Pastor’s Peace/Piece
My first Pastor’s Peace/Piece in this newsletter was in May 2007. Surprise Lilies had popped up in the yard at the parsonage and I wrote about that.
When you move to a new place, there are potential blossoms lurking beneath the soil that don’t show themselves until an appropriate time. I am also discovering some wonderful things about this congregation, some of which were immediately obvious when I visited here back in February [2007]. One of the greatest gifts is the leadership that Guyton Christian Church has. In every area of the life of the church there are persons who are standing up to make sure that we have vital worship, Christian education, nurture appro-priate for our every age, and outreach and evangelism to our neighbors. I hope that the things you have learned about me are pleasant too.
Now, almost ten years later, I write my last Pastor’s Piece/Peace, with tears in my eyes. The love and respect we share is no longer a surprise. Thank you for giving me a chance when I was broken from parish ministry and was at the age no one wants to consider for calling a pastor. Friends in Kentucky and elsewhere asked why I was moving to Georgia. They asked if I had family there. I do now. I came because mutual friends recommended us to each other and you called me. I think it has worked out well. There have been more changes at Guyton Christian Church than we may have noticed over the last decade. People have died. Others have moved away. Some have left for other reasons. New people have found a church home here. Children have grown up. We have begun new ministries for children and youth and mission programs that match the Missional Church model. Credit is due to the presence of the Spirit of the Living God, the gifts of leadership I discovered here in 2007, and to a pastor who discovered again that he was doing what he should have been doing with his life. Kay and I have found a house to move to in Little Rock, Arkansas. We will find out how to live in retirement and what God has in store for us in our new season of life. March 1, Ash Wednesday, begins a new season in the Church and a new season for Guyton Christian Church too. The Rev. Dr. Fred Craddock told me when he was here in 2008 that he saw a healthy church here. Even in uncertain times, your prognosis is good. Just keep being who you are called to be—welcoming to all, loving with each other, trusting in the Spirit, and sharing your abundance with others.
Grace and Peace,
Guyton Christian Church

The Effingham County School Board and our Church Board have entered into an agreement to use space in the old high school/middle school on Hwy 119 between Guyton and Springfield as a new location for
our food pantry, The Fillin’ Station. The old cafeteria there offers walk-in freezer and re-frigerator, storage space with shelves, an of-fice, bathrooms and lots of work room. Our volunteers are excited about the move. There will be no rent for the building. We will pay
