THE END OF MEMBERSHIP AS WE KNOW IT Inkeepingwiththeideaofcom-munity,wewantyoutodefinehowbeingapartofPASmakesadifferenceinyourlives.So,startinginJanuary,PASwillbechangingfromthecurrentmembershipmodeltoanewsubscrip-tion-basedmodel. Fueledbysocialchanges,gen-erationalshifts,arecession-proneeconomy,andtechnology-easedac-cesstocontentandcommunities,wedecidedthatPASneededachangetomeettheneedsandexpectationsofcurrentandpotentialsubscribers. SocietyInternationalConvention(PASIC)toIndianapolisNov.19–22forafour-daycelebrationofeverythingre-latedtopercussionanddrums.Nearly5,000drummersandpercussionistshadtheirpickofover120sessionsastheyreconnectedwitholdfriends,teachers,andcolleagues,andmadenewcontactsatwhatcanbedescribedastheannual“familyreunion”ofthepercussionworld.Theconventionalsohostedover100exhibitorsfortheIn-ternationalDrum&PercussionExpo,theworld’spremiereventforcheckingoutproductsfromthelargestpercus-sionmanufacturerstothesmallestspecialtycompanies.

HighlightsfromPASIC2014in-cludedmanygreatcompetitions,con-certs,andclinics,fromthethunderoftheMarchingPercussionFestivaltothedelicatenuancesofNancyZelts-man’s“sottovoce”concert.Wednes-daybeganwiththesecondannualPASTechnologyDay,whichfeaturedper-formances,discussions,andpresenta-tionsabouttheuseofelectronicsandtechnologywithinthepercussionfield.Wednesdayalsoincludedactivitiesdevotedtoprofessionaldevelopmentforcollegeteachers,andendedwithaFocusDayconcerttitled“ImagesofSound:InnovationsinNotation”presentedbythePASNewMusic/Re-searchCommittee.

FocusDaycontinuedonThurs-daywithseveralconcertsandapaneldiscussion,andThursdayalsoincludedtheopeningoftheExpoHallandawidevarietyofclinicsandconcertsbysuchartistsandgroupsastheYaleUni-versityPercussionEnsemble,ShawnPelton,GreggBissonette,ClariceCast,andFrankShaffer,plusthePASMarch-ingFestival.OnThursdayevening,ArtBlakey,StevenSchick,andGlenVelezwereinductedintothePASHallofFame,followedbyaconcertbytheAmadindaPercussionGroup.ThedayconcludedwiththeRhythmLoungeandaDrumCircle. OnSunday,PAScontinuedatraditionstartedatPASIC2003bypresentinganall-daydrumfacilitationworkshop,ledbyArthurHull. tookplaceduringPASIC2014inIndianapolis.ItfeaturedtheIndividualsandSmallEnsembleCompetition,InteractiveClinicSessions,andthesecondyearofthePASICDrumlineBattle. TheIndividualsCompetition,whichtookplaceonThursdayeve-ning,had22highschooland18collegestudentscompeteinthefol-lowingcategories:marchingsnare,multi-tenors,keyboards,timpani,andmultiple-percussion.TheSmallEnsembleCompetition,alsotakingplaceonThursdayevening,hadonlyonecategorythisyear:ahybridofsnareandbassdrums,whichfea-turedtwocollegeensembles:TexasChristianUniversity(bassdrums)andMiddleTennesseeStateUniversity(snaredrums).NealFlumdirectedtheIndividualsandSmallEnsembleCom-petition,assistedbyJamieHaffner,whoalsoservedasatabulatorforthecompetition. ThePASICDrumlineBattlefea-turedeightgroups:fourhighschoolensembles—BenDavis(Indiana),BloomingtonNorth(Indiana),OwensMill(Indiana),andCulverMilitaryAcademy(Indiana);threeuniversityensembles—BallState(Indiana),Cin-cinnati(Ohio),andLamar(Texas);andoneindependentensemble—theJef-

fersonStreetParadeBand(Indianapo-lis).JudgesfortheDrumlineBattlewereWardDurrett,KenGreen,ThomHannum,RussMiller,andMarkReilly.NealFlum,chairofthePASMarch-ingPercussionCommittee,wastheemceefortheevent.EricHjellming,EventsandPromotionsCoordinatorforSoundSportandDrumlineBattleforDrumCorpsInternational,assistedwiththeeventandsetupthecom-petitionzones.JohnDeNovi,DirectorofBusinessDevelopmentwithDrumCorpsInternationalandfounderoftheDrumlineBattle,alsoassistedwiththeevent. NoticeablyabsentfromthemarchingfestivalandverymuchmissedwasAlMoffat,oftheAvedis

ZildjianCorporation.Moffathadas-sistedwithtiming,penalties,andlogisticsfor23years.Herecentlyunderwentalungtransplantandwasnotabletoattendtheconvention.ThePASMarchingPercussionCom-mitteeaswellasallofthePercussiveArtsSocietywishAlaspeedyandfullrecovery.Moffatisagreatfriendandsupporterofmarchingpercussion,andthePASICMarchingPercussionFestivalwascertainlylessforhisnotbeingthere.

