What raIl operators need, What passengers Want

Today’s mainline and urban rail networks are beginning to supplant airline routes and individual cars. The renewed ascent of rail should continue well into the century if rail operators can meet new regulatory requirements and high passenger expectations for quality service. ICT developments play a key role. Advanced ICT systems allow you to welcome passengers, including the mobility impaired, and to attract a broader customer base by satisfying passenger appetites for high-tech amenities. These include general or interactive travel and safety information in real-time, throughout their trips, continuous WiFi connections for email and internet aboard trains, and even train intranet with audio and video channels with personalized content.

smart Investments

Good for attracting business, new generation Passenger Infotainment system solutions also make good business sense: they bring you new means of improving internal business operations in terms of punctuality, maintenance efficiency, rolling stock availability and staff communications. Investing in obsolescence-proof backbone technology

with modular subsystems is a cost-effective decision for a long service life.Such modularity facilitates integration, configuration and later upgrades. An ICT system can integrate all Security & Communications subsystems and Passenger Information & Entertainment modules in a common architecture. Operators can use existing IT and telecom infrastructure and services already deployed. Choosing an advertising-based solution can help offset initial investment and operating costs.

these real-time solutions can also have applications useful to your train

and station staff. alstom offers a full range of products and systems

for integration at specific points within your rail network (train,

station, control center). they can be installed as either a full system

covering all areas, or as Passenger Information and entertainment

alone or with other functions.

Our Passenger Information System’s architecture covers three distinct environments: trains, fixed installations (stations, depots, track & tunnels) and the control center.

This system architecture is shared and integrated with three other functions for control and operations: • Security• Control & Monitoring (train traffic, energy supply) • Network & Telecom infrastructure

The system is modular and upgradeable, offering customers multiple options: an operator may choose to equip a single environment and later equip others, or deploy one of the four functions and interface it with other functional areas already at work, knowing that a migration path exists for a later, fully integrated system solution. The system is scalable and configurable to an expanding rail network. The equipment in an Alstom Security system is either designed and manufactured in-house or sourced from reliable suppliers. All equipment conforms fully to rail transport environment standards.

alstom InformatIon and entertaInment systems In the World

santIago metro lIne 1, chIlepassenger InformatIon communIcatIon system

The Santiago transit authority had several specific goals in adding a Passenger Information Communication System to metro line 1’s fleet of 17 trains and 24 stations: firstly, to in-terface with the SCADA system for information concerning train times and arrivals and provide automatic station-stop announcements. It also had to provide the means for train drivers to be able to send emergency messages from their cabs to passenger dis-plays. Alstom was chosen to supply and install this integrated station and train Passenger Information System, which can also be used for infotainment.

To provide its subway riders with real-time messaging and live TV and radio broadcasts, MARTA, the transit authority for Atlanta, Georgia (USA), decided to go with a self-financing Passenger Information solution. This onboard advertising system is the first in North America to use TV-based technology to broadcast audio and visual content to passengers, who use individual, vandalism-proof LCD screens to choose between videos or audio-only music and news channels. MARTA selected Alstom technology for the new broadcast system, and to replace the trains’ former communication system.

On their new-generation fleet of Pendolino high speed tilting trains, national operator Trenitalia wanted to offer passengers travel amenities on a par with in-flight services. Along with the new interior design, seating and bar car, they opted for an advanced Passenger Information and Entertainment System. This upgradeable system features digital public address system, programmable seat-reservation displays and multi-media entertainment including movies and at-seat audio channels as well as a WiFi intranet. Alstom provided this system, judged by Trenitalia as the best value in technology.

SNCF customers, accustomed to its high-speed service, expect cutting-edge technology. Today, this means trains with the latest onboard IT amenities: SNCF has introduced an on-board web service providing a constant, unbroken connection even at 320 km/h. TGV East passengers can consult their email or visit a three-language site offering news, reser-vations, access to the web and more. As part of the consortium that provided the system, Alstom supplied and installed the train-borne WiFi network and servers, roof-mounted antennas and WiFi access points in each car. The WiFi equipment meets European standards and can work throughout the EU. The system can be upgraded to a train-borne Ethernet network (now standard in all new Alstom trains). Deployment on the TGV East fleet will begin by early 2009.

All of our rolling stock is designed with a train-borne Ethernet network, which provides a means of data transmission for Passenger Information and Entertainment on trains as well as security throughout the entire network. Our experts can also install onboard security equipment and train-ground communications systems on existing fleets, whether supplied by Alstom or another manufacturer. Among the equipment that can be integrated into one of our solutions are public address systems, passenger information screens, at-seat audio & video, seat reservations, internet connections, operator intranet and entertainment programming.

We also offer a range of public address equipment, passenger information displays, entertainment and advertising displays, information kiosks and clocks.

communIcatIons/data transmIssIon

A train-borne Ethernet network integrates both our Passenger Infotainment and our Security solutions: visual displays, audio, sensors, data processing and transmission equipment, communicating to the ground-based backbone network by radio transmission or directly to the control center by satellite connection.

Alstom pioneered rail signaling over 20 years ago, designing systems to prevent train collisions. Today, we offer ICT solutions for real-time information to complement our and other manufacturers’ traffic control management systems. To enhance the travel experience with onboard entertainment and WiFi connections, we have also developed a highly efficient full system solution, with our own and 3rd party products. Designed for modularity, our ICT technology can be tailored to meet your specific needs, either as an integrated system or as separate modules, in any rail context: trains, stations, tunnels, trackside, depots and control centers. Our Information Communications & Entertainment range uses the same ICT hardware and software platforms as our Security range, facilitating later upgrades.
