C'EST LA VIE ... Continued from page 1

Beginning with a hull constructed on a permanent steel jig to ensure absolute accuracy, C'EST LA VIE was handcrafted from the keel up in the legendary wooden boat building tradition of the famous Stuart, Florida, boat builders – known worldwide for producing lightweight, cold-molded custom sportfishing yachts unsurpassed in strength, speed and comfort.

In order to house a pair of massive MTU Series 4000 engines, typically found in much larger vessels, a special aluminum engine bed was fitted over the keel, stringers and chine, running the length of the engine room. To accommodate the increased engine output, a custom exhaust system was devised by Marine Exhaust Systems. The C'EST LA VIE power package incorporates V-drive propulsion with a reduced shaft angle, allowing the boat to push through the water more efficiently and back down quickly on fish without dropping the stern. The boat is also equipped with independent rudder control, allowing for greater maneuverability.

Designed for extended open-ocean travel, the vessel layout features six staterooms and five heads to accommodate extra crew and guests. A unique, rear-facing galley with elegant backlit quartz countertops overlooks the cockpit, allowing the crew to stay on top of the action while preparing meals and snacks.

Combining comfort and practicality, C'EST LA VIE features an expansive teak mezzanine with a drop-down TV and overhead light boxes that pull down to reveal air conditioning vents to keep guests cool on the water. The mezzanine also incorporates a pop-up stainless steel grill and a couch that cleverly doubles as bait freezer.

A sophisticated navigation and audio-video system was installed by IMS American, providing total automation of all components throughout the vessel, linked remotely by iPad control via a Savant automated control system. An integrated video system allows for around-the-clock monitoring of the engine and pump rooms, as well as underwater cameras. A soaring custom tower was provided by Bausch-American Towers. The final touches were performed by American Canvas and Interiors, who provided beautiful interior upholstery, canvas and cushions and a custom bridge enclosure.

Some call it the perfect boat. We say "perfect" isn't good enough.

Completing another chapter in its long history with American Custom Yachts (ACY), the 101' Palmer Johnson EXCEL returned to ACY for its third major refit in 14 years. First highlighted in Volume 11 of American Patriot Press, EXCEL visited the yard in 1999 for a custom 11' transom extension. The vessel was renamed MOON RIVER in 2003 and returned in 2009 for a total repower, extensive interior modifications, an electronics upgrade and a full paint job.

This year, the boat returned again under new ownership to undergo significant interior and exterior modifications under the direction of the vessel's long-time project manager Eddie Smith. To create additional leisure space, ACY converted the salon dining area into a day cabin outfitted with a built-in couch, bookcase, a new desk and television. The pantry was eliminated, and the refrigerator was relocated to create more room in the galley. A new dining area was established forward of the galley, replacing the old library, and new carpet was installed in the day cabin and salon. Interior furnishings were reupholstered by American Canvas and Interiors (ACI) who also installed a new headliner on the upper deck. Exterior modifications included the fabrication of new top deck seating areas, new handrails with seat cushions and rail covers provided by ACI. The barbecue was relocated to accommodate the new deck layout. The final touch was restoring the vessel's original name EXCEL with new transom lettering. It was good to have her home again.

The marine paint boat owners have trusted for years just got better. Awlgrip recently launched a new converter and reducers range for their premium Awlcraft 2000 topcoat system resulting in a safer, low-VOC (volatile organic compound), two-coat system when used with any of the Awlcraft 2000 bases. Industry-leading Awlcraft 2000 is a fast-drying, acrylic urethane topcoat for an easy-to-apply, high-gloss finish. Awlcraft 2000 Metallics is a high-gloss topcoat used to create a special metallic effect finish.

Featuring the latest in solvent technology, the new Awlcraft 2000 features a converter and three reducers that comply with all current federal and state legislation for high-gloss topcoats. Ensuring compliance with all current VOC laws, North American boatyards and applicators can now enjoy the benefits of the world-renowned Awlcraft 2000 regardless of VOC legislation.