TheNewYorkUniversityPercussionStudiesProgram,underthedirec-

tionofJonathanHaas,recentlyhostedthe8thannualBroadwayPercussionSeminar/Summit,aneventthatbringstogetheranarrayofrenownedBroad-waypercussionistsandparticipantsfromaroundtheworldforafive-dayintensivestudyoftheskills,experi-ence, and know-how necessary to succeedintheworldofBroadwaypercussion. TheSeminarkickedoffSunday,June15withawelcomesession.Ev-eryonegatheredandlistenedasJona-than Haas and Sean Statser took them throughtheweek’sevents. DavidNybergandRayMarchicapresentedthefirstsessionMondaymorning on Mamma Mia.Theout-standingmusiciansprovidedstudentswitharichexperience,astheyofferedinvaluableinsightintotheextensivetechniquesusedforplayingABBA’sfunpoptunes. Onekeypointstressedthrough-outwastheimportanceofkeepingthemusicvibrantandexciting.David’sexpertiseandbrillianceintambourineplayingwasappliedtothecreationofthepercussionparts,whicharestillusedintheshowtoday.Ray’stimewasimpeccable,andtohearhimspeakabouthisapproachtoplaying

eachtunewasinvaluable.Theirexpe-rienceswereinspiringandentertain-ingallatonce. BillHayeshasearnedhisreputa-tionasoneofthehardest-workingmusiciansinNewYorkCity.Inhislonganddistinguishedcareer,hehasperformedwithLizaMinelli,BarbraStreisand,andiscurrentlythepercus-sionistonRodgersandHammerstein’smusicalCinderella.Inhisclass,Hayes

explainedthattherearetwocrucialstepsforsuccessasaBroadwaymusi-cian:“Beagreatsight-readerandbeabletoplaythesamething400timesandstillmakeitexciting.” Hayescalledupseveralpar-ticipantstoperformexcerptsfromCinderella.Astheyplayed,itwasclearthatHayesenjoyedhelpingthestudentsimprovetheirtechniqueandsight-readingskills.Buteven

The show Heart and Lights was settoopenatRadioCityMusicHallinthespringof2014,butwascanceledforreasonsbeyondthecontrolofanymusician.JoshSamuelswontheper-cussionseatforthisshow,andsinceRadioCityonlyuseselectronicpercus-sioninstruments,learnedtheshowontheMalletKATandPanKAT.JoshalsoplayedtheChristmas Spectacular atRadioCityandhasextensiveknowl-edgeoftheMalletKATanditsinnerworkingsandhistory.JoshspokeofhowhewonbothjobsatRadioCity.Attheend,studentswalkedoutwithaninspiredunderstandingofapartofthepercussionworldthatisrapidlygrowinginimportance. Theseconddaybeganwith“Broadway’sSuperSub”KoryGross-man.HehassubbedondozensofBroadwayproductionsovertheyearsfromThe Pirates of Penzance and Por-gy and Bess to Cinderella and Rocky.HediscussedthedemandsofsubbingonseveralshowsatthesametimeandcreatingacareerasaBroadwaysub. “Youhavetolearnyourmusicoutsideofthetheater,”Grossmansaid.Healsodiscussedtheimpor-tanceofsoundingliketheregularpercussionistinthepit.“Youwanttodoeverythingthisguydoes.Listenasmuchaspossible.Yourcreativityisbasedonhowyousoundliketheregularguy,andwhatstepsyoutaketobecomehim.” NextcameJavierDiazandWar-renOdzefromthenewmusicalRocky.Theyfocusedontheirstylistic

