LMTA  STATE  CONVENTION  UNIVERSITY  OF  LOUISIANA  LAFAYETTE              OCTOBER  1-­‐2,  2015  

CONVENTION GUEST ARTIST

• String Rally – Sonia Feres-Lloyd is our chair

for this event. It will take place at The Livingston Parish Literacy and Technology Center, an extension of SLU and located in Walker. The date is Saturday, April 25. The syllabus is located on the LMTA website. Please contact Sonia at [email protected] for more information.

• Harp Rally – Unfortunately, Harp Rally will not take place this year. Those involved have decided to take a break from it.

• Piano Rally – Of course, these take place all around the state starting in March and going all the way to May. Please consult the website (www.lmta.org) for individual district chairs to contact for more information.

o Syllabus Changes – Thanks to Laura Pray, our fabulous webmaster, there has been a detailed revision to the syllabus. IMPORTANT CHANGES include how to register students to participate. PLEASE print a new copy of this syllabus and discard the old. We have also tried to make the information more stream-lined and easy to find.

o Level I Requirements – Please consult the syllabus for a slight change in the requirements for Level I Performance

o Transfer Students – IF YOU HAVE A TRANSFER STUDENT WHO PARTICIPATED IN RALLY LAST YEAR – contact Carla at [email protected] to switch them to you.

o New Teachers to Rally – please contact me at [email protected] to get you signed up in the data base. I will need name, address, phone, email, and MTNA number, if you have one.

o Former Teachers – please get on the database website – www.rally-lmta.org and update your students NOW. Consult the instructions on www.lmta.org or the “Help” box in the upper right-hand corner on the database website for details on how to do this. Contact Carla or me with any questions or problems.

RALLY NEWS CONTINUED FROM PAGE 1 From the President continued… Louisiana continues to rank first in MTNA Certifications! Thanks to all of you for your commitment to upholding this standard of excellence! Thanks to Sue Steck-Turner and Katherine Tobey for their commitment to supporting our members as they go through the certification process. Emily Hirsch has resigned her position as board member at large due to personal circumstances. Lauren Lewandowski (NOMTA) has agreed to fulfill the remainder of Emily’s term. I would like to welcome her to the executive committee and to thank her for her willingness to serve. I hope many of you are planning to attend the MTNA Conference, March 22 – 25, in Las Vegas. LMTA will again support the Foundation Fund by sponsoring a state table at the Gala. We will honor Regina Walker as our Louisiana Foundation Fellow for 2015. Karla Salas Ruiz from LSU has won the LMTA collegiate travel award. She will receive a $500 grant to assist her with travel expenses to the national conference. LMTA offers two $500 awards to collegiate chapter members each year in order to encourage our youngest members to be involved. I hope those of you who wish to attend the 2016 conference in San Antonio will apply for this grant. Information is available through your chapter advisor. Louisiana was well represented at the South Central Division Competitions. Congratulations to all those who participated. We are proud of our students and teachers and are pleased that we are able to support our young musicians. You can see all Louisiana winners by clicking here. The Torgrimson Swanzy Competition will be held June 6, 2015 at Emmanuel Baptist Church in Alexandria. This will be the first time this event has been held outside a university. We appreciate your patience as we work with a new venue. Thanks to Robin Ebeyer, our Rally Chair, for organizing this event. The LMTA Summer Board Meeting will be held at The Wesley Center on Saturday, August 29, 2015. If you serve on the Board please mark your calendar for a day of sharing ideas for the future of LMTA. Our 2015 LMTA Convention will be held at the University of Louisiana, Lafayette, October 1-2. LaWanda Blakeney, President-elect, LAMTA members and local hosts Susie Garcia and Chan Kiat Lim are already hard at work planning an exciting and rewarding experience in the great city of Lafayette. Our guest artist will be Myrna Setiawan. Guest clinicians include Glenda Austin from Hal Leonard and Linda Christensen from Joy Tunes. Mark your calendars to join us for great music, great food and great hospitality!