Following extensive tests and trials, VOC-compliant Awlcraft 2000 offers the same great performance as the original easy-to-apply formula – it's still fast drying and repairable with flow and gloss second to none. As with the original, the VOC-compliant Awlcraft 2000 system includes a spray converter and three reducers for use at various temperatures, giving applicators the flexibility to add as much solvent as necessary. When the recently-restored 1937 Purdy commuter boat APHRODITE was relocated to its new winter home in Palm Beach, American Custom Yachts (ACY) was asked to perform the finishing touches with a full repaint, varnish and new gold-leaf name application. This was quite an honor, considering the boat's illustrious history.

APHRODITE was built by the Purdy Boat Company and launched in May of 1937 for Wall Street financier, John Hay "Jock" Whitney, who became the executive producer of one of Hollywood's most memorable movies – Gone with the Wind. The 74' commuter boat would transport Whitney daily from his home on Long Island, westward down Long Island Sound and along the East River to his Wall Street office. The original power package consisted of two massive Packard V12 engines adapted from aviation use, producing over 1,500 horsepower. APHRODITE was a common sight racing up and down the river at 38 knots.

APHRODITE'S guests over the years read like a "Who's Who" in the world of government, business and entertainment with such luminaries as Fred Astaire, Sir Laurence Olivier, Spencer Tracy, Katherine Hepburn, Henry Ford II and Nelson Rockefeller joining Whitney for summer jaunts down Long Island Sound. APHRODITE even served as the

venue for the ninth birthday party for popular child actor of the day, Shirley Temple.

In 1942, the day after the attack on Pearl Harbor, Whitney offered APHRODITE to the U.S. government for war service, and the vessel was commissioned as a Coast Guard auxiliary vessel used to transport President Franklin Roosevelt. She was repowered with twin 1,750-hp Packard engines which were amped up by the Coast Guard to 2,000 hp, pushing APHRODITE to a cruising speed of 54 mph with a top speed of 60 mph!

The years passed, and the boat eventually fell into disrepair. In 2000 the boat was discovered by Captain Kirk Reynolds and his employer who persuaded the owner to sell. Reynolds patched up the soggy hull and miraculously navigated APHRODITE to Maine's Brooklin Boat Yard where she was fully restored under Reynolds' supervision.

Of American's work on the vessel, APHRODITE's Reynolds said, "ACY was very competitive and their paint shed is one of the best I've seen. Their quality is fantastic. They did a wonderful paint and varnish job, and, as anybody might know about APHRODITE, she has acres of varnish. The varnish and paint are the best she's ever had."

When it comes to proper bottom preparation prior to repainting, American Custom Yachts (ACY) customers rely on the coating removal specialists at Eco Strip. Employing a unique, low-pressure stripping method that utilizes hot water and volcanic pumice applied through a finely-tuned nozzle, Eco Strip is capable of completely removing surface coatings on any size vessel, right down to the bare hull.

This system is safe on all hull surfaces, including fiberglass, aluminum and steel, as well as running gear and wood parts, leaving surfaces ready for proper paint application.

Dedicated to protecting the environment, Eco Strip erects a full enclosure with a filtration system around every boat to collect as much debris as possible. When the job is complete, the enclosure is removed and any remaining debris is properly disposed with an industrial vacuum. After cleanup, Eco Strip thoroughly washes the boat's sides and bottom, leaving the boat ready to paint.

The condition of your hull affects the fuel economy, safety and structural integrity of your vessel. It is very important to keep your hull free of marine

growth and bottom paint build-up. With fuel prices continuing to rise, now is an excellent time to remove the extra weight of multiple coats of bottom paint and running gear build-up.

Eco Strip is a simple, practical solution to increase your vessel's performance and fuel economy. To learn more, go to www.ecostripusa.com or contact ACY at 772-221-9100.