approachtoperformingthewrittenmusic.Thepercussionanddrumsetbooksarehigh-energyandheavilyfeaturedinfightscenes.OdzeandDiazrepeatedlystressedthatoneofthemostimportantlessonstheycouldgiveuswastheneedforpercus-sioniststoexploreasmanygenresofmusicaspossible.WhileOdzemayplaydrumsetprofessionallyonBroadwayandDiazmayspecializeinAfro-Cubanmusic,theybothagreedthatitwastheirpassionforallthingspercussion,andallthingsmusic,thatgotthemwheretheyaretoday. ThefinalclassesoftheeveningwerewithWilsonTorresandBenHerman.Torres,whoiscurrentlyapercussionistfortheBroadwayshowLes Miserables,gaveacliniconLatinpercussion.Hetoldtheparticipantsabitabouthimselfandhisstoryasayoungandsuccessfulmusician,andthengavearundownofsomebasicLatingroovesandpatternsnecessaryforpursuingacareerasaBroadwaypercussionist.Bytheendoftheses-sion,everyonewasplayingandcreat-ingwonderfulmusictogether. BenHerman’ssessiontookplaceinNYUSteinhardt’sJamesL.DolanRecordingStudio,andhegavepartici-pantsachancetoexperiencewhatitisliketoworkasastudiomusician.Thestudentsweregivenseveralpiec-esofmusicthattheyhadneverseenbeforeandwereaskedtosight-readthemalongwiththesoundtrack.Oncethiswasaccomplishedtheywould,asHermansaid,“Turnitover,andthenneverseeitagain.” Hermansharedhisownexperi-encesanddiscussedtheprocessofrecordingformoviesoundtracksandcommercials.Hespokeofthejoysof

beingfreefromhoursofrehearsing,butinsteadbeingrequiredtoplayinthemomentandletthemusichap-pen.Thishigh-pressureenvironmentdoesindeedrequireyearsofpractice,andthestudentscertainlygotatasteofthiswhenenteringtherecordingbooth. OnWednesday,everyonehead-eduptownforadayonBroadway.PerhapsthemostuniqueaspectoftheSeminaristheopportunityforparticipantstoviewashowfromthepit,sittingalongsidethepercussion-iststheymetthroughouttheweek.Forthematinee,halfofthestudentswentintothepitsofBeautiful, Cinder-ella, Rocky, Mamma Mia, and Les Mis-erables,whiletheotherhalfwatchedRocky fromtheaudience.Thenfortheeveningshows,everyoneswitched.Evenviewingtheshowfromtheaudi-ence,thestudentshadauniqueper-spectiveonwhattheywerehearingandseeing. AnotherdistinctiveelementoftheBroadwayPercussionSeminaristheopportunitytovisitLocal802.Forthepastfouryears,thegrouphasbeengraciouslyinvitedintotheClubRoombetweenshowsfordinnerandadiscussionwithUnionPresidentToniGagliardiandTomOlcott.ThetwospokeextensivelyaboutLocal802andtheservicestheyprovidethemusi-ciansofNYC.Theydiscussedtopicssuchasdoubling(inwhichamusiciancanmakemoremoneybasedonthenumberofdifferentinstrumentsheorsheplaysforacertainproduction),musicians’rights,royalties,residu-als,andmuchmore.Itwasoneofthemostthought-provokingandin-triguingsessionsoftheSeminar,andeveryonewasextremelyappreciative

ThursdaymorningbeganwithasessionwithJoePassaroandClintdeGanononBroadway’shitmusicalBeautiful.ThetwofocusedonlifeintheBroadwaybusiness,playinginpits,andofferedadviceonhowtomoveintotheworldofBroadwayper-cussion.Theywerebothenthusiastic,reassuringuswithstatementssuchas,“Ifyoureallyhaveapassion,goforit,”and,“Neversaynotoanyopportu-nity.” HavingPassaroanddeGanon

attheBroadwaySeminarwastrulyawonderfullearningexperience,notjustbecausetheysharedtheirexten-sivemusicalknowledge,butalsobe-causetheyofferedvaluablelifeadvicethateverymusicianshouldhearnomatterwhatdirectiontheyarehead-ingintheircareer. Afteranintenseweekofsessionsandshows,allofthepercussionistswhopresentedreconvened,alongwiththeparticipantsandBroadwaycontractorJohnMiller,forafinalroundtablediscussion.Participantssharedtheirthoughtsandexperi-

encesfromtheweekandaskedanyquestionsthatstilllingered.JohnMillerdiscussedcreatingacareeronBroadway,andtheprofessionalsinthe room shared stories, answered questions,andtalkedaboutwhytheychosethiscareerpathandthechoicestheymadealongtheway.Toseethismuchenthusiasm,expertise,experi-ence,knowledge,andcamaraderieintheroomisanunmatchedexperiencethatnobodywillsoonforget.RS

