HOLY WEEK

For the Palm Sunday Gospel, we return to the Gospel according to Mark. The account of the Passion takes up nearly one-third of Mark’s entire Gospel and, of all the evangelists, he is the one who presents the details most graphically.

He depicts the humanity of Jesus most intensely, describing His sufferings thoroughly. Mark portrays Jesus as a complete fulfillment of the “Suffering Servant” of Isaiah, the obedient, humble slave dying on a cross of whom Paul speaks in Philippians.

But it is important to remember that we call this “Holy Week” and not “sad week” or “suffering week,” for each of the readings today, even the lamentations of the psalm, end in the promise of the strength and hope that is granted by God to those who faithfully give of themselves in love.

As we enter into this week through these readings, we must reflect deeply on the sufferings of Jesus, but still be confident in the joy of risen, eternal life that awaits all of us who faithfully walk with Him through these days.

My friends in Christ:

What is Holy Week?

Since the beginning of Christianity, Holy Week has been celebrated with a profound feeling of sanctity. However, last year was the first time, and God willing the last time in our lives, when our churches were closed because of the pandemic and we had to live-stream Holy Week services. Thank God that this year we will all be able to come to church for Holy Week.

The Lenten Season of sacrifice and self-denial is about to come to an end. Holy Week begins with Palm Sunday, also known as Passion Sunday, which marks Jesus’ triumphant entry into Jerusalem. This solemn celebration draws the Christian community into the Easter Triduum. This includes Holy Thursday, when we reenact the Lord’s Last Supper, followed by Good Friday, in which we enter into the Crucifixion of Our Lord and venerate the Cross. The culmination of Holy Week is Easter, where we celebrate with great joy the Resurrection of Jesus, Our Savior. For those who still cannot come to church because of health reasons, on Palm Sunday we will place a basket of blessed palm outside the main entrance of the church at 1:00 PM for anyone to stop by and pick up a couple pieces of blessed palm. In the early Church, all Christians participated in the special liturgical celebrations of Holy Week. This was “God’s time” and they didn’t let anything interfere with it. I know that we all have so many responsibilities and often find it difficult to reserve time for our spiritual lives, but I remind you that Holy Week is still “God’s time.” I have attached the schedule below for the Sacred Paschal Triduum. Please consider attending as many liturgies as you can during this most holy week of the year:

NEWS FROM ST. JUDE SCHOOL

Our St. Jude School family, built on mercy and reaching out in love, is supporting the Lenten One-Can-Meal Drive in collaboration with the Nutritional Development Services of the Archdiocese of Philadelphia. This collection helps to stock food cupboards for the many hungry people in our area.

Our eighth graders are reaching out with mercy and in love for children who suffer from childhood cancer. Each month, we have a "yellow dress down day" to honor the dream of Alex Scott and the Alex Lemonade Foundation: "to cure childhood cancer one cup at a time." Donations are sent to the ALSF with our love and prayers.

Financial Aid for the 2021 – 2022 School Year: St. Jude School has been fortunate to receive tuition assistance from St. Jude parishioners and businesses from the Educational Improvement Tax Credit program through the Business Leadership Organization for Catholic Schools (BLOCS). These funds provide school families with tuition assistance, allowing many children to continue their enrollment at St. Jude School. In light of the recent economic hardships many may be facing, we want to encourage any family (PreK – 8th Grade) who may be eligible to apply this year directly to FACTS, following the established deadlines. For more information about financial aid at SJS, visit our website, www.stjudeschool.com, and click on Scholarships and Financial Aid located under Admissions.

Registration at St. Jude School is now open for the 2021-2022 school year. We have availability for new students in select grades. Please check our website, www.stjudeschool.com, for information about the admissions process. Call Pat Kerwin to schedule a tour or for more information (215-822-9225 x 251).

I consecrate my family to your honor and give my family to your loving care, that you may always be our father, our protector, and our guide in the way of salvation.

Obtain for us a sincere purity of heart and a fervent love for the spiritual life.

O Blessed Joseph, please pray for my family that we may share in the peace and joy of a holy death. Amen.

A Child’s Prayer to Saint Joseph

St. Joseph,

Watch over me and care for me just as you cared for the Child Jesus, and by your help, may I come to know your Son, and so grow in strength and wisdom and the favor of God. Amen.

For those parishioners who are still homebound during this Lent and Easter season, we want you to have the opportunity to encounter our Lord in your own homes. A member of our "Outreach Team" will come to your home wearing a mask, sanitizing their hands and conducting a brief Communion service in your doorway to minimize any health or safety concerns.

If you desire to receive the Eucharist in your home, simply contact the parish office at 215-822-0179 or [email protected]. > Please provide your name, address, cell phone number, and 2-3 available time slots. > Please also provide the number of people receiving Communion.

Our St. Jude Parish "Outreach Team" will contact you to arrange for the time and date of their Communion visit.

Please tell any parishioners you know who are not attending Mass right now that this option is available!
