SocietyInternationalConvention(PASIC)toIndianapolisNov.19–22forafour-daycelebrationofeverythingre-latedtopercussionanddrums.Nearly5,000drummersandpercussionistshadtheirpickofover120sessionsastheyreconnectedwitholdfriends,teachers,andcolleagues,andmadenewcontactsatwhatcanbedescribedastheannual“familyreunion”ofthepercussionworld.Theconventionalsohostedover100exhibitorsfortheIn-ternationalDrum&PercussionExpo,theworld’spremiereventforcheckingoutproductsfromthelargestpercus-sionmanufacturerstothesmallestspecialtycompanies.
HighlightsfromPASIC2014in-cludedmanygreatcompetitions,con-certs,andclinics,fromthethunderoftheMarchingPercussionFestivaltothedelicatenuancesofNancyZelts-man’s“sottovoce”concert.Wednes-daybeganwiththesecondannualPASTechnologyDay,whichfeaturedper-formances,discussions,andpresenta-tionsabouttheuseofelectronicsandtechnologywithinthepercussionfield.Wednesdayalsoincludedactivitiesdevotedtoprofessionaldevelopmentforcollegeteachers,andendedwithaFocusDayconcerttitled“ImagesofSound:InnovationsinNotation”presentedbythePASNewMusic/Re-searchCommittee.
FocusDaycontinuedonThurs-daywithseveralconcertsandapaneldiscussion,andThursdayalsoincludedtheopeningoftheExpoHallandawidevarietyofclinicsandconcertsbysuchartistsandgroupsastheYaleUni-versityPercussionEnsemble,ShawnPelton,GreggBissonette,ClariceCast,andFrankShaffer,plusthePASMarch-ingFestival.OnThursdayevening,ArtBlakey,StevenSchick,andGlenVelezwereinductedintothePASHallofFame,followedbyaconcertbytheAmadindaPercussionGroup.ThedayconcludedwiththeRhythmLoungeandaDrumCircle. Saturday’seventsincludedcon-certsandclinicsbyRussMillerandPeteLockett,JohnnyH&thePrison-ersofSwing,AlexAcunaandLuisitoQuintero,ThirdCoastPercussion,LeighHowardStevens,andBillyCobham,alongwithseveralFUNdamentalssessions.TheClosingDrumCircleat-tractedalargecrowd,asdidtheclos-ingconcertbyGlenVelez. OnSunday,PAScontinuedatraditionstartedatPASIC2003bypresentinganall-daydrumfacilitationworkshop,ledbyArthurHull. DuringPASIC2014,Rhythm!DiscoveryCenterfeatureditsnewestexhibit,“NoDrummers,NoDirection:ABriefOverviewofAmericanMili-taryDrumming,1775tothePresent,”alongside“DRUMset:DrivingtheBeatofAmericanMusic.” PASIC2015willbeheldinSanAntonio,Texas,fromNovember11–14.ArtistapplicationsforPASIC2015arebeingacceptingonlineatwww.pas.orgthroughDecember15,2014,andexhibitorpacketswillbeavailableinFebruary2015.RS

tookplaceduringPASIC2014inIndianapolis.ItfeaturedtheIndividualsandSmallEnsembleCompetition,InteractiveClinicSessions,andthesecondyearofthePASICDrumlineBattle. TheIndividualsCompetition,whichtookplaceonThursdayeve-ning,had22highschooland18collegestudentscompeteinthefol-lowingcategories:marchingsnare,multi-tenors,keyboards,timpani,andmultiple-percussion.TheSmallEnsembleCompetition,alsotakingplaceonThursdayevening,hadonlyonecategorythisyear:ahybridofsnareandbassdrums,whichfea-turedtwocollegeensembles:TexasChristianUniversity(bassdrums)andMiddleTennesseeStateUniversity(snaredrums).NealFlumdirectedtheIndividualsandSmallEnsembleCom-petition,assistedbyJamieHaffner,whoalsoservedasatabulatorforthecompetition. ThePASICDrumlineBattlefea-turedeightgroups:fourhighschoolensembles—BenDavis(Indiana),BloomingtonNorth(Indiana),OwensMill(Indiana),andCulverMilitaryAcademy(Indiana);threeuniversityensembles—BallState(Indiana),Cin-cinnati(Ohio),andLamar(Texas);andoneindependentensemble—theJef-

ZildjianCorporation.Moffathadas-sistedwithtiming,penalties,andlogisticsfor23years.Herecentlyunderwentalungtransplantandwasnotabletoattendtheconvention.ThePASMarchingPercussionCom-mitteeaswellasallofthePercussiveArtsSocietywishAlaspeedyandfullrecovery.Moffatisagreatfriendandsupporterofmarchingpercussion,andthePASICMarchingPercussionFestivalwascertainlylessforhisnotbeingthere.

