Academic Year, New Student Contributions by Admit Type and Semester

The proportion of new beginners starting in the spring was slightly lower than last year. It extends the declining trend of the proportion of beginners who started in spring. Meanwhile, the proportion of new transfers who start in the spring semester has remained the same as last year.

Undergraduate enrollment at the IUPUI Indianapolis campus stays consistent when comparing fall and spring enrollments’ proportion to the last year’s fall-spring composition. Ivy Tech’s Indianapolis Service Area enrollment continued to show an inconsistent trend in terms of the fall and spring enrollment proportion.

There was a slight increase in the total number of credits articulated from Ivy Tech in Fall 2019 compared to last year. This increase is reflected in the increase of the average number in transfer credits articulated. In Fall 2019, Ivy Tech transfers brought in 41.4 credits on average, the highest in the past three academic years, while transfers from other schools brought in 30.7 credits on average.

The percentage of Ivy Tech transfers taking between 12 and 14 hours increased slightly. However, there was a slight decrease in the percentage of Ivy Tech transfer students taking 15 hours or more. The percentage of transfer students who are students of color from Ivy Tech was less than the previous year. A rather significant decrease in Latinx population is a big reason for this decline. However, the percentage of Ivy Tech transfers who were African American increased slightly. This trend is also not consistent with transfers from other schools and new beginners as they have a higher percentage students of color compared to last year. The gender composition and students’ age distribution composition relatively remain the same across the board.

The average GPAs of Ivy Tech junior and senior transfers were lower than the averages of all other IUPUI juniors and seniors. Also, their retention rates were lower than the retention rates of all other IUPUI juniors and seniors, but higher than the retention rates of all external transfers.

Number of Courses Articulated in TES (Transfer Evaluation System) by Major Feeder Institutions

The Passport Office, in conjunction with the Office of Undergraduate Admissions, has been the leader across all IU campuses statewide in utilizing the Transfer Evaluation System (TES). TES is used for transfer equivalency recording and contains a student-facing portion of the program known as Transferology. TES and Transferology are used by hundreds of colleges nationwide and is quickly becoming the leader in assisting students with quickly finding their equivalencies. The number of Ivy Tech course articulations in TES has declined from last year (11,462 for Ivy Tech in the last year’s report). At the end of the 2018 calendar year, the Operations Team in the Enrollment Management at IUPUI did a ‘clean-up’ of TES rules and deleted any rule that had not been vetted by a faculty member at IUPUI.

Ivy Tech has changed from a region-based model to service areas (shown below). Service areas may contain one or more “campuses” (indicated by the circles) and several “sites” (indicated by the squares). There has also been a change within IU’s recording of Ivy Tech transfer credits. IU no longer counts credits based on the Ivy Tech region (or service area), but now looks at the credits as coming from one college.

When excluding dual-credit high school students from consideration, both Ivy Tech’s Indianapolis service area and the college as a whole have been experiencing declines in enrollment for several years. However, in the past two academic years, the rate of decline seemed to be slower than the previous years’ trend.

Similar to last year, the proportion of Ivy Tech’s students of color in the Indianapolis service area was twice as much as the proportion of this group of students in all other Ivy Tech service areas. The number of deferred students slightly dropped compared to last year. However, the proportion of the students of color increased by a little over 2%. The proportion of female students also increased by more than 4%, resulting in more female students who deferred than male students.
