Mission Statement Today we celebrate Christ’s ascension into heaven and his commissioning of the disciples to carry on his mission in the world. First we hear Luke’s description of those events in the opening verses of the Acts of the Apostles. Next we hear words of encouragement and guidance from the Letter to the Ephesians. Finally we hear Mark’s account of the Ascension, foretelling the mighty words and acts the Christian community would do in Jesus’ name.
Together these scriptures give us a vision of the mission of the church of Jesus Christ—a mission statement of sorts. Like mission statements in our parishes and corporations, this mission statement can help us set priorities and focus our activities. It can guide and support us as we strive to continue Christ’s messianic mission on earth. Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.
Treasures From Our Tradition In Ireland and the United Kingdom, Mother’s Day is over. “Mothering Sunday” was on the Fourth Sunday of Lent. Long ago, people were freed from work to travel on this day to the parish where they were baptized, their “Mother Church.” Often, people were reunited with their mothers on this day. Employers would release their workers and servants for this visit. The American celebration, while based on this custom, really has to do with an anti-war movement of mothers in Civil War times. They crusaded for better sanitary conditions for their sons. When President Wilson instituted the first Mother’s Day in 1912, it was a day to fly the flag in honor of mothers whose children had died in battle. Knowing the tradition is a good balance to our celebration today. We can enfold in prayer the mothers who have suffered the loss of their children in war. Rev. James Field, Copyright © J. S. Sacraments, Liturgy and Prayer Exalted in Glory All three readings talk about Jesus being taken up into heaven or in a cloud or on high. These descriptions of the ascension actually tell us that Jesus is reunited with his Father and exalted in glory with the Father. Jesus not only has a new life that cannot be ended by death, he also is no longer limited by time or space as he was before he died. So what does that mean for us? Because he is not limited, he can be with us everywhere. Through his Spirit, he gives us the power and the courage to act as Jesus and the vision of faith so see Jesus in others. Now this takes some practice. One way we learn is through the lives of the saints. We see how God works through them to do great things. We learn that they become more and more like Jesus, in how they treat others with love and respect. But if the saints seem too distant, we can look at someone we love. Whether it is a parent, spouse, brother, sister or friend, the good that they do and the love they show is from God. So we can learn about God’s love for us by letting ourselves be loved by another. The other side of the coin is seeing Jesus in ourselves. We may have to forgive ourselves for the bad choices we have made in the past, or the bad habits we still have. We also have to accept that God really does love us as his children. And we have to accept that sometimes, even when we do our best, we still seem to fail. But the God who brings life out of death also brings success out of failure. So trust his promise that we have Jesus in us. Then do your best to follow Jesus and you may lead someone else to him. “We can all help encourage our government and other institutions to support life. They must always aid and support mothers and children, and never offer to pay for the destruction of life as a ‘solution’ to the challenges women face. The call to uphold women’s dignity and well-being, and that of their unborn children, is one and the same.” USCCB Secretariat of Pro-Life Activities “Poverty and Abortion: A Vicious Cycle,” www.bit.ly/poverty-abortion

Food Drive: Thanks!!! Thank you to everyone who brought food last weekend to support the Northshore Food Bank in stocking their shelves due to increased demand over the summer. Both trucks were filled! Among the donated food was 600 pounds of sugar from Domino’s (pictured is the car with its trunk full!). You are God’s hands on earth when you feed the hungry and care for others. As we receive your donations, we are privileged to see your smiles and visible joy that comes from your giving. May God richly bless you!
Isaiah 43 Program
Catholic Charities’ Isaiah 43 program has more children enrolled than mentors. We are searching for a few generous volunteers to step up so each child can be matched with a mentor. Isaiah 43 pairs young people ages 10-18 with mentors for a one-on-one relationship. The program focuses on building community, strengthening relationships, goal setting, and Christian values. Mentors are not perfect people. A good mentor is someone who listens and who is reliable and caring. Mentors must be at least 25 years old and commit four hours a month to the program for 14 months. You do not have to be Catholic to be an Isaiah 43 mentor, but you must belong to a Christian church and get a recommendation from a clergy member. Contact K. Patrick Kemmerly at [email protected] for more information.

Called By Name One of the ways the Vocation Ministry at Our Lady of the Lake is asking for support from our parishioners is by prayerfully considering young men and women who may be called to the Priesthood or Religious Life. Perhaps the Lord Jesus is calling him/her to consider a life of service in the Church as a Priest, Sister, Brother or Deacon. Parishioners can put forth names of potential individuals by filling out one of the “Called by Name” cards, which are available in the Church office. These cards have been provided by the Vocation Office in the Archdiocese of New Orleans. Fill out the back and place it in the collection basket or give it to the church office. Your name is optional. You may also email Dwight and Mary Johnston at [email protected] and give the name, phone number and email of the person you see as a good candidate.
FORMED: New Programs Thanks to funding by the Knights of Columbus, two new documentaries are available on FORMED. “The Face of Mercy” explores the history and relevance of Divine Mercy in our turbulent times. “Guadalupe: the Miracle and the Message” recounts the apparition of the Virgin Mary, under the title of Our Lady of Guadalupe, to Juan Diego. Both of these documentaries are narrated by actor, Jim Caviezel, known for his roles as Jesus in The Passion of the Christ and Luke in Paul, Apostle of Christ. Visit formed.org and log in using our parish code: 9T98RK. Click on “Watch”, then scroll down for find the documentaries.
