Pastor Greg

Paul and Betty Kirkland were longtime members of St. Matthews Baptist Church. Paul worked for Southern Seminary and spent many Sundays preaching in churches. Betty was ac-tive in WMU and Sunday School. Both served and supported ministries of their church.

When Betty died, she established a testamentary trust. It was designed to provide a stream of income to her three children for their lifetime and, upon their passing, the remainder would be given to SMBC. Last year, their son Gil died and we were informed of this testamentary trust provision.

Finance Committee consulted with the family whose desire was that a portion of the funds be used to improve sound, video, and technological needs of our church. Paul and Betty’s grandson Steve Kirkland serves as Technical Director of SMBC. Thanks to the gen-erosity of Paul and Betty Kirkland, you’ll soon see monitors in hallways providing information about ministries. We will also install monitors to help our choir, churchestra, and band better see video and graphics. Already, im-provements have been made to the stage area in the Fellowship Hall.

The remainder of the Kirkland estate gift will be used to start a Legacy Giv-ing fund. Finance Committee is work-ing with the Kentucky Baptist Founda-tion on the details.

What an honor it is to be part of such a generous family of faith. The Kirk-lands were faithful to support their church during their lifetime, and even in death wanted to make a difference.

If you would be interested in talking to someone about making a decision like the one Paul and Betty Kirkland did, I encourage you to call Barry Allen or Laurie Valentine at the Kentucky Bap-tist Foundation. Their number is 489-3533.

I look forward to seeing you Sunday as we celebrate the resurrection of our Lord and the hope it brings us today!

Blessings,

Greg

SMBC Helps Set Record God has blessed Operation Christmas Child with its best season ever as over 8.6 million shoe boxes were collected last November and December. That means more children than ever before received gift-filled shoe boxes and the Good News of God’s love. SMBC and Samaritan’s Purse are thankful to each and every person who packed boxes, prayed for Operation Christmas Child, and gave financially. It is true that every shoe box represents a Gospel opportunity, and each individual who participates in the project is making that opportunity pos-sible.

Resurrection Rally! Children and preteens will not want to miss our 2nd annual Resurrection Rally, 10:00 a.m. Easter Sunday morning, in the chapel! Kids will be amazed by The Bag Escape which will set the stage for talking about the wonder of the resurrection! We will sing and celebrate Easter together! Everyone present will receive a special gift!

Superstars Competition The annual Fellowship of Christian Athletes (FCA) Superstars Compe-tition for boys and girls ages 8-11 will be held on Friday, May 4 from 9 a.m. to noon at Fern Creek High School. There will be two age groups for boys and two for girls. All participants will receive a t-shirt and a ticket to a 2012 Louis-ville Bats game. Information is available through SS as well as on our website.

St. Matthews Street Festival! SMBC has arranged to be a major sponsor for the inaugural St. Matthews Street Festival which will be held on Saturday, May 19, 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. The city will block off Frankfort Avenue from the junction of Frank-fort and Shelbyville roads down to Bauer Avenue for the festival which is expected to draw thousands of participants. SMBC will sponsor the Kids Zone. Watch for more information on how you can help make it happen, as well as on why we have chosen to partner.

Did you know we have a Chrismon

tree? In our foyer every Christmas, the

large tree by the stairway is decorated

with Chrismon ornaments made by the

Friendship and Helping Hands Sunday

School classes many years ago. Chris-

mons are a type of Christmas tree deco-

ration used in many churches and often

in the homes of Christians. Chrismons

(CHRISt MONogram) are tree orna-

ments that proclaim our Lord Jesus

Christ through the use of symbols. The

symbols used represent a variety of bib-

lical and theological concepts that are

well known among most believers.

Most Chrismons are white with gold

decorations of pearls, sequins, beads,

ribbon and glitter. Our Chrismon orna-

ments need to be replaced. Some mem-

bers of the LIGHT Sunday School class

are interested in reviving this tradition,

but need some additional help. If you

would be interested in making new

Chrismon ornaments, please call the

church office.
