Dear citizens and friends of Paternoster, M ahatma Gandhi once said: “If we are to reach real peace in this world… we shall have to begin with children.” This is exactly what the Paternoster Project NPC aims to do: to start with the children. Start with those among us who are undeniably innocent, who are undeniably honest and who are undeniably the future of our village: our youngest children. Then help educate them by assisting and empowering dedicated teachers and volunteers in order for the children of Paternoster to become doctors and engineers and firemen and nurses and teachers and scientists and fishermen, and also great parents. The Paternoster Project NPC aims to offer each child the opportunity of education, through which dreams can come true. To this end, the buy-in of countless role players is required if a young child is to be given the wings of education, the freedom of an inquisitive mind, the compass of a life of purpose and the confidence that comes with knowledge. To these people – the people who support the Paternoster Project NPC and St Augustine’s Primary School with time, effort, money and commitment – we tip our hats. Dear citizens and friends of Paternoster,

Mahatma Gandhi once said: “If we are to reach real peace in this world… we shall have to begin with

children.” This is exactly what the Paternoster Project NPC aims to do: to start with the children. Start with those among us who are undeniably innocent, who are undeniably honest and who are undeniably the future of our village: our youngest children. Then help educate them by assisting and empowering

dedicated teachers and volunteers in order for the children of Paternoster to become doctors and engineers and firemen and nurses and teachers and scientists and fishermen, and also great parents.

For in the magical forest of our children’s minds, you are the safe towers, the bridges that span the dangerous ravines and the cool streams that refresh tired feet. You bring the magic, the safety and the hope. You lift

our children high enough to reach that which so often looks so far away: their dreams. For that, we can never thank you enough.

When we started the foundation – Kinder Fördern Zukunft Stiften -

in 2009, we had the wish to give something back to those who were largely responsible for our success as a children’s magazine publisher in Germany: the children.

The foundation had ambitious goals: namely to offer opportunities to young people, regardless of their social or economic background, to give them direction and prospects for their future. So, for many years, we supported the setting up of school libraries, exclusively in Germany, or financed academic studies on the topic of promoting reading skills. We also supported the German Children’s Non-fiction Literature Award and played a major role in reading projects for refugees from Syria and Iraq.

Until one day, when an old friend from South Africa, Jaco van der Westhuizen, called and asked us for help for the schoolchildren of Paternoster. We share his love for South Africa and for us, Jaco represents what we appreciate so much besides the wonderful countryside: friendly, open-minded, honest people who are full of life.

Jaco had become managing director of the local fishery just a few months before, and appealed to us in his charming, but nonetheless direct, way: “If you really want to do justice to the purpose of your foundation, come to Paternoster and support our 200 schoolchildren. They will be grateful to you like nowhere else in the world. Show them alternative job perspectives, give them hope and make sure that they leave school with a good education.”

We first went to Paternoster shortly before Christmas 2015. We met Jaco, Sanita van der Merwe and Ben Rootman, and made plans as to how the foundation could also be involved successfully in South Africa in the future. Jaco and the friends from the Paternoster People’s Partnership expanded on their ideas: the support should not be purely financial, but in the form of German students assigned by the foundation to help the children of Paternoster. And with that, the Paternoster Project was born.

Just a few months later, the concept for a promising project was approved. For a period of at least three months, students from the University of Education/Weingarten should support the children of Paternoster in their everyday schooling, but particularly in implementing an afternoon programme where the children could learn, in a concentrated and dedicated way, to enjoy learning, reading, sports and games. Lesson plans, curricula and projects were planned together with the university.

The first students were invited to interviews and carefully selected. Interest was very high, as we were not only offering the chance to live and work for several months in one of the most beautiful countries in the world, but we also paid for the flights, organised orientation programmes and provided free accommodation. We were therefore able to select the best of the best students to send to Paternoster.

Just 10 months later, in October 2016, the first volunteers – in their striking orange T-shirts and windcheaters – moved into their accommodation in Paternoster. Now, 15 months later, several further promising developments can be noted:

1The original four volunteers have increased to eight, and more may be included in the future.

2Besides the University of Education/Weingarten, we now also have the Federal University

of Baden-Württemberg and the University of Heidelberg on board – and, from summer 2018, students from the University of Stellenbosch will also help to develop the programme.

3 A boarding house for the students’ accommodation, together with a gathering area

for meetings, is under construction in Paternoster, and should be completed in August 2018.

4The first Paternoster Conference, with academics and project partners from South

Africa and Germany, took place in October 2017 in Paternoster. Together, a programme was developed to pave the way for the continuation of the project. The conference is to be held annually, so that success can be measured according to the goals that were set the previous year.

5Prestigious delegations have visited Paternoster, including the Baden-Württemberg Minister for

Science, Research and the Arts, with a delegation of 22 university academics and office bearers.

