Asmoreandmorebuildingsareincorpora+ngon-siterenewableenergysystems,it’sbecomingincreasinglyimportanttounderstandhowthosesoon-to-be-ubiquitoussystemsaffectthecurrentgridstructure,andtodevelopstrategiesforintegra+ngthenewwiththeold.AtNuthatchHollow,aresearchsta+onforBinghamtonUniversitywhichispursuingLivingBuildingChallenge(LBC)andPassiveHouseCer+fica+on,theprojectteamistacklingthisissuefromtwodirec+ons.Star+ngwiththe“Passive”approach,thebuildingisdesignedtomeettheaggressivehea+ng,cooling,andenergylimita+onsofPHIUS+2015.Theeffectsoftheselimita+onsarethatasmallerPVsystemisneeded,sothereislessvariabilitybetweensupply,orgenera+on,anddemand;also,the+ghtenvelopemeansthebuildingcanthermallycoastthroughpoweroutages,therebyrequiringlessemergencybackupenergy.Thesestrategiesarethefounda+onofaresilientdesign.Onthe“Ac+ve”side,theprojectincorporatesaPVarrayontheroof,whichwillbesizedtosupply105%oftheproject’snetannualenergyneeds,aLivingBuildingChallengerequirement,alongwithaba.erystoragesystem,allofwhichisdesignedtobeaself-sufficientsystem,althoughisgrid-+edforflexibility.Ba.eryselec+onisimportanttothefunc+onofthesystemandislimitedbythestrictRed-ListchemicalcompliancerequiredbyLBC.Twoothercri+calconsidera+onsarethesizeoftheba.eryitself:toosmallandthesystemfails,toolargeanditisn’tcosteffec+ve,andthecontrolsystemfortheba.erytoop+mizedischargetopowerthebuilding.Calcula+onsforsizingtheba.eryderivefromthesizeofthePVsystemalongwiththelocaldemand.Thecontrolop+miza+onisdictatedbythedevelopmentofanalgorithmtotakeprojectspecificopera+onintoaccount.Variabilityin+mingandquan+tyofpeakenergysupplytogridsystemsandpeakdemandfromthemcanwreakhavoconu+litygrids,aphenomenonreferredtoasthe“DuckCurve”bytheCaliforniaIndependentSystemOperator.Becauseofthis,someu+li+esofferminimal,ifany,incen+vesforpropertyownerstosellbackexcessenergy,makingba.erystorageamorea.rac+veop+on,whichhelpstoactuallysmoothoutthegenera+on/demandvariabilityattheindividualproperty.Thissmoothingreducestheu+lityfeesrelatedtopeakdemand,whichwillcontributetoashortenedpaybackperiod.Also,ba.eriescanmakePVeffec+veasanemergencypowersourceduringgridoutages,whereotherwisetheinstabilityofenergygeneratedbyPVmakesitunusableinmee+ngtherequiredloadseffec+velyasadirectconnec+on.Bydesigningtheenvelopeandbuildingsystemstouseveryli.leenergyfromthebeginning,andthenapplyingasmallon-sitePVsystem,grid-+edandconnectedtoappropriatelysizedba.erystorage,theprojectachievesincreasedresilienceanddecreasedstrainontheexis+nggridinacosteffec+veway,makingthisareplicablestrategyforfutureprojectslookingtogettozero,orposi+ve,withoutnega+veimpactstoexis+nginfrastructure.