Long recognized as the leader in fish finder technology, Furuno is building upon that reputation by introducing their first CHIRP-enabled fish finder – the DFF1-UHD. Featuring Furuno's new

TruEcho CHIRP professional-grade broadband fish finding technology, the DFF1-UHD is designed to operate across a range of 90 frequencies (50 kHz +/- 20 kHz, 200 kHz +/- 25

kHz) within each transmission via a high-powered CHIRP transducer. The DFF1-UHD can achieve an equivalent sound energy transmission through water that is up to 1,000 times greater than a conventional fish finder. This increased energy directed on targets provides better signal clarity, resolution, target

definition and depth capability than any standard comparably-powered fish finder. This helps differentiate between game fish and bait fish, even when they are tightly schooled or near the seafloor.

The DFF1-UHD offers two other important new features: Bottom Discrimination and Accu-Fish. Bottom Discrimination provides detailed information about the make-up of the bottom. It classifies the bottom as one of four types – rock, sand, gravel or mud – and displays an icon or symbol for that bottom type. Knowing the make-up of the bottom provides you with valuable information that helps you locate rich fishing grounds, potential hazards and even good anchoring spots. Accu-Fish is a revolutionary new function that tells you the approximate size of the fish below your boat. Fish symbols are displayed, along with the size of the fish and the depth where they can be found. It detects fish size from 4" up to around 6' in length and covers depths of 7' to well over 300'.

The DFF1-UHD connects directly to any NavNet 3D and TZtouch multi-function display, or it can be connected to a NavNet-supported Ethernet network. Experience the depths like never before with the Furuno

DFF1-UHD. For more information, go to www.furunousa.com or contact IMS American at 772-219-4160.

Work is complete on the 71' motoryacht NIKITA, built in New Zealand by Diverse Products. The vessel has departed on a Dockwise transport ship to Europe where it will travel to various destinations along the Mediterranean Sea, then north through the British Isles, with an ultimate goal to travel back across the Atlantic to Alaska.

In preparation for its voyage, American Custom Yachts (ACY) performed an extensive refit on the vessel under the supervision of

project manager Eddie Smith. The refit entailed fabricating a 3' transom extension that incorporates a stern thruster along with watertight Freeman hatches to access the steering system. The extension created a 110-square-foot swim platform outfitted with a removable boarding ladder. Additional work included installing new hull scoops to redirect water flow, converting all of the interior lighting to LED, adding an antibacterial filter to the water system, modifying the inverter system to European power, installing new salon carpet, and performing a complete topside paint and cap rail varnish. American Canvas and Interiors gave the salon and pilothouse a makeover with newly upholstered cushions and pillows. To accommodate the vessel's ambitious long-range itinerary, IMS American installed a cutting-edge navigation system with redundant components. The pilothouse station features a Furuno NavNet 3D BlackBox multi-function display (MFD) and 12 kW UHD digital radar with a 4' open-array antenna, along with a 15.5" Garmin GPSMAP 7215 chartplotter. A Furuno NavNet 3D MFD was also installed in the flybridge, along with an 8" Garmin GPSMAP 6208 chartplotter.

This challenging project took several months to complete and involved close coordination between ACY's service department and affiliated companies. The end result is a truly unique vessel fully modified to meet the needs of overseas travel.

These incredible photos were sent by the globetrotting team of Terry and Bonnie Stansel aboard the 80' PATRIOT. They were midway through a two-year jaunt through the South Pacific where the fishing has proven to be nothing short of amazing.

Postcards from Paradise

Benjamin Moll, a mate on the Edison Chouest Offshore 240' offshore supply vessel ALLIE CHOUEST, was on deck between shifts working in the Gulf of Mexico when he spotted an impressive-looking sportfisherman with a pale yellow hull landing tuna near an oil rig. Having spent plenty of time at Brewer Plymouth Marine in Plymouth, Massachusetts, run by his father Tim Moll, Benjamin instantly recognized the boat as belonging to the American Custom Yachts fleet. He grabbed his camera and captured this fascinating image of the ACY72 YELLOWBIRD with a flaring rig in the background. A productive day for all, YELLOWBIRD Captain Cameron McDowell reported capturing some nice yellowfin that day. To view more of Moll's work and insightful blog about the life on the water, go to newenglandwaterman.com.