6 German media reported on these visits and Paternoster thus achieved international public

awareness.

7The first Paternoster Project Newsletter was published in December 2017. This is now

scheduled for every three months, both in print and digital format, and in English and Afrikaans.

Something for everyone after school

The St Augustine’s Afternoon Programme is in full swing, ensuring that children have time for both work and fun. There is time set aside for homework (50 minutes),

followed by lunch in the cafeteria and various workshops.

Right after school, the grade 3 to 7 children who are part of the programme meet with their assigned German volunteer and local volunteers, who help them with their homework. After a hearty lunch, the children head off to attend different workshops – whatever they are interested in. Crafts, soccer, rope skipping, music, acting, board games and dancing are all options. There’s also a newspaper workshop, where children write articles that get published in their own newspaper, Pato Times, which is distributed by the kids to different shops.

Every workshop aims to provide something tangible for the kids to showcase after three months, when the volunteers leave and a new set of volunteers takes over. Hence, the workshops offered can change slightly with the new intake of volunteers every quarter. Ultimately, the workshops aim to equip the kids for real life by providing them with important life skills such as perseverance, creativity, teamwork and fair play. On Tuesdays and Thursdays, local and German volunteers also offer reading and emotional development workshops. PP

A lot has already been achieved, very quickly and efficiently. In the meantime, the Paternoster Project is widely regarded as a reference for exemplary foundation work in Africa.

But why exactly Paternoster, when there are so many – too many – places in Africa in dire need of the support of a foundation?

Successful work by a foundation has a lot to do with the people involved. In the Paternoster Project, these are highly committed, unpretentious people who are all pursuing one goal: to make Paternoster into a showcase project which proves that things can be changed for the better on a small scale, and which can then serve as a model for change on a larger scale.

People are sacrificing a lot of their time, with passion and dedication, for this wonderful idea. These people also get on well and respect each other, can rely on each other and, above all, take pleasure in the success of the project.

Our special thanks go to Jaco van der Westhuizen, the father of the idea, as well as to André Kleynhans, who acts as a diplomatic coordinator between the different interest groups and thus adds momentum to the project. Also, to Nathalie van der Heever, Celestine Barends, Sanita van der Merwe, Janette du Toit, Joan Kruger, Johan de Jager and all the others not mentioned here, who contribute in the background to ensure that the project progresses and that our volunteers feel well looked after and can dedicate themselves fully to their work.

Thanks are also due to Maike Reinhardt, our dynamic project leader, and to Arnold van Zyl, an outstanding diplomat in the background who, as a South African living in Stuttgart, is invaluable for our international project.

In the meantime, the goal of the Paternoster Project, as a non-profit organisation, is to equip the youth of Paternoster for the future and to maintain the local heritage. What delights us most about this project is that we not only do good for the children of Paternoster, but can also give our German students an opportunity to live and work in a foreign culture.

Offering such an opportunity to young people growing up in a rapidly changing society is absolutely priceless – and hopefully a valuable help for Paternoster.

Paternoster’s children may soon be talking German to tourists visiting the village.

Two education students from the University of Education/Weingarten in Germany, Michaela Zeutzheim and Jennifer Tribelhorn, will be teaching German to primary school children in the afternoons. German as a foreign language is one of Michaela and Jennifer’s main subjects at university, which makes them ideally suited to teach the children. Lessons will be offered twice weekly to 12 children in grades 6 and 7. If this pilot project is successful, another study group for younger children could also be arranged.

According to hoteliers in Paternoster, finding employment in the tourism industry will be easier if applicants can speak a foreign language, such as German. Holiday employment at tourist-related establishments may then also be an option for German-speaking locals. PP

It’s an absolute honour and privilege to be part of this amazing school feeding programme, and all the good deeds that are happening in the Paternoster Project.

My name is Astrid Coraizin, and I was born and raised in Paternoster. As a resident of the village, I feel so blessed to be part of this after-school feeding programme for the first six months of 2018. I am currently a third-year student studying Business and Information Administration at Cape Peninsula University of Technology (CPUT) Wellington Campus and I am doing my experiential training at Paternoster Fishery, which is one of the food sponsors for the programme. I am in charge of this great programme.

We serve only the best and the tastiest food to the children, and I prepare the food myself with help from a local volunteer, Fredeline Engelbrecht. PP

The foundations for Volunteer House have been thrown. On 2 February, four trucks of ready-mix concrete

were on site to pour the foundations of the building. A total of 120 tons of concrete and five tons of steel rebar are in the house’s foundations, which are on granite rock and dune sand. Then the low foundation walls were built and the floor poured before the construction of the walls, which took about a week. The roof of this cellar section is also part of the floor of the first storey of the house, with a second storey to follow.

