heard plenty of grumbling about road construction season this year. You’ve probably uttered a few choice words behind the wheel yourself. It seems the majority of our commuters have too often been finding themselves in the slow lane since the first orange cones appeared this spring.

If there is a silver lining, it’s that you know it won’t last forever – and it’s summer – the best time of the year in Minnesota. So relax. Take a deep breath. Put on your shades. The City Where Life Blooms

There are 20 states that have a Bloomington in the good old USA and, while we may be a bit biased, surely the best is the one Normandale Lake Office Park calls home. That’s because our

Bloomington has so much to offer. It’s not just a great place to work. Outstanding shopping, dining, entertainment and outdoor recreation opportunities abound right here in this fair city. Best of all, it’s within minutes of our prestigious address.

Highland Lake Park ReserveWe’ve mentioned it before in our newsletter, but it bears repeating.

This remarkable area managed by the City of Bloomington and Three Rivers Park District offers 2,565 acres of scenic prairie landscapes and a major body of water boasting miles of hiking and biking trails and many great recreational opportunities to enjoy all year ‘round.

Mall of AmericaThis renowned shopping, dining and entertainment experience is one of

the top tourist destinations in the country. The Mall of America opened its doors in August of 1992 and is considered the largest mall in the United States in terms of number of retail stores and total floor area. 42 million people from around the world visit the Mall of America each year.

But the Mall of America isn’t the only place to find popular retail venues in Bloomington. The area in and around Southtown Center offers easy-in, easy-out stores for shopping of all kinds.

Hotels and Restaurants GaloreBecause of the close proximity to Minneapolis-St. Paul International

Airport and the Mall of America, the Bloomington 494 Strip is dotted with some of the best hotels in the nation. Among them, you’ll also find a multitude of excellent dining experiences, several of which are located right here in Normandale Lake Office Park.

• Bloomington, MN is the 4th largest city and named after Bloomington, Illinois.

• In 1839, after renewed conflict with the Ojibwa nation, Chief Cloud Man relocated his band of the Mdewakanton Dakota from Lake Calhoun, Bde Maka Ska in Minneapolis to an area named Oak Grove in southern Bloomington, close to present-day Portland Avenue.

• In 1843, Peter and Louisa Quinn, the first European settlers to live in Bloomington, built a cabin along the Minnesota River in this area. The government had sent them to teach farming methods to the Native Americans.

• On May 11, 1858 the day Minnesota was admitted into the union, 25 residents incorporated the Town of Bloomington.

• On August 21, 1965, The Beatles played Metropolitan Stadium, their only stop ever in the Minneapolis-St. Paul Metropolitan Area.

• Parts of the Coen brothers film A Serious Man were filmed in an East Bloomington neighborhood. The neighborhood was chosen for its original suburban ranch-style houses and young trees, giving it a 1960s new-development look.

• In May 2006 the Water Park of America opened, the ninth largest indoor waterpark in the United States.

• About one third of the city of Bloomington is permanently reserved for park purposes, including the Minnesota Valley’s wetlands and the Hyland Lake Park Reserve.

• Hyland Park includes both a ski area and the Nordic ski jumps, maintained by the Minneapolis Ski Club. Several U.S. Olympic ski jumpers have come from this ski club.

• Bloomington was the point of growth for Pickleball in Minnesota, beginning about 2005 when retirees brought the sport back from their southern winter retreats.

Fascinating Facts Make Someone Smile

When was the last time a total stranger made you smile. On the elevator? In the produce aisle? On a walk? It felt good, didn’t it?

Studies show that smiling reduces stress, improves your mood and makes you more likeable. Knowing all of that, when was the last time you made a total stranger smile?

It’s time to put down your cell phone and try it for yourself. Make eye contact with someone, say hello and give them a smile. Pay someone a compliment – it’s a great gift that costs you nothing. Offer someone assistance – whether it’s opening a door, helping with groceries or lending a neighbor a hand. It’s just as rewarding giving a smile as getting one.

Smiling connects us with others. It’s a universal language that spreads joy and happiness across the globe. It’s something we need more of today. Pass it on.
