Pacific Area Travel Writers Association

On behalf of the World Tourism Organization (UNWTO), a specialized Agency of the United Nations, I am very pleased to welcome you to the PATWA International Sem-inar on Peace for Growth of Tourism.

Tourism in Asia and the Pacific continues to grow above expectations, advancing the economies, helping to pre-serve diverse cultures and environments, and contributing to efforts at lasting peace in the region.

I commend the Pacific Area Travel Writers Association (PATWA) for organizing this timely seminar and for their longstanding efforts to promote tourism in regional devel-opment agendas within Asia and the Pacific and interna-tionally.

Globally, tourism is a pillar of peace and a cornerstone of development – creating jobs, reducing inequality, creating more prosperous and stable societies, and improving lives.

It is a powerful transformative force that broadens minds, builds bridges between people, com-munities and nations, and like few other economic sectors helps communities value themselves, their cultures and traditions, their environment, and their place in the world.

However, we must work together, across sectors and borders, to ensure that tourism contributes to sustainable social, economic and environmental development while continuing to promote global citizenship, tolerance and understanding. With 1.8 billion international arrivals expected in 2030, and the world working to reach the universal Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in that time, all of us must work together to ensure that tourism leads in providing opportunities for a sustainable and equitable planet.

In this vein I invite all of you to celebrate with us as we mark 2017 as the International Year of Sustainable Tourism for Development – an important opportunity to promote and celebrate the contribution of tourism to a more sustainable, equitable, inclusive and peaceful future for all.

DR. WALTER MZEMBI (M.P.)

As we advance to the end of the year, 2016, global citi-zens must surely hope that somehow the world will, this last quarter, get better and continue to strive for peace. No destination can sell nor package conflict, no matter how beautiful it might be as long as the envi-ronment is characterized by instability.

We are all peace ambassadors and let us have the desire to travel, and this drives tourism growth and enables voluntary capital transfers to other destina-tions. Destinations keep benefiting from solid peace, because peace guarantees safety and security of trav-elers. The world is awash with premium and creative tourist products and services. When a destination is peaceful, investment grows on the basis of “Visit-Trade and Invest”, with everything staring with visiting.

On the overall tourism will continue to grow from 25 million in 1950, has grown incrementally to 1.2 billion in 2015. No sector has had such exponential growth, and the ‘self’ (tourist) seeks ways of compre-hending and even experiencing the other, for purposes of mutual understanding and mutual co-existence, be it for a brief and limited period, or for a longer and extended period. In tourist ‘self’ largely seeks to deploy SOFT POWER to win over the ‘other’. It highlights commonalities between ‘self’ and ‘other’.

Terrorism on the other hand seeks to distance ‘self’ from ‘other’, and highlights differences be-tween the two. Terrorism is judgmental, seeing ‘self’ as all righteous, and ‘other’ as otherwise. Most fundamentally, terrorism seeks to win over the ‘other’ to its side by coercion or force. It seeks, to deploy its HARD POWER.

I am happy to know that the Pacific Area Travel Writ-ers Association (PATWA) is organizing a seminar on ‘Peace for Growth of Tourism-New Agenda’.

The Sustainable Development Goals are integral to achieving peace in our time, as development and peace are independent and mutually reinforcing.

Peace is essential for the growth of tourism. Every tourist likes to go to a country which is peaceful in terms of safety, to areas which has no conflict and no disturbance. The subject of the seminar is therefore very apt and relevant.

I wish that Seminar turns out to be big success.

MESSAGE FROM VINOD ZUTSHI

Right A view of the Audience

Tourism in Asia and the Pacific continues to grow above expectations, advancing the economies and

helping to preserve the diverse cultures and environment of the region. “Last year, 279 million people visited Asia and the Pacific, 15 million more than in 2014, as the region earned US$418 billion in international tourism receipts. Yet in this region and across the globe, the continued growth of our sector brings with it increased levels of responsibil-ity” said Dr. TalebRifai, Secretary General, United Nations WTO in his message for PATWA Seminar on ‘Tourism For Development’ followed by Safari India South Asia Travel Awards, which was recently held at Banquet Hall of Ashok Hotel, New Delhi. The ceremony was attended by the large number of media, top travel agents, tour operators, hote-liers, corporates and diplomats. “Tourism has been recognized by world leaders as one of the important sectors that can contribute to the 17 Sustainable Development Goals. It is up to us to live up to that responsibility and work together to make travel and tourism more inclusive and beneficial to our planet and all people”, he added. He further said, “Much has been written by travel

