Usage:

This tense is used:• To describe an action completed

before point in the past ; as, ex..I. At 2 o’clock he had

sold all his eatables.II. Suman had got

married at 15.

• To describe a complete action in the past before another action in the past began; as,

I. The bell had rung when he entered the school.

II. The patient had died before the doctor arrived.

• To denote past desires which remained unfulfilled : as,

I. If only I had studied hard. (but I had

not studied.) II. I wish I had met her in my

youth. (but I did not/could not meet.)

. In the condition clauses to describe something which did not really happened ;as,

I. If he had met us , we would have helped him.

II. If you had studied seriously you would have passed.
