ObjecJve of the work was to prepare micron size paQerns of gold black with high absorpJon in window of 3K5 μm wavelength. We demonstrated more than 90% of absorpJon in that window with minimum paQern feature size of 6 μm. Results This work was funded in part by EMX Intl. LLC SEM images of example goldblack micro paQerns on the silicon substrate is shown. In each SEM image, the goldK black appears light while the substrate appears dark. Absorptance spectra of two gold black paQerns with different protecJon layer thicknesses To promote adhesion and to mechanically stabilize goldblack SiO 2 protecJon layer (150 nm) was deposited on goldblack coaJngs before wet processes to form paQerns. The crossKsecJonal side views of the goldblack films Suggest that height of the structure remains constant at 3.5 μm even a_er protecJon layer deposiJon on top. To study spectral uniformity at higher spaJal resoluJon, goldblack paQerns with 150 nm of protecJon layer were invesJgated at the UWM Synchrotron RadiaJon Center with special resoluJon of 0.54 × 0.54 μm 2 . On the infrared image reflecJon spectra were extracted from pixels along the line which extends from gold black paQern (red) to silicon substrate (blue). There is a conJnuous trend of increment in reflecJon as we move towards the silicon substrate. SpaJal variaJon of Reflectance on goldblack paQern at 3 and 5 μm wavelengths The data on special uniformity of reflectance on goldblack PaQern suggest that at 5 um wavelength reflectance is higher with higher FluctuaJons (sJll low value of 5%). The protecJon layer does not affect the gold black absorpJon up to midKIR either, however wet processes during the paQern formaJon limit the high absorpJon up to 7 μm. We sJll achieve more than 90% of absorpJon in 3 to 5 μm wavelength window. IntroducJon These paQerns exhibited high resistance to mechanical damage while maintaining high infrared absorpJon. The smallest feature size achieved is close to 6 μm as shown. 10 μm SEM pictures of goldblack micro paQerns on silicon substrate 1 μm [email protected] www.physics.cos.ucf.edu Average Absorption > 90% Achieved
