Bonner County EMS System Procedures Trauma: trauma Tourniquet- 9064 TRAUMA TOURNIQUET Clinical Indications and Contraindications Life threatening extremity hemorrhage that cannot be controlled by other means. Serious or life threatening hemorrhage and tactical considerations prevent the use of standard hemorrhage control techniques. Trauma tourniquets are contraindicated for: non-extremity hemorrhage and proximal extremity location where tourniquet application is not practical. PROCEDURE GUIDELINES R- EMR E – EMT BASIC A-EMTA P-PARAMEDIC **M-Medical Control ** ***Higher level providers are responsible for lower level treatments*** Place tourniquet proximal to wound. Tighten per manufacturer instructions until hemorrhage stops and/or distal pulses in affected extremity disappear. Secure tourniquet per manufacturer instructions. Note time of tourniquet application and communicate this to receiving care providers. Dress wounds per standard wound care protocol. If delayed or prolonged transport and tourniquet application time is > 45 minutes, consider reattempting standard hemorrhage control techniques and removing tourniquet.
