• Joe’s desire is to continue to serve until 70 or beyond if health permits. An outside hire would almost certainly mean Joe would have to leave.

• Typically, when a new senior pastor from the outside follows a much-loved, twenty-year tenured pastor, they often become known as the “first interim” and the church loses its ministry momentum.

• After much prayer and multiple meetings, we believe that Brian’s skill set fits exactly what LMPC needs and would provide consistency of vision and mission. In October 2018, Brian will be the same age that Joe was when he began his senior pastor role (43).

Was Frank Hitchings considered for the senior pastor role?

• He was considered. But Frank loves his work, is excited about the recommended plan, works well with Brian, and will continue to report to the Session as he does today.

• Brian and Frank, who already meet regularly, will begin to meet even more frequently and closely to collaborate on the implementation of LMPC’s vision.

Why communicate this now when it’s coming into effect over 18 months from now?

• It gives the congregation time to process the changes and ask questions.

• It makes the process, including the Presbytery vote, orderly and more transparent.

• It allows us to move forward in implementing the long-term vision of LMPC.

How does this affect titles and responsibilities?

• Joe’s new title will be Pastor of Teaching and Senior Adults.

• Brian will become the Senior Teaching Pastor and moderator of the Session, reporting to the Session.

• Frank’s title and responsibilities will not be affected by these changes. He will maintain existing direct reports (minus Brian) and will continue to report to the Session.

How does this announcement timing and age of senior pastor compare to other situations?

• Previous LMPC senior pastor George Long gave the Session two years’ notice at age 63 and retired at age 65.

• Sandy Willson gave Second Presbyterian Church of Memphis two years’ notice at age 64 and retired at age 66.

• Tim Keller of Redeemer Presbyterian Church planned for pastoral succession for many years before changing roles at age 66. All three associate pastors at Redeemer’s three campuses are becoming the senior pastors as they particularize each as a church.

Why not have a national search? Is Brian Salter the best candidate for the senior pastor job?

• An outside hire would also almost certainly break up the team concept that is working so well.

Summer 2018 Tennesseee Valley Presbytery Vote on new calls for Pastor Novenson and Pastor Salter

October 2018 Effective Date of Pastoral Staffing Changes

As this chart illustrates, our worship attendance numbers have plateaued. This means we need to start making a strategic plan for the future, and this process begins with planning for pastoral succession.

The Session recommends that Joe Novenson transition away from his role as Senior Teaching Pastor in October 2018, when he turns 66 years old. At that point he he would remain in full time ministry and become Pastor of Teaching and Senior Adults. The Session also recommends that Associate Pastor Brian Salter take over the role of Senior Teaching Pastor and moderator of the Session in October 2018. The congregation is required to vote on these recommended changes.