decidedtostayonemoredayforArthurHull’sDrumCircleFacilitationWorkshop.Thegoalofthisfive-hourworkshopwastotrainparticipantstoleadasuccessful,fulfillingdrumcircleintheirowncommunity.Arthur’sinfectiousenergyandthehands-onnatureofthisworkshopresultedinavaluableexperienceforallinvolved. TheSeminarkickedoffSunday,June15withawelcomesession.Ev-eryonegatheredandlistenedasJona-than Haas and Sean Statser took them throughtheweek’sevents. DavidNybergandRayMarchicapresentedthefirstsessionMondaymorning on Mamma Mia.Theout-standingmusiciansprovidedstudentswitharichexperience,astheyofferedinvaluableinsightintotheextensivetechniquesusedforplayingABBA’sfunpoptunes. Onekeypointstressedthrough-outwastheimportanceofkeepingthemusicvibrantandexciting.David’sexpertiseandbrillianceintambourineplayingwasappliedtothecreationofthepercussionparts,whicharestillusedintheshowtoday.Ray’stimewasimpeccable,andtohearhimspeakabouthisapproachtoplaying
eachtunewasinvaluable.Theirexpe-rienceswereinspiringandentertain-ingallatonce. BillHayeshasearnedhisreputa-tionasoneofthehardest-workingmusiciansinNewYorkCity.Inhislonganddistinguishedcareer,hehasperformedwithLizaMinelli,BarbraStreisand,andiscurrentlythepercus-sionistonRodgersandHammerstein’smusicalCinderella.Inhisclass,Hayes
explainedthattherearetwocrucialstepsforsuccessasaBroadwaymusi-cian:“Beagreatsight-readerandbeabletoplaythesamething400timesandstillmakeitexciting.” Hayescalledupseveralpar-ticipantstoperformexcerptsfromCinderella.Astheyplayed,itwasclearthatHayesenjoyedhelpingthestudentsimprovetheirtechniqueandsight-readingskills.Buteven

The show Heart and Lights was settoopenatRadioCityMusicHallinthespringof2014,butwascanceledforreasonsbeyondthecontrolofanymusician.JoshSamuelswontheper-cussionseatforthisshow,andsinceRadioCityonlyuseselectronicpercus-sioninstruments,learnedtheshowontheMalletKATandPanKAT.JoshalsoplayedtheChristmas Spectacular atRadioCityandhasextensiveknowl-edgeoftheMalletKATanditsinnerworkingsandhistory.JoshspokeofhowhewonbothjobsatRadioCity.Attheend,studentswalkedoutwithaninspiredunderstandingofapartofthepercussionworldthatisrapidlygrowinginimportance. Theseconddaybeganwith“Broadway’sSuperSub”KoryGross-man.HehassubbedondozensofBroadwayproductionsovertheyearsfromThe Pirates of Penzance and Por-gy and Bess to Cinderella and Rocky.HediscussedthedemandsofsubbingonseveralshowsatthesametimeandcreatingacareerasaBroadwaysub. “Youhavetolearnyourmusicoutsideofthetheater,”Grossmansaid.Healsodiscussedtheimpor-tanceofsoundingliketheregularpercussionistinthepit.“Youwanttodoeverythingthisguydoes.Listenasmuchaspossible.Yourcreativityisbasedonhowyousoundliketheregularguy,andwhatstepsyoutaketobecomehim.” NextcameJavierDiazandWar-renOdzefromthenewmusicalRocky.Theyfocusedontheirstylistic
approachtoperformingthewrittenmusic.Thepercussionanddrumsetbooksarehigh-energyandheavilyfeaturedinfightscenes.OdzeandDiazrepeatedlystressedthatoneofthemostimportantlessonstheycouldgiveuswastheneedforpercus-sioniststoexploreasmanygenresofmusicaspossible.WhileOdzemayplaydrumsetprofessionallyonBroadwayandDiazmayspecializeinAfro-Cubanmusic,theybothagreedthatitwastheirpassionforallthingspercussion,andallthingsmusic,thatgotthemwheretheyaretoday. ThefinalclassesoftheeveningwerewithWilsonTorresandBenHerman.Torres,whoiscurrentlyapercussionistfortheBroadwayshowLes Miserables,gaveacliniconLatinpercussion.Hetoldtheparticipantsabitabouthimselfandhisstoryasayoungandsuccessfulmusician,andthengavearundownofsomebasicLatingroovesandpatternsnecessaryforpursuingacareerasaBroadwaypercussionist.Bytheendoftheses-sion,everyonewasplayingandcreat-ingwonderfulmusictogether. BenHerman’ssessiontookplaceinNYUSteinhardt’sJamesL.DolanRecordingStudio,andhegavepartici-pantsachancetoexperiencewhatitisliketoworkasastudiomusician.Thestudentsweregivenseveralpiec-esofmusicthattheyhadneverseenbeforeandwereaskedtosight-readthemalongwiththesoundtrack.Oncethiswasaccomplishedtheywould,asHermansaid,“Turnitover,andthenneverseeitagain.” Hermansharedhisownexperi-encesanddiscussedtheprocessofrecordingformoviesoundtracksandcommercials.Hespokeofthejoysof
beingfreefromhoursofrehearsing,butinsteadbeingrequiredtoplayinthemomentandletthemusichap-pen.Thishigh-pressureenvironmentdoesindeedrequireyearsofpractice,andthestudentscertainlygotatasteofthiswhenenteringtherecordingbooth. attheBroadwaySeminarwastrulyawonderfullearningexperience,notjustbecausetheysharedtheirexten-sivemusicalknowledge,butalsobe-causetheyofferedvaluablelifeadvicethateverymusicianshouldhearnomatterwhatdirectiontheyarehead-ingintheircareer. Afteranintenseweekofsessionsandshows,allofthepercussionistswhopresentedreconvened,alongwiththeparticipantsandBroadwaycontractorJohnMiller,forafinalroundtablediscussion.Participantssharedtheirthoughtsandexperi-

