“Winter Forest Flannel Quilt”

Pattern Designed by Wanda Coley - Old South Fabrics

“Winter Forest Flannel Quilt Kit” is available while supply lasts at http://www.oldsouthfabrics.com/

When I saw Holly Taylor’s “Winter Forest Flannel” fabric collection, I knew my grandsons would love to

snuggle up in this luxurious warm soft cozy flannel by Moda. Holly included a panel in the theme of winter

scenes with big brown bears and deer roaming in the forest filled with trees, pine cones and berries which

instantly caught my eye. I designed a quilt to accent Holly’s beautiful winter scenes. Using “Winter Forest”

Charm Squares makes this a stress free fun quilt you are sure to enjoy.

Quilt Size approx 66" x 82".

PLEASE, READ ALL INSTRUCTIONS BEFORE YOU BEGIN- REGARDLESS OF YOUR EXPERIENCE IN SEWING AND QUILTING

MATERIALS NEEDED:

Total of 87 Charm Squares ( 5” x 5”) or 2 Charm Packs & 3 additional 5” squares

12 Images from 1 ½ Winter Forest Panels by Holly Taylor 3/8 yard - First Border on Image

2/3 yard – Second Border on Image

5/8 yard – Accent Fabric (on 2 sides of the Image)

5/8 yard - Inner Border

1 1/3 yard - Outer Border

5/8 yard – Binding

This quilt pattern is also great for making a T-Shirt quilt. If the T-Shirts require larger squares, simple

alterations can be made. One option is to cut T-Shirts 11” x 11” square. In this case, do not use First and

Second Image Borders. Continue following instructions to complete the quilt.

Any focus fabrics may be used as Images.

DISPLAY ALL 12 BLOCKS AND DETERMINE THE PLACEMENT OF EACH BLOCK ON YOUR

QUILT. There are 3 Images in each of the 4 Rows.

**Where you place an image determines where you sew the next strip on each Image.**

After you determine the placement of each image, cut and pin the correct label provided on

the “Label Sheet” below. The labels below are in the order I assembled my quilt. If you prefer

a different arrangement, label as desired.

Select 36 Charm Squares. Each Block has 3 Charm Squares. Set aside for now.

From remaining Charm Squares, select THREE Charm Squares and EIGHT Rectangles to be assembled

together in one Block. Repeat until you have a total of 12 stacks.

Sew Charm squares and rectangles together as illustrated. You decide which squares and rectangles you wish

to use for each. BE CAUTIOUS OF DIRECTIONAL FABRIC AND WHERE YOU PLACE IT IN EACH

BLOCK. I suggest you “pin” it to strip and sew it once you know the placement unless you enjoy “ripping out

seams”.

Sew 12 Charm Strips IN THIS SEQUENCE. You will use 2 squares and 4 rectangles in each strip. Each Block

will have ONE of these strips.

Sew 12 Charm Strips IN THIS SEQUENCE. You will use 1 charm and 4 rectangles in each. Each Block will

have ONE of these strips.

Sew a 2 ½” x 11” Accent Fabric strip to a 2 ½” square. Repeat 12 times. Set the remaining 12 Accent Fabric

strips aside for later use.

Before continuing, make sure you clearly understand there are 4 different Blocks . The placement of an Image

on each Block will dictate the placement and the process of how each Block is assembled. Follow the simple

illustrations for each Block.

URGENT INFORMATION: Please read all information before squaring up the blocks.

After completing 12 Blocks, each Block should be an 18 inch square.

BEFORE SEWING BLOCKS TOGETHER, EACH BLOCK MUST BE CUT TO A 17 INCH BLOCK

BY CUTTING ONLY THE EDGES WITH THE CHARM STRIPS. DO OT CUT THE IMAGE EDGES OF

THE BLOCK.

IF YOUR BLOCKS ARE AN ACCURATE 18 INCHES, CUT ½” OFF EACH OF THE CHARM STRIP EDGES ONLY! If

not, CUT ONLY ON EACH CHARM STRIP EDGE to square up each Block to 17 inch square.

Preview Blocks to confirm placement of Blocks is correct. Arrange 3 Blocks across and 4 Blocks down.

Sew Blocks in each row together. Sew Rows together. Quilt size is 50” x 66 ½’.

Sew Inner Borders to “sides” of quilt. Press seams toward Borders. Square up Corners. Sew top and

bottom Inner Borders. Press seams toward Borders. Square up corners. Sew Outer Borders to “sides” of

quilt. Press seams toward Border. Sew Outer Border to top and bottom. Press seam toward Border.

Square up corners. After quilting, bind quilt.

Thank you for choosing my “Winter Forest” quilt pattern. I hope you have truly enjoyed making this quilt.

Please email me photos of the quilt you make. I would love to post your photo in our “Gallery Section” on

our website http://www.oldsouthfabrics.com/gallery.htm if you don’t object.

EXPLANTION WHY EACH BLOCK MUST BE CUT ONLY ON THE CHARM STRIP

SIDE for a BLOCK 17” SQUARE BEFORE SEWING BLOCKS TOGETHER!!!!!

*****AFTER COMPLETEING 12 BLOCKS, THERE IS A MANDATORY STEP THAT MUST BE DONE

BEFORE YOU SEW YOUR BLOCKS TOGETHER FOR ALL SEAMS TO ALIGN.*****

IF YOU WANT TO KNOW WHY: The edge of the block that the Image is on CAN NOT be trimmed.

When you square up the block you must cut ONLY on the two edges that have Charm Strips.

See the easy explanation in “BOX” below:

After you make your blocks,

each block is 17 ½” Square.

Look at top Block. Notice the

2nd

seam on the bottom left is

4¼” from the left edge of the

Block.

Look at the bottom Block.

Focus on the left top edge.

Notice from the left edge to

the first seam is 4 ¾”.

When the blocks are sewn

together, all seams will NOT

match as they should.

Simple Solution- EACH BLOCK

MUST BE CUT TO A 17 INCH

BLOCK BY CUTTING

ONLY THE EDGES

WITH THE CHARM

STRIPS.
