A newsletter from Passages Resource Centre

The E3 Program has been providing positive, educational, worthwhile opportunities for at risk youth since April 2009. E3 is an innovative and comprehensive education and training program specifically designed for young people between the ages of 12 and 25 that access Passages Resource Centre.

Through working with street present youth, Passages staff identified the need to develop this highly motivational program that would engage, equip and provide space for young people to encounter others, their environment and themselves. The E3 Program (Engage, Equip, Encounter) is an opportunity for participants to develop and grow as individuals and acquire new skills through the attainment of accredited training courses through Conservation Volunteers Australia (CVA).

The most recent E3 Program ‘project’ was a 10 week project that took place in Adelaide, South Australia which began in September 2010. Three young people that had accessed Passages previously attended which saw them performing a number of tasks including tree planting, trail construction, fencing, seed collection, native plant propagation, flora and fauna management and bird and animal surveys.

Upon completing this project, participants were accredited with a Certificate I in Active Volunteering and a Certificate II in Conservation and Land Management. The project also equips youth with a multitude of skills including communication, problem solving, confidence, project management, planning and organising, worksite organising and team leadership which improves their employability and gives them the confidence in their ability to separate themselves from the life they formerly lived and move into a more interdependent and healthy future.

The 2010 Passages Race Day has continued to build on the success over the past four years as again another sellout event was held at Belmont Park Race Course on Saturday May 22. The weather may not have been kind but it did not stop over 240 supporters and guests dressing up for a day at the races to raise money for Passages.

With the function room looking resplendent in the black and white theme, everyone enjoyed a tremendous day of fun, food and auctioneering. This year we had an enormous range of auction items, again eclipsing the previous year as our biggest yet. There was plenty of interest in the auctions and raffles, and all but a handful of items were left by day’s end.

It was somewhat appropriate that on the 10th anniversary of Passages, the opportunity was taken to show the new Passages promotional DVD, a moving and poignant short video highlighting the services Passages offers and the benefits to our clients.

There were winners and losers around the totes, however Passages was the clear winner by the end of day as the final result was significantly better than anticipated with $54,000 raised.

Passages would like to thank all those who attended and supported the Race Day, in particular the Race Day Sponsors. In addition we would like to acknowledge the support and help of our corporate supporters Linc Integrated and Perth Racing. Also a special thanks to our MC, Nick Way, who looked very sharp in his white suit.

We would not have achieved the success we did without the generosity of our sponsors and their guests, our corporate supporters and all the individuals and companies of which there are too many to name individually, that donated items for our auction and raffle. We can’t thank you enough.

We can now announce that next year’s Passages Race Day will be held on the 21st May 2011. If the last four years are anything to judge by, 2011 will again be a sell out so mark your diaries, or better yet reserve your table now. See you there!

E3 Takes Off to Adelaide

On the night of the Vinnies CEO Sleepout a Passages Resource Centre client, Nicole, shared her story of homelessness. For Nicole, like many of the young people the Passages Resource Centre assists, life has not been easy. Nicole came from a single parent family where a history of mental health illness existed. From the very early age of nine years old Nicole was responsible for much of the day to day care of her younger siblings; at 14 she became homeless and started self harming and then spent the next 16 years living on and off the streets, living in squats, bushes and couch surfing. Nicole has since struggled to gain employment, often securing jobs, but then losing them due to circumstances out of her control and her homelessness.

Through the support of Passages, Nicole has secured permanent accommodation, is no longer self harming, is studying and is now ready for work. The opportunity to share her story with the business and community leaders at the Vinnies CEO Sleepout has also provided her with opportunities to continue in the right direction provided by the team at Passages.

Nicole wrote the following after speaking at the Vinnies CEO Sleepout:

“Since the Sleepout I have had the opportunity to be blessed by some of the CEOs and have met some amazing people. These miracles that would appear to others as being small have made a large impact on me. For example, the Manager of The Body Shop blessed me with a facial and some products to take care of myself and I also got some work experience at Minter Ellison. I have also made some amazing friends through this experience and am grateful for having it. I am happier and am moving forward again. Thank you all for your support and kindness.”

Nicole’s story touched many in the room and her story helped participants better understand some of the reasons young people become homeless, how their lives spiral out of control and of the importance of services such as the Passages Resource Centre in getting their lives back on track.

Passages Resource Centre continues to respond to the demand from street present

youth for vital services that provide hope, comfort and dignity. The 2009/10 end of

financial year statistics are as follows:

The St Vincent de Paul Society held its first national Vinnies CEO Sleepout in Perth on June 17, 2010 participated by 99 of Perth’s top business and community leaders sleeping rough for one night to raise awareness about the serious issue of homelessness.

Passages Resource Centre is located at Bendat House: 22 Palmerston Street, Northbridge and is ideally situated to engage with and provide services for Perth’s most disadvantaged young people – some as young as 12 years old.