ThePASMarchingPercussionCom-mitteeiscomposedofmusic

educators,performers,arrangers,ad-judicators,andmanufacturerswhosediversebackgroundsandachieve-mentsarerepresentativeofthemanywaysinwhichmarchingpercussion,asanartform,vocation,andfieldofstudy,findsexpression.AmongtheMarchingCommitteemembersareindividualsactivelyinvolvedinWGI,DCI,SwissBaseldrumming,percus-sionmanufacturing,collegemarchingband,highschoolmarchingband,andfifeanddrumcorps.MembersofthecommitteerangeinexperiencefromtwoDCIHallofFamememberstoastudentseekingadoctorateinmusiceducation. Allofthecommitteemembersareactivelyinvolvedinteaching,ar-ranging,and/oradjudicatingmarchingpercussion,promotingandpreserv-ingthehistoryoftheactivity,aswellasservingasstrongproponentsforembracingitseverevolvingnature.Thecommitteefocusesitseffortsthroughouttheyearonfindingwaystoimproveteaching,performing,andevaluatingmarchingpercussion,aswellasenrichingtheknowledgebaseandcraftofarrangingformarchingpercussion. TheMarchingPercussionCom-mitteeengagesoutreachresponsibili-

TheMarchingPercussionCom-mitteeisverymuchaservicecommit-tee.AtPASICmembersarerequiredtojudgetheindividualscompetition,marchingpercussionsmallensemblecompetition,drumlinecompetiton,or“DrumlineBattle,”helpoverseeandmanagethoseevents,andattendtheannualconventionmeeting.Hereareafewofthecommittee’snewandon-goingprojects.

PASIC TRAINING TheMarchingPercussionCom-mittee,workingwiththePASEduca-tionCommittee,isdevelopinganactivitytobeimplementedasapartoffuturePASconventions.PASICTrainingwillofferstudentsanop-portunitytoperformrudimentsformarchingpercussionspecialistswhowillevaluateastudent’sperformanceofselectedrudimentsandworkwiththatstudentonimprovingtheperfor-manceofthoserudiments.OneofthegoalsofPASICTrainingistoencouragestudentstoexplorethehistoryandimportanceofrudimentsandlearntoperformall40PASrudiments. Thecommitteeisconsidering

offeringacertificate,badge,orsometypeofrecognitiontoastudenthav-ingsuccessfullycompletedPASICTraining.

MARCHING COMPOSITION CONTEST Inanefforttorecognizeexcel-lenceinmarchingpercussioncom-positionaswellasdevelopresourcestoassiststudentsandeducatorsinimprovingtheirmarchingpercussioncomposition/arrangingskill-set,theMarchingPercussionCommitteehasdevelopedacontestthroughwhichthewinningcompositionisrecognizedbyPASandpublishedbyacompanythatspecializesinmarchingpercus-sionarrangingasoneofitsofferings.Thegenreofthemarchingcomposi-tioncontestaswellasthepublishingcompanywillrotateonayearlybasis.Thecommitteeisconsideringwaystogeneratemoreparticipationinthecontestandmakeavailableonlinecontentforstudents,educators,andenthusiaststhathelpsthembetterun-derstandthefundamentalsofmarch-ingpercussioncomposition/arranging.

oversightoftheMarchingPercus-sionFestivalateachPASIC.Lastyearthecommitteeaddeda“DrumlineBattle”totheeventsthatcomprisethemarchingfestival.Thisyear,thesmallensemblepercussioncategorywillbemovedundertheoversightofthePercussionEnsembleCommittee.ThesmallensemblecompetitionfortheMarchingPercussionFestivalwillnowhaveasitsfourcategories:snare,multi-tenors,bassdrum,andcymbals.TheMarchingPercussionCommitteewillconsideraddingauxiliaryinstru-mentstothesmallensemblecatego-riesforPASIC2015. TheInteractiveClinicFormatcontinuestobeanopportunityforstudentsanddirectorstoperforminanon-competitiveenvironmentandre-ceivefeedbackfromevaluatorsfromtheworldofconcert/orchestralandmarchingpercussion.2014’sclinicianswereKirkGayandThomHannum.WhenawayfromIndianapolis,thecommitteeseekstokeeptheDrum-lineContestcurrentwiththemanychangestakingplaceintheWGIandDCIactivitiesandcontinuetogrowthe“DrumlineBattle.”

