NAPLAN ONLINE
Our school has been selected to trial the NAPLAN online

paper test. Over the next couple of weeks our Year 3 and 5
students will be involved in some test trials.
The trial will be conducted in September for students in
Years 3 and 5, with their results not recorded or reported on.
Further information will be provided to parents prior to the

BOBCAT OR DINGO HELP REQUIRED FOR OUR NEW
FITNESS STATIONS
During the first week of September the school’s new fitness
stations will be installed on the oval. Prior to this the company
installing the equipment require the school to dig out 3 small
areas, each being approximately 20-30 square metres and
30-40 centimetres deep. If you have a bobcat or dingo and

appreciated. Please contact the office or send an email to
[email protected] if you can assist with this
during the next couple of weeks.

ROBOCUP
Yesterday 2 teams represented Patterson Lakes Primary
School at the Victorian State RoboCup Junior competition held
at Melbourne University. The students’ engineered and
programmed their robots at lunch times with Mrs. Bearup and
showed them off to judges, students and teachers from other
schools and parent supporters. There were 700 students from
52 schools at the competition competing in soccer, rescue and
On stage.
Our teams competed in the ‘On Stage’ section, where the
robots were programmed to do a choreographed dance to
music. The robots performed to Swan Lake (the ballet) and
YoungBlood. Students need to use sensors, motors and gears
to get the robots to stay on the stage with moving parts to
entertain and meet all the other criteria to score points. They
were interviewed to explain their robot design and features and
the programming.
Out students certainly had the audience’s attention! There was
lots of oohs and ahs! Sadly no trophies to take home this time.
Next stop the Nationals in October for an Australian wide
audience.

SUN SMART POLICY
NO HAT/NO PLAY FROM MONDAY
3RD SEPTEMBER 2018
Our school’s SunSmart Policy comes in to effect on Monday,
3rd September for the remainder of the school year. In light
of the following SunSmart information, our school updated its
policy and students are required to wear their hats from the
1st September through until the 30th April.
Australia has one of the highest rates of skin cancer in the
world. More than 1700 people die from skin cancer every
year – that's more than the national road toll.
The SunSmart UV Alert is based on the UV Index forecast,
which predicts how much UV radiation will reach the ground
that day. The SunSmart UV Alert times are issued
throughout the year by the Bureau of Meteorology when the
UV Index is forecast to reach 3 or above.
The general rule of thumb for sun protection is as follows:
In Victoria, from September through to the end of April
average UV levels are 3 and above, which is when UV
radiation can damage skin and eyes and lead to skin cancer.
This is when sun protection is required.
From May to August the UV radiation levels are generally low
(1 or 2) in Victoria. Sun protection isn't needed unless you
are in alpine areas or near highly reflective surfaces such as
snow or water.
So when the UV Index is 3 and above:
1. Slip on sun-protective clothing
2. Slop on SPF30+, broad spectrum, water resistant
sunscreen – put it on 20 minutes before you go
outdoors and every two hours afterwards
3. Slap on a hat – that protects your face, head, neck
and ears
4. Seek shade
5. Slide on some sunglasses - make sure they meet
Australian Standards

displays and student projects, preferably A3 size.

Thank you to all our families that came and supported our Steam Night on

Dear Parents and Carers,
Re: Compass School Manager
At Patterson Lakes Primary School, we are now using the Compass Parent Portal system for our communications, student attendance data, parent/teacher meetings and absence/late/early leave parent approvals.
All families have been issued with a unique login for Compass. You will require this to access the system and your child’s profile. If you need this information re-issued, please contact Chloe at the front office on 9772 4011.
Compass provides you with relevant alerts that require your action or attention. E.g. unexplained absences, a News Feed and quick links to your child’s profile. Parents play an important role in this initiative. It is essential that parents log in regularly to the Compass Parent Portal to access the calendar and the newsletter.
Please be advised that as of the end August 2018, we will no longer be sending out alerts through our school app FlexiBuzz. All communication to families will be sent out through Compass School Manager (including the school newsletter).
There will still be times of course, when we will send home hard copies of information to families and we will still be producing our weekly newsletter, which will be sent on Compass and hard copies are available at the front office.
To access Compass, go to the following link https://patterson-lakes-ps-vic.compass.education/ and save it to your desktop or download the app ‘Compass School Manager’ on your phone or tablet.
Kind regards
Carole Mayes