Providing vessel owners with a whole new level of comfort and safety on the water, Seakeeper is the world leader in active gyro stabilizer technology for the marine industry. Founded in 2007, Seakeeper has revolutionized the way people boat. Simply put, they build devices that prevent vessels from rolling. It's hard to imagine how a spinning wheel inside a beach ball-size orb can do that, but the basics are this: A flywheel inside a gyroscope spins at extremely high speeds within a vacuum chamber, generating many tons of force. When installed in a boat hull, that force essentially holds a vessel in place. This can mean the difference between rocking in 4' seas or feeling like it is flat calm.

With several models available accommodating vessels from 35' to 215', Seakeeper gyros are completely internal and require very low power – ideal for any refit project. Seakeeper's global installation network is familiar with all boat types and layouts, ensuring a correct fit based on boat size and displacement.

The U.S. Navy has installed Seakeeper gyros on a number of its vessels, including its 110' torpedo recovery ships. For the navy, it's a no brainer – a comfortable crew is a safe and productive crew.

Winner of the 2011 American Superyacht Forum Technology Innovation Award, today, Seakeeper installations are at an all-time high and continue to gain momentum. American Custom Yachts (ACY) is a certified Seakeeper

installer, providing estimates to anyone interested in stabilizing their yacht. ACY is currently installing Seakeeper gyros on its new 67' custom sportfisherman under construction and refitting an 83' Sea Force IX sportfish with a set of three gyros. Stay tuned for updates on these projects as they progress. For more information about

Seakeeper, go to www.seakeeper.com or contact ACY at 772-221-9100.

The 60' Spencer CAROL LIBBY came to American Custom Yachts (ACY) for a major refit under the guidance of Captain Josh Temple in preparation for a busy charter season in Panama. Exterior modifications included the installation of three tuna

tubes and a tuna door in the transom, a new mezzanine freezer, new Bausch-American Towers rod holders on the bridge, a new windlass and OceanLED underwater lights. ACY also incorporated two custom rod storage boxes into the flybridge hard top and modified the tower box to accommodate a new electronics package by IMS American. Mechanical upgrades included the installation of a Seakeeper gyro stabilizer, along with a new generator and a new engine room sonar tube. Interior improvements included fabricating drawers under the dinette seating for additional storage, installing a new galley cook top, adding Corian rails to all counters, modifying the rod

closet to fit a washer and dryer, and installing new carpet throughout. ACY also modified the salon audio-video cabinet to accommodate a new A/V package by IMS that included new TVs in the salon, staterooms and crew area.

Concluding a mind-blowing season in Panama that capped off with an amazing 68 blue marlin in 3.5 days, CAROL LIBBY ventured to Nova Scotia for the giant bluefin tuna bite. Catch all the action and more at www.primetimeadv.com.

Q: Like many boat owners I talk to, when I open the door to the cabin after being away for a few days, I get blasted with stale, musty holding tank air. We have to run the boat with the salon door open to let in fresh air. Do you have any suggestions on how we can make boarding more pleasant?

A: We posed your question to our good friend Randy Brenner of Classic Marine who specializes in the

installation and service of marine air conditioning systems, as well as refrigeration, sanitation systems and watermakers. He suggested a couple of products that will have your boat smelling sweet in no time.

To improve your vessel's overall air quality, Randy suggests installing a Cruisair Breathe Easy™ air

purifier that can be used alone or in combination with aromatic tea tree gels by Kanberra. The Breathe Easy air

purifier eliminates odors and reduces biological contaminants, combining innovative photocatalytic nano-mesh technology with a special UV light frequency that produces no harmful ozone. The Breathe Easy is available as an in-duct unit that can be installed directly in your air conditioning duct or as a portable unit that can be used in any room in the boat. With the air conditioning on or off, the use of Kanberra gel neutralizes odors, while emitting a fresh, clean scent with its natural, chemical-free blend of Australian tea tree oils. Simply open a container and place it anywhere in the boat.

If the odor persists, Randy suggests it might just be time to change the hoses in your vessel's head system. For more information, visit www.theclassicmarine.com or contact ACY at 772-221-9100.
