PATENT PORTFOLIO FOR HEAD MOUNT DISPLAYS (HMDs)
Emerging growth market for smart and stylish wearable optics Recent analysts reports1 provide a forecast that by 2018 about one third of all smart wearable products will have near eye HMDs with transparent interfaces incorporated into attractive and fashionable designs, driving mainstream consumer adoptions. These HMDs will support augmented reality applications in consumer-grade lightweight video eyeglass form-factors. Augmented reality glasses may be transformative and become the interface of choice for smart wearable devices, gradually replacing the handheld smart-phone for many applications.
Technologies The patent portfolio embodies novel technologies used in the development of small form-factor HMDs for distributed and collaborative augmented reality applications. These new HMD technologies include:
Compact optical designs with microlenslets & illuminators
Eye tracking Eye glass designs Eye & head motion analysis Freeform optics design for non-symmetric,
off-axis configurations Narrow to wide field of views with variable
resolution Projected high brightness microdisplays See-through optics with occlusion support 3D depth overlays
The portfolio enables design trade-offs between packaging size & weight, field of view and resolution.
Market sectors and applications This broad technology portfolio can be incoporated into current HMD designs as well as empowering the development of next generation wearable optics. Market sectors that may more rapidly adopt augmented reality HMDs include:
Consumer products Education & training Entertainment & sports Industrial equipment Medical devices Security & defense
Key applications include collaborative learning, driver safety, equipment assembly & maintenance, interactive shopping & tourism, real-time navigation & location awareness, wireless video and others.
