You are reading our traditional marketing report “Passenger Car Market in Russia, Results of 2012, Trends and Prospects”, prepared by AUTOSTAT analysts in January 2013.
The report contains detailed information on the passenger car sales, their dynamics and structure, market capacity, its price segmentation and some other characteristics. Results of passenger car sales in Europe, dynamics and structure of passenger car import to Russia as well as information on the car lending market are included as separate pages. Moreover, we devoted special attention to trends and prospects of passenger car market in the forecast of the automotive market development till 2017 inclusive. Each market player’s sales results for 12 months of 2012 are represented in the report visually.
Almost 2.76 million passenger cars were sold in our country last year, that is the new record in the Russian car market. At the same time we should also mention that the market growth decreased 3.5 times during the year to 11.2%. The main factors of this decrease are termination of utilization and preferential car lending programs, which were active in 2011, as well as global instability in the world economy. Domestic LADA is still the market leader, 536,600 cars of this brand were sold during the year (-7.2%). At the
same time AVTOVAZ market share decreased to 19.5%. The second place belongs to Chevrolet, which also became the best selling foreign brand in Russia with 205,000 cars sold (+18.2%) and 7.4% market share.
994,300 passenger cars were imported to Russia in 2012, that is 5.6% more than a year ago. As before, the largest share (over 98%) of import belongs to new cars.
Last year the average price of a passenger car in Russia grew by 6.5% up to $27,330, which is another record. As a result, the total proceeds exceeded $75 billion during the year.
The marketing report was prepared with an office research method. The major information sources are AEB, GTK, GIBDD data as well as our own databases and information obtained from the market players directly. All data presented in the report is clearly organized and compiled in tables. Every subject is illustrated with graphs and diagrams. On-line evaluation of the situation by some major parameters is included in our monthly reviews of the Russian market.

Structure of the russian market in 2012 In 2012 almost X.XX million new passenger cars were sold in Russia, that is XX.X% more than in 2011.
Despite a little more that X% sales decrease domestic LADA is still the leader in the Russian market with XXX,XXX cars. At the same time AVTOVAZ market share decreased to XX,X%. The second place and the leadership in the foreign car market in Russia belongs to American Chevrolet, which sold XXX,XXX cars (+XX.X%) and took X.X% of the market. The third place was taken by Renault with XXX,XXX cars (+XX.X%) and X.X% market share...

According to AUTOSTAT evaluation in 2012 the average price of a passenger car sold in the Russian market came up to $XX,XXX. That is X.X% or $X,XXX more than in 2011. As during the year new passenger car sales in Russia grew by XX.X% up to X.XX million cars, the total proceeds of carmakers came up to $XX.X billion. Thus, in 2012 the market grew by XX.X% or $XX.X billion in terms of money.
AvtoVAZ is still the market leader among car manufacturers. Last year the Togliatti car plant sold XXX,XXX passenger cars, that is X.X% less than a year ago. During the year the average price of LADA cars, sold in Russia came up to $XX,XXX. So, last year the company’s proceeds decreased by X.X% (-$XXX,XXX million) to $X.X billion, which is X.X% of the total carmakers’ proceeds. We should mention that this share was X.X% in 2011...

priCE SEgmENTaTiON Of ThE markETIn 2012 more expensive passenger car
segments continued to increase their shares. The main reason for that was the growth of the average car price due to the changes occurred in the Russian market structure, particularly decrease in AvtoVAZ market share and the rise in prices for the most affordable foreign models. The share of the cheapest cars in the market – from $X,XXX to $XX,XXX decreased by X% to X.X% (XXX,XXX cars). We should mention that in 2009 such cars generated over a quarter of the market. The further decrease in this segment is expected in the future due to inflation and possible growth in consumer welfare...

Central Federal District is still the leader in regional structure, its share is about XX% of the total market or XXX,XXX cars. We should also mention that every third foreign car is still sold in Moscow and Moscow region (XXX,XXX cars).
The second place in the regional rating belongs to Volga Federal District, where a little more than XXX,XXX cars were sold, i.e. about a fifth of the total Russian market. North-Western Federal District is traditionally on the third place with about XX% market share or XXX,XXX foreign cars. Over XX% of them (XXX,XXX cars) were sold in St. Petersburg and Leningrad region.

X.XX million new passenger cars were sold on credit in our country in 2012. Despite the fact that the Russian car market exceeded pre-crisis level (X.XX million cars), the volume of credit sales is still under this level. We should remind that X.XX million cars (the total market was X.XX million cars) were sold on credit in 2008.
At the end of 2011 the dynamics of credit sales was positive, having reached XX% in December, on average XX.X% during the year. However at the beginning of 2012 this trend discontinued due to termination of preferential car lending program. On the other hand there was no other serious prerequisites for the drop in credit sales, except that some banks increased their interest rates in Autumn. Thus, on average XX% of cars were sold on credit during the year...