“By mid-May, I anticipate we will be close to the third floor – possibly pouring that floor,” says André Kleynhans of Anker Bouers. “We are building in-situ decks, which are more expensive, but this will save a huge amount of time – as much as two months. Since so many miracles have happened with this house, we may even be finished by the end of July. It’s a difficult house to build, but if it wasn’t a challenge I wouldn’t want to build it anyway. People have been so patient with us, with the noise and sand from the site – it has been an amazing surprise.”

André says that at times, up to 60% of the building team is from Paternoster. “Local people are coming to ask for jobs, to be a part of it. Some say the work is like going to gym, and they are really working hard. In fact, some people I have never seen working before are now working on this building site.”

André adds that the building of Volunteer House has strong community support, too. “One of the older fishermen told me that before heading out to sea, fishermen gather on the building site to pray, and women have also been seen holding hands and praying on the site that this will be the start of positive change in Paternoster. They say the wording on the board promises so much, and they have seen previous promises by the Germans being kept, so they have hope for the future again.” PP

Christmas came early for 43 children from Paternoster’s Educare Crèche. On 7 December last year, the children were

treated to an outing they will never forget – over two hours of extreme fun at Play Time in Vredenburg.

Initiated and organised by Paternoster resident Christine Coetzee, the outing for children and teachers was a hit. A bus collected them in Paternoster and transported them to Play Time, opposite the West Coast Mall.

Christine, who has two young children of her own, says she just wanted to do something fun for the children, and she arranged the outing and sponsors in just four days. She baked Christmas tree cupcakes and put together party packs for the children, who were all aged between one and five years.

“I felt my kids were privileged as they had been to Play Time before, and I wanted the crèche children to have this fun experience too. It was important that the outing had meaning, so I only approached friends and family to contribute towards costs, and they gladly helped.” So much so, that the children enjoyed two hours of play, instead of the one hour planned.

“It was an amazing experience,” smiles Christine, “and the children just played and played. They didn’t even want to stop to eat cake. I am already planning something better for this year.” Christine says she wants to do more with the crèche children during 2018.

“I think I got more from the outing than the kids did,” adds Christine. “I just loved it. Helping kids is what I would like to do more of.” PP

Amanda says that developing emotionally includes competencies such as self-awareness and the ability to observe and appreciate oneself in relationship with others. “It means I must be able to label what I feel, be able to take a step back, understand why I feel it, and to then take a deep breath before I decide what to do about it. I am sure most adults will agree this is a difficult discipline. The good news is that it is also a learnt behaviour.”

She says that because we are feeling beings, we need to learn to understand what we feel and how to respond to what we feel. Those who watch the sitcom series Big Bang Theory will have seen how difficult it can be for an intellectual genius to be able to behave appropriately towards others, by reading their own and other’s emotions and responding in an appropriate manner.

“We are looking forward to 2018, and have identified customised emotional development themes that we want to play with, to support the holistic development of the children,” says Amanda. “We have agreed to review our progress weekly, adapting to make sure that what we do is absolutely relevant at any given time. Our most important objective is that the children and teachers feel cared for, and we hope that children and teachers alike will experience support in the endeavour to grow pupils ready for secondary school.” PP

The development of emotional intelligence is believed to be a key area of growth for both children and adults.

It is often said to form part of the foundation of successful people.

In November 2017, an Emotional Development programme was launched at St Augustine’s Primary School. Amanda Roon, along with the German volunteers and Paternoster volunteers Joan Kruger, Cheryl de la Porte, Fran Hepburn, Ester Schoeman and Christine Coetzee, introduced the concept to the children with a fun exercise of making their wishes known. The children worked in groups to imagine what it would feel like if their dreams came true, and how would feel if they didn’t. The resource material was generously provided by www.6Seconds.org and the exercise encouraged the children to have a long-term view to aspire to, as well as to practise labelling their emotions.

Emotional intelligence encourages success

With guidance from German and local volunteers, children learn the importance of emotional intelligence, how to identify what they feel and to respond to these feelings appropriately.

Our most important objective is that the children and the teachers feel cared for.”“

What will the dentists be focusing on?They will repair teeth and educate the children on how to avoid getting cavities. We see huge successes in the children’s dental health, and I encourage parents to make use of this free opportunity for their children. Parents can come and see for themselves how their children are treated. Healthy teeth are part of a bright future. Without healthy teeth, you can’t find a job easily – and certainly not in tourism.

Are there opportunities for Paternoster youth to shadow at Strandloper and learn about hospitality?I think tourism is the future for Paternoster, so if anyone is interested, they can contact our human resources department, with a letter explaining who they are and what they are interested in – and we will do our best to make a plan for them. We can also organise tours for older children who are thinking about their careers. We can take them on a tour through all the departments, and show them how a hotel operation works.