PAS HALL OF FAME TheMarchingPercussionCom-mitteeisinterestedinsupportingindividualsfornominationtothePASHallofFamewhohavecontributedgreatlytothemarchingpercussionac-tivitywhilealsoservingasoutstand-ingmembersofthePercussiveArtsSociety.Thecommitteewilldevelopaprocessforselectingworthycandi-datesfromtheworldofmarchingper-cussionforthePASHallofFame,andthenactivelyandformallysupportthosecandidates.

ARTICLES MarchingPercussionCommitteemembersarerequiredtosubmitonearticleperyearforconsiderationofinclusioninPercussive Notes.Articlesareoneofthewaysinwhichthecom-mitteecandirectlyofferguidancetothosestudentsandeducatorsseekingtoimprovetheirmarchingpercus-sionperformanceskill-set,teachingskill-set,andknowledgebase,aswellasremaincurrentwiththemanyde-velopmentstakingplaceinWGI,DCI,andhighschoolandcollegemarchingband.

CONCLUSION ThePASMarchingPercussionCommitteeisanactiveservicecom-mitteethatrequiresmuchofitsmem-bersandishighlyvisibleattheannualconventionaswellasduringtheyearthrougharticles,socialmedia,manu-facturerwebsitecontent,andper-formanceandteachingactivitiesthatsharethemissionandphilosophyofthePercussiveArtsSociety,withstu-dents,educators,andenthusiasts.WestronglyencourageyoutoparticipateinorattendtheMarchingPercus-sionFestivaltakingplaceonThursdayeveningofPASIC(theIndividualsandSmallEnsemblecompetition)andFridaymorningandafternoon(theIn-teractiveClinicandDrumlineBattle).WealsoencourageyoutoattendtheMarchingPercussionCommitteemeeting.Pleaseseeyourconventionprogramforthemeetinglocation. byBernardWoma.Iwasmesmerized.Myimaginationbe-gantorunwildwithvisionsofmeinWestAfrica,playingmusic,livingwithpeoplefromanotherculture,andtravel-ingtoexoticplaces.Iwasallin. OnMay20 ofthatsamespring,IlandedinAccra,thecapitalofGhana.Aftertheusualairportroutine,ItraveledonehoureasttothesmalltownofMedie.ThiswasthelocationoftheDagaraMusicandArtsCenter,myhomeforthenextmonth.HereIwastostudywithBernard,agyilmasterknownforhisskillasaneducatorandhisdeepunderstandingoftheWestAfricanauralmusictraditioninGhana.ThisisalsowhereIwouldspendcountlesshourswithmyfellowpercussionists,dancers,andtravelersfromtheUnitedStatesandCanadawhohadcometolearnaboutWestAfricanmusicandculture. Atfirst,myexperiencesweretrulyforeign.Theweath-erwashotandhumid.ThefoodwasunlikeanythingIhadeverseenbefore.Iwastheminority.Thisfeelingofstrange-

nessslowlydissipatedovertimeasIbegantoimmersemy-selfinthemusic.Takinggyilanddrumminglessonseverydayclosedthegapbetweenculturesbecausenowwewerespeakingthesamelanguageandwalkingdownthesamepathstogether.IbegantodeveloprelationshipswithRitathecook,LuketheKenteweaver,thedanceinstructors,andthemanyfamiliarfacesthatgravitatedtoDagaraforonereasonoranother.WetookseveraltripsintoMedieandAccratoexplorethemarketsandthehistoricalsites,whichallowedmetobegintounderstandtheGhanaianpeopleandtheirculture.Soon,IwasexperiencingallIhadimaginedthisadventuretobe. TheGeneKrupamodel“RadioKing”snaredrum,manufacturedbytheSlingerlandDrumCompany,wastheirtop-lineprofessionalmodelsnare.Itbeganproductioninthe1940sandwasavailableforseveraldecadesinamultitudeofsizesanddesigns,alwayscapitalizingonthepopularnameofGeneKrupa.Theearlydesignofthedrumfeaturedasolidmapleshellwithreinforcementrings,fullflangeddie-formedmetalhoops,theRadioKingsnarestrainerwitha20-strandsetofsnares,aninternaltonecontrol,andself-aligningrodsandlugs.

Thisspecificdrum,whichfeaturesthepopularwhitemarinepearlcovering,isa7x14sizeandthebadgeshapesuggestsamanufacturingdateofcirca1940.ItfeaturestheRadioKingthree-pointstrainer,hasa16-strandsetofwiresnares,andaninternaltonecontrol.Thisdrumalsohasthe“streamlined”lugdesignandtheprominent“SlingerlandRadioKing”trademarkstampedintothenickel-platedcounterhoop.
