Weekly Reflection

The Second Vatican Council described the Church as a ‘pilgrim people’. We are a people who journey together toward the fullness of God’s kingdom of love. Christianity is not a solo venture. No one can truly be holy without the help of others.

In our society we see a growing trend away from the Church. Not necessarily away from spirituality or faith, but away from institutionalized religion. As a missionary in Alaska, I recurrently encountered this sentiment among those who I invited to be a part of our faith community. Of course, if you are reading this then on some level you believe that community is important to growth in holiness. And yet, many people, even sitting in the pews every Sunday, still deem faith a private affair.

Pope Francis, in his new Apostolic Exhortation Gaudete et Exsultate (GE), writes that it is much more difficult to fight off the devil alone. Our help comes from God through others. Desert Father, Dorotheos of Gaza, offers a helpful image to illustrate this:

“Imagine that the world is a circle, that God is the center, and that the radii are the different ways human beings live. When those who wish to come closer to God walk towards the center of the circle, they come closer to one another at the same time as to God. The closer they come to God, the closer they come to one another. And the closer they come to one another, the closer they come to God.”

St. Paul also provides a great analogy for our journey together in holiness when in the twelfth chapter of his first letter to the Corinthian Church he writes that we are one body with many parts and no part is greater than the other. The eye cannot say to the hand “I have no need of you.”

A consumerist culture like ours breeds a kind of hyper-individualism that “tends to isolate us in a quest for well-being apart from others.” (GE) Thus, it is ever more important that we draw closer to our faith community in our pursuit of holiness.

FORMED RECOMMENDATION OF THE WEEK: The 13th Day “ In a world torn apart by persecution, war, and oppression, three children in Fatima, Portugal, were chosen by God to offer an urgent message of hope to the world. Based on the memoirs of the oldest seer, Lucia Santos, and many thousands of independent eye-witness accounts, The 13th Day dramatizes the true story of three young shepherds who experienced six apparitions of Our Lady between May and October 1917, which culminated in the final prophesied Miracle of the Sun on October 13. Abducted from their homes, thrown into prison, and interrogated under the threat of death in the government’s attempt to silence them, the children remained true to their story about the crucial messages from Mary of prayer, repentance, and conversion for the world.

Our Lady gave a secret to the children told in three parts, from a harrowing vision of hell, to prophetic warnings of future events including the advent and timing of the Second World War, the spread of Communism, and the attempted assassination of the Pope.

This movie is not rated, but was created with an adult audience in mind. It may contain violence indicative of the life and times of the saint or character portrayed. We would recommend Parental Guidance and that parents

preview it before watching with children.

Run Time: 1 hour 25 minutes

INCENSE REMINDER: Next weekend, May 20 (Pentecost Sunday) we will have full Incense at all four weekend Masses. Our next Saturday evening “clean” Mass will be May 26 (The Most Holy Trinity.)
