    John Jaaper Marsh was born July 9,1828 in Irwin County, GA, the son ofReuben and Nancy l,tarshall Marsh ofTelfair County, GA, and later of IrwingCounty, eA. He spent his youth near theAlapaha River where his parents farmedand operated Marsh's Ferry. This area ofold Irwin County is now in BerrienCounty, GA.

    On Nov. 15, 1846 he married RebeccaHaII, daughter of John R. Hall and RhodaGriffin HalI of Lowndes County, cA andIater, Madison County, FL. John R. HaIIwas the son of Enock HalI (R.S. ) and hiswife Nancy Jackson HaIl. About 1851,John Jasper Marsh moved his family toMarion County, FL and located south ofFort McCoy, near the Ocklawaha River"John Jasper Marsh died 8 Oct 1892 and hiswife Rebecca died 22 JuI 1899. Both areburied in the Fort McCoy Cemetery, MarionCounty, FL. John and Rebecca Marsh hadthe following children:1. James Marsh b. 24 Dec LA47 marriedMartha E. Geiger2. Emily Marsh b. 8 Apr 1865, d. 13 Feb1934 married William J. Hogan 27 Jul 1890

    Reuben Marsh, the son of John JasperMarsh and Rebecca Hal_I Marsh, was born 7Jun 1851 and died 28 Mar 1902. The Marshfamily moved in the early 1850's toMarion County, FL and settled near Gore'sLanding, southeast of Fort McCoy, at aplace called Marshville. The MarshFamily r^rere f armers and in the timberbusiness. Reuben operated a sawmill atMarshville and several of his childrendid extremely well in the turpentine andnaval store industry in the early 19OO's.

    On 15 Jun l87l Ruben Marsh married alocal girl, Susan Piety Sherouse. Shewas the daughter of John ChristopherSherouse and his second wife, MatildaGrantham Sherouse. Susan Piety Sherouser^ras the granddaughter of GottliebSherouse and Sarah Salome FreyermouthSherrouse, originally of the EbenezerCommunity in Effingham County, cA. TheSherrouse ancestors had settled in theEbenezer Community in t74L, coming fromSalzburg, cermany (now in Austria). Theywere Protestants who had been persecutedfor their religion in the Bishopic ofSalzburg, and they came to America insearch of religious freedom. GottliebSherouse and three of his sons (,John C.,Israel, and Clatus) received land underthe Florida Armed Occupation Act of 1842- 43. In the first Florida StatehoodElection, held in t845t Gottlieb, JohnC., and Israel Sherouse all voted atEbenezer Meeting House in Marion County,FL. The 1850 census shows GottliebSherouse, age 56, Clatus Sherouse, age 26and Israel Sherouse living in AlachuaCounty, EL, probably living near Windsor.John C. Sherouse remained in MarionCounty, FL.

    Susan Sherouse Marsh's grandfather,Elijah Grantham had settled about onemile north of the old forl, in an areaknown as Fort McCoy. He had a generalstore and the first Post Office in thecommunity, al} located in his home.After 1850 he also established astage-stop in his home.

    The old Bible records gives themarriages of Reuben and Susan Marsh'schildren, except their son Leonard whomarried Ruby Grantham. Reuben & SusanMarsh's daughter, Susan Ida Marsh died asa small child"

    Marguerite Dillman has been working ontranscribing the Marion County marriagerecords to file cards. The informationon the file cards has been entered into acomputer data base. Ho/Mccs wishes tothank shirley Uartin Lovell for donatingthe use of her IBM lap top computer fordirect entry of the Marion CountyMarriage records. Most all of therecords through 19OO have been entered inthe data base. ?he process of correctingquestionable data base entries in now inprogress.
