The Annual Catholic Appeal (ACA)—Time to “Pay It Forward” In this month of February we begin this year’s Diocesan Annual Catholic Appeal (ACA). “Love letters” from me will be in the mail soon.

Please take time to read and reflect on this information. I pray that it will move you to support this Appeal. This year’s goal is $3.5 million.

Proceeds: $77,572

For more information, contact the Parish Office: 760-758-4100 x100 or [email protected]

Offertory Envelopes As a visible sign of stewardship, we sent out Offertory Envelopes to everyone in the Parish, even to those who donate to the Parish via credit card or automatic withdrawal. The hope was that even if you were giving in those ways, you would still bring the empty envelope to Mass and place in the Offertory Collection as a visible sign of your commitment to stewardship.

We had a very minimal response to this effort, so this practice was eliminated.

If you give electronically and would like to demonstrate a visible sign of stewardship at the Offertory Collection, you may pick up I Give Electronically cards at the information table. Thank you!

Liturgy & Music Douglas Lynn Director of Liturgy and Music

[email protected]; 760-758-4100 x140

I recently asked my co-workers to share their responses to the following statement: “It’s been years since I…” Their responses sparked reflective, fun and poignant memories. “It’s been years since I… rode a bike, owned a cat, went fishing, ran barefoot outside, watched old home movies, raised my voice in song in a church choir, rocked my babies to sleep, called an old friend, flew a kite, went bowling with my sisters.”

What memories do these responses bring to your mind and heart? What is it that you have not done in many years?

This year, the season of Lent will begin on March 6. This slightly later start provides the universal church the opportunity to do something we haven’t done in years. On March 3, we will celebrate the Eighth Sunday in Ordinary Time, Year C. Although we hear Psalm 92 more than once in our cycle of readings, it’s been several years since these assigned readings have been proclaimed: Sirach 27:4-7, 1 Corinthians 15:54- 58, and Luke 6:39-45.

Now I doubt that many parishes will celebrate with trumpets and fanfare, confetti or a cake, but it feels as if we should give this special occurrence some attention. Perhaps one way to do so is to consider how we are giving the word of God itself the place of importance it deserves in our lives.

On March 5, 2017, Pope Francis asked those gathered in St. Peter’s Square to give the Bible as much attention as they give their cellphone asking, “What would happen if we treated the Bible like we treat our cellphone? If we always took it with us, if we turned back when we forget it, if we opened it several times a day, if we read God’s

messages in the Bible as we read the messages of our phones.”

Francis’ challenge prompted me to do a little digging. Exactly how much time are people spending on their cellphones? What would be your own best guess?

Can you imagine what would happen if we made the commitment to turn even ten percent of that time over to reading, studying and praying with the word of God? How would our doing so shape our minds, our spirits and our hearts? How would it impact our approach to the day, our attitudes toward and responses to family members and coworkers, our decisions as consumers and our plans for the future? How might such a commitment challenge and change us?

As we approach Lent, make a resolution that can be life changing. Answer the pope’s challenge. Treat the Bible like your cellphone. Apart from reading Scripture in order to prepare for Sunday’s Mass or to participate in a Bible study, set aside time to listen—to really listen—to God’s word for you. Use the Little Book for Lent and begin with a small amount of time each day, and trust that the seed of God’s word will grow within you, challenge you, and change you.

Sit with the readings for the upcoming weekends, especially for the weekend of March 3. Be attentive to the images—a shaken sieve, the work of the potter, the cedar of Lebanon, and the sting of death. Reflect on Jesus’ words about the wooden beam in your eye, good trees and good hearts. Open your ears and your heart to receive this seldom-proclaimed part of God’s word. Treat it as the treasure it is meant to be.

TOWERS OF FAITH

Future Support & Legacy Planning Options

Towers of Faith is a movement that has arisen due to the vision, leadership and generosity of several of our Parishioners. We stress that this is about the love and thought behind the gift, and not about the gift amount.

These individuals (several anonymous) have included STM in their estate planning. This helps to ensure their ongoing support and a legacy for our Parish. Towers of Faith is a valuable portion of our future support.

Examples of the various future planning vehicles are:

Designated Beneficiary Accounts, Wills, Living Trusts, Life Insurance, Stocks and Bonds, Real Estate, and

STM Endowment with CCFSD (Catholic Community Foundation of San Diego)

Parishioners who have already included STM in their estate plans are Towers of Faith participants. If you are interested, please contact us. Your participation is most welcome and appreciated!