educators,performers,arrangers,ad-judicators,andmanufacturerswhosediversebackgroundsandachieve-mentsarerepresentativeofthemanywaysinwhichmarchingpercussion,asanartform,vocation,andfieldofstudy,findsexpression.AmongtheMarchingCommitteemembersareindividualsactivelyinvolvedinWGI,DCI,SwissBaseldrumming,percus-sionmanufacturing,collegemarchingband,highschoolmarchingband,andfifeanddrumcorps.MembersofthecommitteerangeinexperiencefromtwoDCIHallofFamememberstoastudentseekingadoctorateinmusiceducation. PASIC TRAINING TheMarchingPercussionCom-mittee,workingwiththePASEduca-tionCommittee,isdevelopinganactivitytobeimplementedasapartoffuturePASconventions.PASICTrainingwillofferstudentsanop-portunitytoperformrudimentsformarchingpercussionspecialistswhowillevaluateastudent’sperformanceofselectedrudimentsandworkwiththatstudentonimprovingtheperfor-manceofthoserudiments.OneofthegoalsofPASICTrainingistoencouragestudentstoexplorethehistoryandimportanceofrudimentsandlearntoperformall40PASrudiments. Thecommitteeisconsidering
offeringacertificate,badge,orsometypeofrecognitiontoastudenthav-ingsuccessfullycompletedPASICTraining.
MARCHING COMPOSITION CONTEST Inanefforttorecognizeexcel-lenceinmarchingpercussioncom-positionaswellasdevelopresourcestoassiststudentsandeducatorsinimprovingtheirmarchingpercussioncomposition/arrangingskill-set,theMarchingPercussionCommitteehasdevelopedacontestthroughwhichthewinningcompositionisrecognizedbyPASandpublishedbyacompanythatspecializesinmarchingpercus-sionarrangingasoneofitsofferings.Thegenreofthemarchingcomposi-tioncontestaswellasthepublishingcompanywillrotateonayearlybasis.Thecommitteeisconsideringwaystogeneratemoreparticipationinthecontestandmakeavailableonlinecontentforstudents,educators,andenthusiaststhathelpsthembetterun-derstandthefundamentalsofmarch-ingpercussioncomposition/arranging.

TheInteractiveClinicFormatcontinuestobeanopportunityforstudentsanddirectorstoperforminanon-competitiveenvironmentandre-ceivefeedbackfromevaluatorsfromtheworldofconcert/orchestralandmarchingpercussion.2014’sclinicianswereKirkGayandThomHannum.WhenawayfromIndianapolis,thecommitteeseekstokeeptheDrum-lineContestcurrentwiththemanychangestakingplaceintheWGIandDCIactivitiesandcontinuetogrowthe“DrumlineBattle.”

