A Message from ASB Leadership With the start of a new year, comes the start of a new school semester. Our ASB Leadership has had a very successful beginning of the year. Students volunteering at the event were waiters/waitresses, hosts/hostesses, as well as helped out with other miscellaneous tasks. Students also volunteered at Beyer’s annual Open House on February 23rd. In the future, the Freshmen and Sophomore classes are bringing back the Sadie’s Dance which will be held on March 10th at Beyer. Other future events include: ASB Elections (March 13th-17th), Beyer Talent Show (April 6th), Prom Fair (April 13th), Boys Volleyball Game (April 21st), Blood Drive (April 27th), Renaissance Day on the Green (April 28th), Prom at Gallo (May 6th), Senior Sunset (May 12th), Senior Trip (May 18th & 19th), Senior Brunch (May 23rd), and the Class of 2017 Graduation (May 24th). FFA Beyer FFA has had a busy Spring Semester. Beyer FFA held our annual drive thru dinner Thursday, February 2th 2017. Beyer FFA has put on a BBQ fundraiser for over 20 years and this year’s event turned out to be a great success serving a record number of people. Many hours of hard work throughout the Ag department was spent in preparation for the dinner. Our fundraiser is a great success every year due to the enormous participation we receive from the members of our organization and

community members. Students participated from selling tickets; selling ad’s, helping serve the dinner, and directing the drive thru traffic. Our FFA chapter only does one fundraiser a year in which we try to outdo ourselves year after year. With serving such large number of people the amount of food needed can be shocking. We served approximately 150 pounds of salad, 1050 rolls, 850 pounds of Pork Loin, and 87 gallons of chili beans. A special Thanks to all our Sponsors for their support towards the FFA. Please extend your gratitude to these generous donors. The FFA had four State Farmer Degree recipients. Claire Bardsley, AJ Salinas, Jared Thatcher and Hanna Strickland. Traditionally less than 5% of all FFA members qualify to receive this degree. The FFA Advisors are very proud of their accomplishments. Alex Coronado represented Beyer at the Regional Job Interview competition in Lodi, placing top 10 in our region. Alex was the 1st place winner of the Sectional competition held in December at Enoch’s High School. Congratulations Alex. The Ag Science classes have been busy with the new chicken coop and laying hens now in production. With spring on the horizon, the class will soon be harvesting the winter crop forage and preparing the ground for the summer vegetable crop.

FFA Modesto City Schools has been working hard to provide assistance to teachers wanting to increase knowledge about their subject through Professional Development. Two weeks ago, Beyer High School’s Maddi Kerlee, attended a three day course to help expand her knowledge in the area of animal reproduction and genetic selection. Mrs. Kerlee has been an Ag Teacher at Beyer High School for the past eight years. She was very excited to have the opportunity to attend the All West Select Sires Artificial Insemination class held in Oakdale, CA. Topics that were covered related to: anatomy and physiology in cattle, semen handling, equation of reproduction, heat detection and hands on cow reproductive tracts and live cow breeding. Beyer High School has a very strong Agriculture program and continues to utilize these educational opportunities to continue producing well educated students. The Advanced Animal Science course that she teaches is an excellent science class for juniors or seniors. This training will assist her in bringing the most modern information and techniques to her classes.

Academic Decathlon Academic Decathlon wins 5th Club title in a row, headed by coaches Scott Bradley and Malcolm Fredeking, the team continues to improve year after year. • 26 medals were won, 1 up from last year. Academic Decathlon is composed of 10 events all centered around a single topic. This year the topic was World War II. Special mention to Pratima Gangupantula, Vinny Benenati. Jenna Stanislaw, Andrea Samano, Ashton Tuturow, Isaac walters, Jorge Gomez Ortega, Nina Garma and Ashley Garelick (the starting team) on a fantastic showing. Congrats to the entire team for a fantastic display of Beyer pride. Thank you to the parents for all their effort.

Positive Behavior Intervention and Support Program (PBIS)

This year Beyer High School has implemented a new Positive Behavior Intervention and Support Program (PBIS) that is designed to provide students with incentives for demonstrating positive behavior at school. The underlying theme of the PBIS program is to teach students behavioral expectations in the same manner as any core curriculum subject. The school focuses on four behavioral expectations that are positively stated and easy to remember. In other words, rather than telling students what not to do, the school will focus on the preferred behaviors which all students should demonstrate toward staff, faculty, and other students. The expectations set forth in the Beyer High School PBIS program are that students will:1. Be Safe!2. Be Responsible!3. Be Respectful!4. Be Successful! The goal of the program is to ensure a positive school culture while stressing the behavioral and academic expectations at school for all students to follow. Students are recognized in class and around campus when they demonstrate these positive behaviors and rewarded with a Beyer PRIDE! Card, which are used to enter weekly drawings to receive a $5 gift card to local restaurants. These cards are then mailed home as a notification to the parents or guardians that their students have been recognized for their positive behavior at school. Since the return from winter break, Beyer staff has recognized over 50 students with the implementation of our PBIS program. Several students and parents have voiced their appreciation for acknowledging students while acting in a positive and mature way at school.
