When Tom Brady, an architect with global telecommunications corporation

Alcatel-Lucent, needed to renovate large spaces inside the company’s

Murray Hill, New Jersey, corporate campus, he sought to create a new look

that would appeal to a new generation.

For the campus’ soaring atriums, spacious dining halls, and stairwells,

Brady and his team chose Patcraft modular carpet tile and broadloom in

a variety of patterns and colors – truly vivid ones.

BRIGHT IDEAS

“The idea was for it to be bright. Neon blue, neon green, and orange, plus charcoal grays. We wanted the design to be more modern, to appeal to the younger people coming into the company and to younger people that we’d like to hire in the future,” says Brady.

A former Bell Labs facility originally constructed in the late 1960s, the 1.7 million square foot campus featured mostly concrete and brick. So Patcraft carpet patterns like Drive broadloom in the stairwells, and Flutter, In Flight, Dart, and Color Choice carpet tile in the atriums and dining halls, helped to inject visual energy, says Brady. Modern furniture was also selected, blending well with the contemporary flair of the Patcraft carpet patterns.

Patcraft’s modular carpet tile also works well in busy food halls where employees gather for lunches or breaks, says Brady.

“One reason we chose modular carpet tile is that if you spill coffee on it, it’s easy to clean and you can just pop out tiles if you need to replace them,” he says. “Anything we use just has to be easily cleaned. If any major spill happens, it needs to be easily replaced.”

CATCHING THE LIGHT

Brady was renovating multi-story atriums with high skylights, so he wanted carpet to play off the natural light in the spaces. Patcraft’s wide selection of brightly colored carpet tiles fit his vision.

“They were brighter than the other carpet comps. That’s how it all started,” he says. Installation was also smooth, and Patcraft was able to replace a two-lot order of green carpet tiles with one lot. “I think the final look is pleasing. In the beginning, people were definitely surprised by the bright colors, but there are no complaints. I’d consider using it again,” says Brady.

“Our intent with this design was to attract younger people by making the space bright and airy,” he says. “These carpet colors really help to brighten the space.”