We are now in the fourteenth month of our 36-month Campaign. Have you made a pledge to the St. Thomas More: A Parish For All Seasons Capital Campaign?

Your help is needed! We still have a long way to go…

We cannot all give the same amount, but we can all make the same sacrifice.

In the branches: Purposefulness, Health, Joy, Self-Motivation, Self-Motivation, Contentment, Acceptance, Fulfillment, and Creativity.

In the roots: Charity, Friendship, Forgiveness, Love, Gratitude, Kindness, Warmth, and Trust.*

A Church is like a tree, and its members are like leaves. We need our constant donations of time, talent, and treasure to keep us going.

Let us all become a true and fruitful branch on the vine Jesus, by accepting him in our lives as it pleases him to come:

† as the Truth—to be told;

† as the Life—to be lived;

† as the Light—to be lighted;

† as the Love—to be loved;

† as the Way—to be walked;

† as the Joy—to be given;

† as the Peace—to be spread;

† as the Sacrifice—to be offered,

… in our families and within our neighborhood.

There are multiple ministries at STM which help to carry out the mission and ministry of Jesus throughout the year: taking the Eucharist to the sick and homebound, serving at Brother Benno’s the first Saturday of each month, donating toiletries and clothing for Brother Benno’s, bringing non-perishable food items for Solutions for Change, taking dinner to residents at the Intake Shelter for Solutions for Change once a month, donating blood during the ARC Blood Drives at STM, helping with Disability Facilitation, to name just a few.

Page 10 of the bulletin lists a number of ways to participate.

Please contact me if you have questions about becoming more involved. Contact information at the top of this page. —Chris

Sacrificial Giving Sacrificial Giving is the process of consciously examining one’s household income and making a decision to give a percentage of it to the Church. If the “leap of faith” of tithing seems to be too great for you, we ask that you consider the “gradual approach.” Please examine and review not only the dollar amount that you presently give to St. Thomas More, but the percentage of your gross household income that dollar amount represents.

When you add up all your gifts to St. Thomas More, what percentage is that amount of your gross household income? Maybe it is ½%, 1%, 3%, or more? You are encouraged to increase it by a percentage each year until you have made that leap of Faith and are tithing.

Remember that the Lord is never outdone in generosity. Pray that more and more of us are willing to be challenged by the Biblical directive to give back to the Lord a tithe of all that we have and are.

Percentage of Income ►

10% 8% 6% 4% 2%

$10,000 $ 19 $ 15 $ 12 $ 8 $ 4

$30,000 58 46 35 23 12

Amount of Weekly Gift Tithing Parishioners are invited to tithe (10% of all gross household income) to the Lord—8% to St. Thomas More Catholic Church and 2% to other charities of your choice. The tithe covers the following: † Parish Operational Offering † Seasons Capital Campaign † Religious Education Fees * † Sacrament Stipends (Baptisms, Weddings, Funerals) † Annual Catholic Appeal (ACA) † All National Collections:

Annual Lenten Collection Collection of the Holy Father (Peter’s Pence) Propagation of the Faith (Mission Appeal) World Missions Collection National Needs Collection Retirement Fund for Religious Collection

* The tithe includes the cost of activities which are mandatory for the religious education program, but not for activities that are optional.

The Seasons Capital Campaign receives half of the 8% St. Thomas More tithe, with the other half being distributed among the remaining items.

Care ofRetired PriestsWhen a diocesan priest is ordained, he makes a lifelong commitment to serve the needs of the faithful in our diocese, typically serving 40 to 45 years in ministry. In return, the diocese makes a commitment to the priest to provide for his basic well-being during his lifetime, including retirement.

Everyone is aware of the need to appropriately provide for the spiritual, material, and medical needs during their senior years. Priests have the same concerns. They want to have a certain level of confidence that someone will attend to the nurturing of their faith, helping them find an appropriate physical environment, and assist them when their bodies or minds decline with the passage of time. We play an important part in adding to their sense of security about their senior years.

The normal retirement age for a priest in our diocese is at age 75. Retirement costs including insurance, healthcare, prescription drugs, skilled nursing care, and housing and sustenance continue to escalate. At present, one-third of our diocesan priests are retired.

Our retired priests have a profound trust in the Lord and His Holy Mother; they have a profound trust in the gratitude and generosity of the people of the diocese. Our 2 retired bishops and 50 retired priests rely on the Lord and His people to sustain them in their senior years. As age and physical ability permit, they continue to witness the love of God. They continue to live a life of prayer and sacramental participation.