Do you consider employing local people first at Strandloper?A very strong yes. I believe that sustainable jobs are more important than helping with handouts. Having a job changes everything, because people with a secure income can help themselves and their children, and it brings order to life. We employ 54 staff in Paternoster, of whom 26 are from Paternoster, 17 are South African and 11 are international. I will always employ a local person first. It is so great to see how some people start knowing little, and they become stars.

...continued on p.10

Simone is co-owner of Strandloper Ocean Boutique Hotel and co-founder of West

Coast Kids charity.

When and why did the dental programme start for Paternoster’s children? We started in 2010, because my husband and I strongly believe in helping our immediate community, no matter where we live. I was concerned about the dental health of

Paternoster’s children. For me, the pulling of front teeth is a disturbing custom, as is the approach to pull teeth rather than to save them. In general, Paternoster children have healthy teeth. With our team, we wanted to show children how to keep their teeth healthy and to repair teeth rather than to pull them.

What can be done to educate parents on sending healthy snacks to school, not sweets and soft drinks? We are discussing an awareness programme around healthy nutrition. The dentists also do their best to talk to children about eating healthy food, because you are what you eat. We want to involve the parents in nutrition education, because there are so many healthy and affordable snack options for kids. I have approached a nutritionist, who is willing to come to Paternoster and give a talk and practical presentation on how parents can prepare healthy snacks for their children – for example, putting peanut butter on apple slices. My wish would be to ban chips and sweets and soft drinks from school, and then the packets and bottles also wouldn’t pollute the streets or threaten marine life. There is a worldwide movement away from sugar, because it is bad for health and it affects children’s behaviour and their capacity for learning at school.

You initiated the dental healthcare programme in Paternoster. Are you considering extending the programme to attend to eyesight and hearing problems?Health is crucial. You can have the most amazing teacher and education programmes, but if you are not healthy you can’t benefit fully from this. Looking after your health is also about self-care and self-respect. Last year, we initiated an eye health project in conjunction with the Yonga Trust, a South African NGO. Children with very poor eyesight were identified and now wear stylish Benetton glasses. It is also a good idea to test children’s hearing – and I hope, with the support of the community, that we can initiate this.

When will the dentists be back in Paternoster? We haven’t set a date yet as this requires a lot of planning, but hopefully at the end of 2018 or early in 2019. It will be great for the parents to be more involved – maybe by organising a traditional fish braai to thank the dentists for all their help and to connect with the volunteer team, and also to build up a relationship of trust.

Would you consider showcasing local crafts at the shop in Strandloper?Definitely, as long as they meet the standards required by well-travelled guests. I would also like to encourage the teaching of crafts to the younger generation in Paternoster, and I have already been in contact with a lady who can teach leather craft.

What do you have in mind for the future for Paternoster’s children and the village in general? We will continue with our charitable work, such as the health programmes for the children, and will hopefully stay involved with their education and be able to continue with the sponsorship of a teacher at St Augustine’s School. I am extremely excited about all the other parties involved in helping the people of Paternoster and believe that together we can change the future of our children. I think a dynamic has started that will lead Paternoster and its people to a bright future. At the same time, we will focus further on job creation through the development of tourism. I really believe that tourism is the key to develop Paternoster, and this can influence the circumstances of the local community in a very positive way.

I am excited and hopeful and thankful for all the contributions from so many people. As Nelson Mandela said: “It always seems impossible until it’s done.” PP

So is die Paternoster Project gebore.

vergaderings, in Paternoster gebou.

5Invloedryke afgevaardigdes het intussen besoek afgelê by Paternoster; insluitend

internasionale publieke bewustheid bereik.

7Die eerste Paternoster Project-nuusbrief is in Desember 2017 gepubliseer.

CHRISTIAN NEUBER,

PATERNOSTER PROJECT NPC STIGTER

Project verantwoordelik is.

PP

Duitse lesse skop af by die St Augustine’s Primêre Skool

“Ek was mal daaroor. Ek wil meer gereeld kinders help.” PP

In November 2017 is ’n emosionele-ontwikkelingsprogram by Sy Augustine's Primêre Skool van stapel gestuur.

Emosionele intelligensie kweek sukses

Ek was

Simone Jacke

’n Onderhoud met Simone Jacke

“ O N S W O U D I E K I N D E R S L E E R H O E O M H U L L E T A N D E G E S O N D T E H O U E N H U L L E T A N D E H E R S T E L E E R D E R A S O M D I T T E T R E K . ”

Oorweeg julle eerder plaaslike mense vir poste by Strandloper? Absoluut. Ek sal altyd eerste ’n plaaslike mens in diens neem.

PP
