We have been part of the University’s main campus in Melbourne since 1974, and we are proud to have one of the most diverse international student populations in Australia.

The college is located at the picturesque La Trobe University Melbourne Campus and offers a supportive learning environment with small class sizes designed to enhance the success rate of our students.

Melbourne Campus

Located just 14km from Melbourne’s city centre, the University’s Melbourne Campus is its largest. It covers 267 hectares of stunning parkland and waterways and includes all the amenities you’d expect to find in the city. 

You will find lots of cafés, restaurants, shops, banks, a hairdresser, post office, student accommodation and the University’s largest library. The campus even has its own art museum, cinema and markets. 

La Trobe’s Melbourne campus is very well served by public transport – numerous buses run to the campus from various parts of Melbourne; the number 86 tram runs frequently from the city, and trains on the Epping and Hurstbridge lines stop at stations near the campus.

If you have a goal to achieve an internationally recognised bachelor degree, the La Trobe Melbourne pathway to La Trobe University ensures that you will receive extensive academic and personal support to help you succeed.

The subjects you will study are equivalent to first year of a bachelor degree at La Trobe University. Once you have successfully completed the diploma and met all requirements, you will move into second year of a degree of your choice.

Benefits of our pathwayLa Trobe Melbourne is located near the centre of the campus overlooking natural surrounds. 

• Campuslife: you will have a true university experience, with access to La Trobe University facilities.

•  Three-trimestersystem: we offer three intakes each year, in February, June and October. This means you can begin your studies at a time that is convenient for you, especially if you are considering fast-tracking your course. 

•  Personalisedattention: our class sizes are smaller than at university. This means you will receive a high level of individual attention from your lecturers and tutors.

•  High-qualityuniversitycurriculum: our diploma programs are quality assured by La Trobe University and are equivalent to the first year of a university degree program, but with increased academic contact. Our students generally perform better than other students in their degree at the university.

•  Progressiontouniversity: after successfully completing the diploma program at La Trobe Melbourne, you will be offered a place in a corresponding bachelor degree program at La Trobe University. Additional course requirements may apply. 

How will I learn?You will study eight subjects in your chosen diploma, which includes four hours of class contact per subject each week. The standard duration for a diploma is three trimesters (12 months). Students enrol in three subjects in the first trimester, three in the second trimester and two in the third trimester. 

It is also possible to fast-track your studies to complete the diploma in two trimesters (8 months) by studying four subjects in each of the first two trimesters.

Each trimester includes 12 weeks of teaching and final exams. Assessment for all subjects includes tests, assignments and case study analysis. 

Our coursesIf you successfully complete a diploma program and meet other additional entry requirements, you will receive credit equivalent to the first year of a corresponding degree at La Trobe University. You will then be eligible for direct entry to the second year of that degree. Select from the following areas of study:

Progression to La Trobe UniversityTo be eligible to enter the second year of your degree, you must receive at least a pass (50 percent) in each subject, or higher if otherwise stated. Some courses have strict quotas and higher weighted average mark requirements.

Your student life on campus

There is a lot more to university than just going to classes. You will have access to a comprehensive range of services and facilities to ensure that you receive the best possible learning experience, in and out of the classroom.

OrientationDuring orientation you will finalise your enrolment and receive important information about your program, meet La Trobe Melbourne staff and students, be introduced to the range of available services and facilities, and attend information sessions. There will also be a chance to join one of the many clubs and societies on campus and find out about other social activities available to students.

FacilitiesAs a La Trobe Melbourne student you will also have access to the computer laboratories, wireless connectivity across the college and campus. Our students also have access to La Trobe University’s broad range of campus facilities, including the sports centre and library.

Independent Learning CentreThe Independent Learning Centre located in the Sylvia Walton Building (ILC) offers a wide range of learning resources for all levels and interests. Students can access a variety of resources online and from the shelf to support their learning. Resources include text and reference books, reading books, DVDs and online materials.

Diploma of Bioscience

If you are interested in living organisms and how they function, this diploma offers an alternative pathway to a science degree at La Trobe University. It provides an introduction to university studies in the field of science. You will learn about living organisms, focus on the structure, functions, interactions and other aspects of organisms in relation to biology, physiology and ecology.

Diploma of Engineering

Our Diploma of Engineering will introduce you to a range of subjects leading to second year of the engineering degrees offered at La Trobe University. The course is practical, hands-on and all of La Trobe University’s engineering degrees are accredited by Engineers Australia and include work placement in a range of fields.

Depending on your chosen degree you will develop skills in a number of core areas like biomedical engineering, communication engineering, electronic and electrical systems, sustainability in energy production, automotive engineering, the application of technology in modern medicine, project management of large-scale projects, sustainable infrastructure, water resources, civil construction, surveying and computer-aided design.

FEE-Help (Australian Government Loan Scheme)La Trobe Melbourne as a recognised Higher Education Provider (HEP) allows eligible students (Australian citizens) the opportunity to access the FEE-Help loan scheme. Australian citizens will move onto a Commonwealth Supported Place when they progress to La Trobe University, and be eligible for HECS. FEE-Help and HECS - Help are paid back as taxation after graduation when you have reached a minimum earning threshold. Students incur a FEE-Help debt immediately after the census date for each subject of study for which they have received FEE-Help assistance. The census date falls at the end of the 4th week of each semester. You can find out more at the government website: studyassist.gov.au

Year 12 students

La Trobe Melbourne courses are listed in VTAC. You will need to add one of our diploma programs to your list of VTAC preferences to ensure that you get an offer. If you do not get an offer for direct entry to La Trobe University at First or Second Round in VTAC — but you meet the La Trobe Melbourne entry criteria — you are guaranteed to receive an offer for one of the diploma courses.

Navitas bursaries and scholarships

Navitas family bursariesNavitas offers financial support in the form of family bursaries. A bursary applies where two or more students from the same family study with a Navitas member institution.*

The bursary is equivalent to 10 percent of the tuition fee of your program of study.

Navitas academic merit scholarships

Navitas is committed to helping you achieve your career goals by offering scholarships to outstanding students. Each term, Navitas colleges* award two students with academic merit scholarships. The scholarship is for 

diploma students only, who are studying full-time and in their first trimester. There is no need to apply for the scholarship. The scholarship winners are selected based on academic performance. If more than two students are eligible, other considerations may be taken into account.