The 2015 NEW ORLEANS PIANO INSTITUTE July 19-26, Loyola University, New Orleans, La.

An intensive solo performance program for intermediate and advanced

college, high school, and junior high school pianists. 2015 NOPI participants receive private lessons, master classes, and attend lectures and

discussions. In addition there will be the NOPI Solo Piano Competition with 2 age groups (16 and under, 17 and older) with 3 monetary prizes for each group! And the NOPI Concerto Competition. (Sponsored by The Steinway Society and Hall Piano Company), the winner will perform with the N.O, civic symphony. All events take place in Roussel Hall, the music building on the beautiful campus of Loyola University right across the street from our beloved Audubon Park. Housing is available at the Loyola dormitory! All master classes, lectures, and student recitals are free and open to the public. ABOUT THE PROGRAM:

• Institute participants will receive FOUR private lessons and perform in ONE master class. • NOPI Solo Competition participants will receive THREE private lessons and perform in ONE master class. • Active Observers will receive TWO private lessons and observe all NOPI master classes, lectures, and

performances. • Participants may play on a Showcase Recital at the end of the Institute with scholarship prizes awarded. • Performers may compete in a Concerto Competition for the opportunity to perform with New Orleans

Pssst! Know something that you’d like to share? Turn it into a session proposal! We’re now accepting proposals for sessions from members who wish to present at the 2015 LMTA Convention, October 1-2 at University of Louisiana at Lafayette. Session length is 50 minutes. Collegiate members should include the name and contact information for their faculty advisor. Please submit the following no later than April 1:

COLLEGIATE CHAPTER NEWS Christy Corley, Collegiate Chapter

The Collegiate Chapters had their annual meeting at the LMTA State Convention in Ruston, LA, last October. After getting acquainted over lunch, those in attendance elected new officers. They are President: Mary Buller, McNeese Vice President: Su Hsueh Lo, McNeese Treasurer: Colin Smith, U-Louisiana, Lafayette Secretary: Kendrick Celestine, McNeese LMTA generously provides travel stipends for two collegiate members to attend the MTNA National Convention. New guidelines were adopted to apply for the award. It is now open to any student who is a member of a LMTA Collegiate Chapter. They must write a short essay stating why they wish to attend the convention and have a supporting reference from their Collegiate Chapter Advisor. Karla Salas Ruiz from LSU is the recipient of this year’s travel award. Karla, we wish you safe travel and hope you gain much from attending this year’s convention in Las Vegas! Other Events: Pedagogy Saturday, March 14 McNeese State University Department of Performing Arts and the Lake Charles Piano Teachers Association is hosting Pedagogy Saturday on Saturday, March 14, 2015. All LMTA members are invited to attend. The clinician for the day will be Dr. Scott Price from the University of South Carolina, a well-known performer, master class clinician, and presenter. Dr. Price is also the founder of the Carolina Lifesong Initiative that is dedicated to providing piano lessons and music experiences for students with special needs and in fostering best practices in teaching and teacher training. Pedagogy Saturday Events 9:00-Noon Masterclass with Dr. Scott Price 1:30 Teaching Students with Autism, Dr. Price 3:00 Approaches to Working with Autistic Students, Alfred Tuminello, Director of the McNeese Autism Program 7:30 Guest Artist Piano Recital, Dr. Price All events take place in the Shearman Fine Arts Annex and are free to the public. Upper Elementary Auditions were held October 10, 2015 at Louisiana Tech University in Ruston. There were seven students and two teachers participating. Serving as adjudicator was Dr. Rick Seiler from the University of Louisiana at

Monroe. A $50 check was awarded from LMTA to the Alternate and a $100 check was awarded to the winner. Cassie Yang, student of Chia-Ling Lien of Baton Rouge was named alternate, and Katie Wang, also a student of Lien was named winner. Two Honorable Mentions were named – Hana Le and Sophie Puljak, both students of Jeanne Patterson. Elementary Auditions is an
