Read the conversation below and answer the following question:

Did Gerard cut his own hair? Gerard What do you think Maria? I’ve cut my hair.

Maria Wow, it looks really good! It must have been really difficult cutting it yourself!

Gerard No, no, I didn’t cut it myself – someone at the hairdressers did it for me.

Maria Oh, OK, you mean you’ve had your hair cut.

Gerard I’ve had my hair cut.

Maria That’s right. I was a bit surprised you’d done it yourself!

Complete the rules in the box.

I’ve had my hair cut The structure is used when we arrange for other people to do things for us.

It has a passive meaning.

Have can be in any tense.

The other verb (_______, in the above example) is the past participle.

have + object + past participle

Example: I had my eye examined at the hospital.

The same structure can be used to talk about experiences which we do not arrange, but which happen to us, particularly accidents or crimes.

Example: I had my face kicked while I was playing football. Pete’s had his new motorbike stolen.