Since Passages opened over 10 years ago, clients have accessed 82,948 of its services. Some of the services offered include:

As part of National Homelessness Persons’ week in early August, the Youth Affairs Council of WA (YACWA) launched their third annual ‘Home is where the Heart is’ campaign. Young people, who make up a third of Australians who are homeless, were given the opportunity to tell their stories in an exhibition through photography.

In each case a homeless person was mentored by a young or emerging photographer and explored the theme of ‘home’ and what home means to them. The images were gathered in a single photo shoot and in many instances the young people have no prior experience using photographic equipment. Each installation of images is accompanied by a story that provides some context to the image.

The profits from the sale of the prints are donated back to services that provide support to the young people of which Passages is one. Three of Passages clients participated in this program and also participated in various media opportunities.

It is our lesser known supporters who also deserve a mention and we acknowledge groups such as Scott Print and the proprietors Dudley and Mike Scott who have printed our newsletters as an in-kind donation since their inception. This support allows us to spread the word about the many programs and good stories coming out of the service to the broader community.

Torre Butchers have supplied meat free of charge for our weekly Friday barbeques since Passages commenced operations, which has been a very welcome addition to the weekly social get-togethers. Bernie Ardagh has provided architectural and maintenance advice on our property in Palmerston Street since it was renovated seven years ago, Ted Van Hemmst at Vanguard Press provides parking for our vehicle in Northbridge, and last but not least a special mention to Ashley Ladner from the Rotary Club of Perth for the work he puts in to planning the annual Passages Race Day held in May at Belmont Park Race Course. As you will read in the newsletter, this year’s event raised $54,000 which

was a fantastic result for Passages. Next year’s event will be held on Saturday May 21 so mark it in your diaries now.

In closing I would like to wish you and your families a very safe, happy and joyous Christmas and thank you all for your ongoing support of the Passages Resource Centre. The youth of Perth who visit Passages receive a chance to “create new destinies” (as our new logo states) which can lead them to live a full and happy life.

The website will contain information about the service as well as information about our joint-venture partners the St Vincent de Paul Society and the Rotary Club of Perth. The website is still under construction however for a sneak peak visit www.passagesresourcecentre.com as it currently features a very moving video about Passages and some of its clients. On Sunday October 10, the second Adventure on Wheels Family Fun Day was held to help raise funds to assist street present young people through educational services and training run by Passages Resource Centre. The day involved participants paying $30 per car, departing from one location on a guided route to a secret destination and answering questions and participating in games along the way.

Adventure on Wheels is organised by Shelley Hubon as part of HD Streetwise and Passages extends a big thank you to Shelley for her ongoing support through fundraising activities and financial and in-kind donations.

He has been a Professional Director of both private and public companies for over 30-years and has served on Not-For-Profit Boards for the Rotary Club of Perth and Passages Resource Centre for street present youth; the Prostate Cancer Foundation Australia (WA) and is also a Councillor for HBF.

Over the last 10 years he has been involved with commercial property development, consisting mainly of prime retail properties in the CBD and Claremont.

Jeff Leach has been a member of the Rotary Club of Perth since 1985 and was President in 2008/2009, when the Club received a Presidential Citation from Rotary International.

Passages is the major project for the Rotary Club of Perth and an essential service to the street present youth of Perth, due to the lack of support from local, state and Commonwealth government.

For street present youth to have hope, they need the excellent support provided by the St Vincent de Paul Society at Passages, funded by the Rotary Club of Perth and our generous donors.

Jeff, his wife Helen and four children are all passionate about the services Passages provides and supports this very worthy cause.

Since 2000 the Town of Vincent has been funding the Healthy Cooking Program at Passages through their Community and Welfare Grants Program. The grant has been used to run a “Healthy Cooking Group” consisting of a weekly skills-based activity covering independent living skills such as budgeting, shopping, menu planning, cooking and hygiene.

Recently the grant has also been utilised to run Friday BBQs. Passages clients use the skills they have acquired in the Healthy Cooking Group to make salads to accompany the BBQ (with the meat being generously donated by Torre Butchers). The Friday BBQs are a good opportunity for other service providers to refer clients and also for staff to build rapport with those present. This is in addition to the cooking and meal preparation skills the participants learn from the program.

Participation numbers are high with the BBQ being accessed 291 times during 2009/10 and the Healthy Cooking Group being accessed 119 times. This is a total of 410 times these programs were accessed during the 2010 financial year. Thank you to the Town of Vincent for the ongoing support through this grant program.

Passages has had another successful year in terms of the young people it has helped and the various services it has provided. Some of these activities are featured in this newsletter as well as other articles regarding the Passages Race Day, Allens Arthur Robinson and Adventure on Wheels which give some insight into the support Passages receives from fundraising events, and dedicated and passionate companies and individuals.