Onedayinthespringof2014,IreceivedamessagefromafriendaboutapercussionprograminGhanadirected
byBernardWoma.Iwasmesmerized.Myimaginationbe-gantorunwildwithvisionsofmeinWestAfrica,playingmusic,livingwithpeoplefromanotherculture,andtravel-ingtoexoticplaces.Iwasallin. OnMay20 ofthatsamespring,IlandedinAccra,thecapitalofGhana.Aftertheusualairportroutine,ItraveledonehoureasttothesmalltownofMedie.ThiswasthelocationoftheDagaraMusicandArtsCenter,myhomeforthenextmonth.HereIwastostudywithBernard,agyilmasterknownforhisskillasaneducatorandhisdeepunderstandingoftheWestAfricanauralmusictraditioninGhana.ThisisalsowhereIwouldspendcountlesshourswithmyfellowpercussionists,dancers,andtravelersfromtheUnitedStatesandCanadawhohadcometolearnaboutWestAfricanmusicandculture. Atfirst,myexperiencesweretrulyforeign.Theweath-erwashotandhumid.ThefoodwasunlikeanythingIhadeverseenbefore.Iwastheminority.Thisfeelingofstrange-
nessslowlydissipatedovertimeasIbegantoimmersemy-selfinthemusic.Takinggyilanddrumminglessonseverydayclosedthegapbetweenculturesbecausenowwewerespeakingthesamelanguageandwalkingdownthesamepathstogether.IbegantodeveloprelationshipswithRitathecook,LuketheKenteweaver,thedanceinstructors,andthemanyfamiliarfacesthatgravitatedtoDagaraforonereasonoranother.WetookseveraltripsintoMedieandAccratoexplorethemarketsandthehistoricalsites,whichallowedmetobegintounderstandtheGhanaianpeopleandtheirculture.Soon,IwasexperiencingallIhadimaginedthisadventuretobe. lessons,dancing,singing,andotherculturalexperiences.Bernardtaughtcountlesstraditionalstylesofgyilplayingtomeaurally.Hewastrulyamasterteacherandmusician.IfeltblessedtobeinhispresenceandsharehisexperienceandknowledgeofthegyilandWestAfricanmusic.HealsotaughtmehowmeaningfulmusicisinthelivesoftheGha-naianpeople.TheKpanlogostyleofsong,danceanddrumisaunifyingforceofthenationofGhana,datingbacktotheirindependencein1957.
UpthepathfromthemusiccenterwasagyilbuildernamedTijan.Heisanartistandamusicianwhosharedhislifewithme.IdecidedIwantedtoownoneofthesean-cientinstruments,soIchoseaninstrumentandheagreedtoteachmethedifferentmethodsofbuildingandmain-tainingit.Iwatchedhowthegyilwascreatedfromrawmaterialswhilehesharedwithmethehistoryoftheinstru-mentandhowtherehavebeenfewchangesinitsconstruc-tion.Driedcalabashgourdsarestillusedasresonators,butcobwebshavebeenreplacedbyenvelopepapertocreatetheunique“buzzing”sound. terwaytounderstandaculturethanavisittoamarket.Herepeopleshowedthatshoppingisanarchetypalex-perienceofallpopulations.LaterintheweekwetraveledtothebeautifulcoastlinesofCapeCoast.BeinganativeofLongIsland,NewYork,itwasrefreshingtosee,smell,andtouchtheocean.WealsovisitedtheElminaandCapeCoastCastles.ThiswasveryemotionalforusallbecausethiswastheplacethatthegreatestnumbersofslavesfromWestAfricawereexportedduringtheslavetradeera.Theconversationsthatensueduponleavingweresostimulat-ingbecauseofthedeepconnectionbetweenusAmericansandtheWestAfricanpeople.Itisanimportantpartofbothofourhistoriesandatragedyforbothofus. BeforeIleftNewYork,Ifilledoneofmysuitcaseswithschoolsuppliestosharewiththechildrenofthemusiccen-ter.TheirgratitudewassooverwhelmingthatIfeltbadthatIdidn’tsharemore.NowIhadanemptysuitcasetofillwithremembrancesofGhana.Bracelets,artandclothingwereboughttogiveasgiftstoallmyfriendsandfamilythatsupportedmeinthisadventure.Ialsobroughthomemygyil,myfreshknowledgeofWestAfricanMusic,andthe
deepvalueoflearningmusicaurallyversususingnotation.Learningwithinthistraditionsparkedinmeaphysicalandspiritualconnectionbetweentheplayer,theinstrument,andthecreationofmusic.Inaddition,IreturnedknowingofthewonderfulpeopleofGhana,theiramazingcultureandrichtraditions.Finally,Icamehomewithanimportantlessonthatfriendscanbefoundanywhereintheworldifyouleaveyourcomfortzone.

TheGeneKrupamodel“RadioKing”snaredrum,manufacturedbytheSlingerlandDrumCompany,wastheirtop-lineprofessionalmodelsnare.Itbeganproductioninthe1940sandwasavailableforseveraldecadesinamultitudeofsizesanddesigns,alwayscapitalizingonthepopularnameofGeneKrupa.Theearlydesignofthedrumfeaturedasolidmapleshellwithreinforcementrings,fullflangeddie-formedmetalhoops,theRadioKingsnarestrainerwitha20-strandsetofsnares,aninternaltonecontrol,andself-aligningrodsandlugs.
