Caterina’s chatter
Hello, and welcome. It is very enjoyable writing this, so hoping you
enjoy the read…..
Yes, we are only a week away from Easter and everywhere you look
there are chocolates and hot cross buns in our faces. The shops don’t
care about our health, just our wallet… ha ha. I truly avoid going to
big supermarkets, I stick mainly to the green grocers. To me Easter is
a time of reflecting, forgiveness, and understanding. A time to
contemplate on our life’s journey and how best we can live it in good
faith. It’s also a wonderful time for relaxing with family, so whatever
you are doing, enjoy the day and time spent with your loved ones….
wishing you all a safe and Happy Easter!!!!!
Month of March has seen great bands and musicians alike. Love your
enthusiasm and enjoyment while listening or dancing, also, with the
ambiance of our Jazz club, it is a pleasurable place to be at. Pleasing
to see visitors and new members joining the club every week. Our
jazz in the park is also a hit with the community/public, making it a
remarkable success! This month is no exception. I thank you all the
committee, whom support it, your time and commitment say it
all…………
April rolls in and just after Easter on 3rd April, we will have the
wonderful Kalamunda Youth Swing Band directed by, Jon Fernandez.
Usually he brings two bands and these young ones are very talented.
The night will be a great treat so don’t miss it. Then “Manhattons”…
followed by “Bluenote Jazz Men” and “Cornerhouse J B”, so you see
it is also going to be a fantastic month. Keep the front page of the
newsletter handy for your reference to each week’s gigs. May is also
around the corner and time for our AGM meeting on the 30th. Put that
in your dairy if you would like to be informed on what happens in our/
your club. There are changes required to all club’s constitutions
imposed by the government, and we the committee, with the help
from experienced people, have been working hard to conform. All
going well and time permitting we will be presenting it at our AGM.
More to come in our next issue of Jazznotes so stay tuned……..
This month I have been out and about visiting other jazz venues. An
invitation from James Harwood did take me to Como Bowling club for
the opening of a newly formed jazz club in South Perth “Hoots Jazz”.
It was lovely to see they had a good response from locals and friends
entertained by a quartet of good musicians. It was an enjoyable

evening and I wish them all the very best in this venture. I also
popped into the Railway Hotel, Fremantle, on Saturday where
the Cornerhouse JB was playing; good to see a little revamp….
Then Sunday 17th on to Mandurah with Keith, our treasurer,
meeting up with Mike, our secretary, Beth and Trish to listen to
That’s Jazz. Such a lovely new bright venue and on their 14-
year celebrations we had a very pleasant afternoon. Then con-
tinuing to dinner when Mike was longing for his loved crabs. It
was late, and the crab fest was coming to an end, but we did
not give up. Mike got his huge serve of crabs, the glow on his
face said it all. We let him take his time, ¾ hour to be exact,
hmmmmmm. I note no offers to any of us to taste them was
made!!! Hahahaha, good one Mike…………
Treat yourself with love and respect, and you will attract people
who show you love and respect, focus on the qualities you love
about yourself and the law of attraction will show you more won-
derful things about you….
Warm regards always
Caterina Ranieri

The Original Dixieland Jazz Band started
life in early 1916 in Chicago when a New
Orleans clarinet player, Alcide Nunez
was asked by a local promoter to bring a
New Orleans styled band to Chicago.
Other bands from New Orleans playing in
the Dixieland style were enjoying
success, notably Tom Brown and Johnny
Stein’s bands.. When Stein’s contract
ended, Nunez brought drummer Tony Sparbaro ( Spargo) to replace him.
Also added were pianist Henry Ragas and Tromboneist Eddie Edwards.
Larry Shields took over the clarinet position joining from Tom Brown’s band in
a band swap. The cornet chair was taken over by Dominick La Rocca, a
replacement for Frank Christian, the first choice.
All band members were white and had played with Papa Laine’s band in NO
and all had played alongside the black musicians in that Band. They started
their career in Schiller’s Cafe under the name of Stein’s Jass Band in early
1916 but when Stein left, changed the name to The Original Dixieland Jass
Band.
The band caught the ear of impresario Max Hart , who took the band to New
York, where they enjoyed great success and there into the studios of the
Victor Talking Machine Co, in February 1917 to record the first ever cutting of
a disk in the new style of music.
This was the Livery Stable Blues, and other notable tunes at this session
included were Tiger Rag and the Original Dixie Land Onestep, La Rocca
compositions.
The Band was sent to England in 1917 to entertain the US Forces and
enjoyed a short residency at the London Hippodrome, influencing many of the
local musicians, even playing at a command performance for King George
V11 at the Palace.
Returning to the US, the band toured and recorded for the Columbia label but
broke up during the Depression in 1920. Provided by Herkin