Jeff Leach’s professional career commenced as a Pharmaceutical Chemist extending to Founding Chairman of the Friendlies Chemists Franchise Group.

This year we had an enormous range of auction items, again eclipsing the previous year as our biggest yet. There was plenty of interest in the auctions and raffles, and all but a handful of items were left by day’s end.

It was somewhat appropriate that on the 10th anniversary of Passages, the opportunity was taken to show the new Passages promotional DVD, a moving and poignant short video highlighting the services Passages offers and the benefits to our clients.

There were winners and losers around the totes, however Passages was the clear winner by the end of day as the final result was significantly better than anticipated with $54,000 raised.

Passages would like to thank all those who attended and supported the Race Day, in particular the Race Day Sponsors. In addition we would like to acknowledge the support and help of our corporate supporters Linc Integrated and Perth Racing. Also a special thanks to our MC, Nick Way, who looked very sharp in his white suit.

We would not have achieved the success we did without the generosity of our sponsors and their guests, our corporate supporters and all the individuals and companies of which there are too many to name individually, that donated items for our auction and raffle. We can’t thank you enough.

We can now announce that next year’s Passages Race Day will be held on the 21st May 2011. If the last four years are anything to judge by, 2011 will again be a sell out so mark your diaries, or better yet reserve your table now. See you there!

E3 Takes Off to Adelaide

On the night of the Vinnies CEO Sleepout a Passages Resource Centre client, Nicole, shared her story of homelessness. For Nicole, like many of the young people the Passages Resource Centre assists, life has not been easy. Nicole came from a single parent family where a history of mental health illness existed. From the very early age of nine years old Nicole was responsible for much of the day to day care of her younger siblings; at 14 she became homeless and started self harming and then spent the next 16 years living on and off the streets, living in squats, bushes and couch surfing. Nicole has since struggled to gain employment, often securing jobs, but then losing them due to circumstances out of her control and her homelessness.

Through the support of Passages, Nicole has secured permanent accommodation, is no longer self harming, is studying and is now ready for work. The opportunity to share her story with the business and community leaders at the Vinnies CEO Sleepout has also provided her with opportunities to continue in the right direction provided by the team at Passages.

Nicole wrote the following after speaking at the Vinnies CEO Sleepout:

“Since the Sleepout I have had the opportunity to be blessed by some of the CEOs and have met some amazing people. These miracles that would appear to others as being small have made a large impact on me. For example, the Manager of The Body Shop blessed me with a facial and some products to take care of myself and I also got some work experience at Minter Ellison. I have also made some amazing friends through this experience and am grateful for having it. I am happier and am moving forward again. Thank you all for your support and kindness.”

Nicole’s story touched many in the room and her story helped participants better understand some of the reasons young people become homeless, how their lives spiral out of control and of the importance of services such as the Passages Resource Centre in getting their lives back on track.

financial year statistics are as follows:

The St Vincent de Paul Society held its first national Vinnies CEO Sleepout in Perth on June 17, 2010 participated by 99 of Perth’s top business and community leaders sleeping rough for one night to raise awareness about the serious issue of homelessness.

Passages Resource Centre is located at Bendat House: 22 Palmerston Street, Northbridge and is ideally situated to engage with and provide services for Perth’s most disadvantaged young people – some as young as 12 years old.

Since Passages opened over 10 years ago, clients have accessed 82,948 of its services. Some of the services offered include:

A newsletter from Passages Resource Centre

The E3 Program has been providing positive, educational, worthwhile opportunities for at risk youth since April 2009. E3 is an innovative and comprehensive education and training program specifically designed for young people between the ages of 12 and 25 that access Passages Resource Centre.

Through working with street present youth, Passages staff identified the need to develop this highly motivational program that would engage, equip and provide space for young people to encounter others, their environment and themselves. The E3 Program (Engage, Equip, Encounter) is an opportunity for participants to develop and grow as individuals and acquire new skills through the attainment of accredited training courses through Conservation Volunteers Australia (CVA).

The most recent E3 Program ‘project’ was a 10 week project that took place in Adelaide, South Australia which began in September 2010. Three young people that had accessed Passages previously attended which saw them performing a number of tasks including tree planting, trail construction, fencing, seed collection, native plant propagation, flora and fauna management and bird and animal surveys.

Upon completing this project, participants were accredited with a Certificate I in Active Volunteering and a Certificate II in Conservation and Land Management. The project also equips youth with a multitude of skills including communication, problem solving, confidence, project management, planning and organising, worksite organising and team leadership which improves their employability and gives them the confidence in their ability to separate themselves from the life they formerly lived and move into a more interdependent and healthy future.

The 2010 Passages Race Day has continued to build on the success over the past four years as again another sellout event was held at Belmont Park Race Course on Saturday May 22. The weather may not have been kind but it did not stop over 240 supporters and guests dressing up for a day at the races to raise money for Passages.
