inRedwood Coast Review and was an Irving Foundationfeatured poet in Point Arena at City Arts in 2003. Hemoved to the North Coast in 1995 after a varied careeras an Alaskan fisherman, disc jockey, early computerprogrammer, and head shop founder.