The Annual Catholic Appeal supports care of retired priests so that they can live in dignity, and free of anxiety about their means of support. This includes providing health and auto insurance, nursing care at Nazareth House San Diego if needed, supplementing their pension when necessary, and covering expenses for them to attend the annual convocation of priests.

The Annual Catholic Appeal (ACA)— Time to “Pay It Forward” In this month of February we begin this year’s Diocesan Annual Catholic Appeal (ACA). “Love letters” from me will be in the mail soon.

Please take time to read and reflect on this information. I pray that it will move you to support this Appeal. This year’s goal is $3.5 million.

As we, the Parish of St. Thomas More, have been helped by the Diocese, it is now our time to help our Diocese and our sister parishes.

If you have not supported the ACA in the past, this is the year to begin to do so. If you have supported the ACA in the past, and you are in a position to increase your gift, this is the year to do so.

Here are some facts and figures that are important information for you to have as you reflect upon your gift to the ACA.

Know that all that you do is much appreciated by me!

Did You Know?

1. The ten acres of land on which our Parish Campus is built was a GIFT from the Diocese of San Diego.

It has been the policy of the Diocese that it provides the land on which new Parishes will build their Campuses.

2. The Diocese of San Diego provided St. Thomas More Parish with a $2 million INTEREST FREE loan to help us in the building of our Parish Center.

We had been paying down this loan sporadically between 1999 and 2006.

Then in January 2006 we began paying down the debt at $11,000/month.

Our last payment was in December, 2011.

3. The Diocese of San Diego helped us to secure a $6.6 million loan with the National Office of the Knights of Columbus which allowed us to move forward and build our Permanent Church. Due to our good financial standing, the Diocese easily agreed to be the “second” on this loan.

4. The Annual Catholic Appeal (ACA) is our yearly opportunity to engage in the Diocesan effort to participate in Jesus’ mission of teaching, sanctifying, and serving.

5. The goal of this year’s ACA is $3.5 million. The money will be directed for these purposes: A. Catholic Schools & Tuition Assistance: $1,000,000 B. Formation in the Faith: $600,000 C. Retired Priests: $500,000 D. Catholic Charities: $500,000 E. Seminarian Support: $500,000 F. Young Adult Ministry: $250,000 G. Prison Ministry: $150,000

6. Our Fair Share Assessment this year is $50,000. This provides us with the opportunity “to pay it forward” and to assist not only the ongoing mission of Jesus on a Diocesan level, but to directly help other sister Parishes in our Diocese who are in need.

Just as we have been helped, it is now our turn to help other Parishes.

7. Last year, only 335 STM households out of 1,247 chose to participate in the ACA. Last year our assessment was $50,000.

We raised $65,002 from 27% of the Parish. The average gift was $194.

Let us double the number of households participating in the ACA this year. I know that we can do this!

8. 100% of the money raised over our $50,000 assessment will be returned to our Parish and it will be directed to the Operations Budget to help us balance our bottom line. Last year, a little over $15,000 was returned to the Parish and was directed to our Operations Budget.

9. Beginning this weekend, and continuing for several weekends, you will find Bulletin inserts describing how the ACA money is directed and used. Please take time to read these inserts each week.

Please respond favorably to my “love letter.” Please prayerfully reflect upon this information and act accordingly.

Thank you!

Diocese of San Diego Daily Prayer for Priests and Women Religious March 2019

O Jesus, I pray for your faithful and fervent priests; For your unfaithful and tepid priests; For your priests laboring at home or abroad in distant mission fields. For your tempted priests; For your lonely and desolate priests; For your young priests; For your dying priests; For the souls of your priests in Purgatory. But above all, I recommend to you the priests dearest to me: The priest who baptized me; The priests who absolved me from my sins; The priests at whose Masses I assisted and who gave me Your Body and Blood in Holy Communion; The priests who taught and instructed me; All the priests to whom I am indebted in any other way (especially ………….). O Jesus, keep them all close to your heart, And bless them abundantly in time and in Eternity. Amen. By St. Therese of Lisieux

Heavenly Father, in your wisdom you have called certain women to a life of special consecration so that in prayerful observance of a lifestyle of poverty, chaste celibacy, and obedience, they might be witnesses to us that as St. Paul says, “our true citizenship is in heaven.” Give them, Lord, the grace of joy and perseverance in their holy vocation. We ask this through Christ, our Lord.

Daily Prayer for Vocations Jesus, Lord of the harvest, Look with love on this portion of your vineyard. Bless the Diocese of San Diego with more priests to shepherd your people, Priests with hearts like your own. Mary, Mother of the Church, pray for us.