writers, or pledged by governments and businesses, on forging a sustainable path for our sector. With sustainabil-ity ever more of an imperative for all tourism stakeholders, it is time to translate the sentiments we have read and heard into concrete actions.” Dr. Mahesh Sharma, Minister of State for Tourism and Culture in his message said, “Tourism in India contin-ues to grow above expectations, advancing the economies and helping to preserve the diverse cultures and environ-ment of India. The percentage of foreign tourist’s arrivals in India during January among the top 15 source countries with 15.29 per cent share, followed by Bangladesh (11.99 per cent), the UK (11.23 per cent), Canada (4.87 per cent), Australia (3.97 per cent) and Russian Federation (3.71 per cent).”

“As a professional organization representing members, from all over the world, the Pacific Area Travel Writers Association (PATWA), has been promoting profes-sional development of Travel Writing & Travel Commu-nication, thus making an invaluable contribution for the promotion of tourism. Further, as an affiliate member of the United Nations World Tourism Organisation (UNWTO) and supported by World Travel Forum, PATWA has been adhering to the fundamental principles of the world’s or-ganizations for the development of tourism”, Vijay Goel, Minister of States for Youth Affairs and Sports Minister of State for Water Resources, River Development, Govern-ment of India (in his written message). Dr. Mario Hardy, Chief Executive Officer, Pacific Asia Travel Association (PATA) also written in his message,

“PATWA was established during the PATA Conference in Colombo, Sri Lanka in 2008 with the aim of promoting pro-fessional development of travel writing and travel commu-nication to provide invaluable contribution to the promotion of tourism.” He also said, “Both organizations understand the importance and impact the travel and tourism industry has on countries, communities and people and, with this in mind, the mission and objectives of both Association are aligned in enhancing the growth, value and quality of travel and tourism within the region.” “Karnataka is one of the first State in India to tap the potential of eco-tourism. Major Eco-Tourism destina-tions in Karnataka cover a wide range of options including wildlife safaris, jungle living, island living, river rafting and organized eco-treks. Eco-tourism provides an opportunity to the Urban Dweller to experience various facets of the State’s bountiful nature and wildlife”, said PriyankKharge, Minister of Tourism, Government of Karnataka in his mes-sage. He also said, “With the vision of exploring the vast potential of Eco-tourism within the State, Jungle Lodges and Resorts a sister concern of the Department of Tour-

ism was set up in 1980 as the State’s wildlife and eco-tourism initiative, which is now a responsible eco-tourism company with 17 properties located in Karnataka’s amaz-ing natural destinations covering diverse themes such as wildlife, nature, adventure, angling and beaches. Kabini, KyathadevaraGudi ,Bandipur, Bhadra, Sloth Bear, Black-buck, Bannerghatta, Dubare, Pilikula, Bhimgad, Galibore and Bheemeshwari are the few JLR properties offering well-furnished, eco-sensitive living quarters (tented cot-tages/ loghuts), excellent cuisine and outdoor activities.” Pronab Sarkar, President, Indian Association of Tour Operators (IATO) said, “Development for Tourism is one of the biggest challenge and without tourism a coun-try’s development is not possible. Many countries are giv-inglots of importance for the promotion of tourism.” He further said, “The Connectivity is the main is-sue for any domestic sector to develop, either rail, water or road. Just because of good connectivity people can travel from one place to another place. Infrastructure develop-ment in our country is also very important. If we want tour-ists, we have to develop the infrastructure.” “Each circuit needs to be developed, each state need to come up with their Individual USP. Every state

should develop their circuits not only the religious places but also tourist attractions. Another key issue is, each state should need to do marketing and promotion. The lack of marketing really does not boost tourism”, said Sarkar. “Gujarat was not at all promoted till 2010, after 2010 it got promotedand now they have achieved remark-able growth. Tourism of Goa and Kerala everybody knows.Madhya Pradesh has come up with big way. They have started advertising not only in India, abroad also. They are participating in foreign exhibitions. This is needed by all the states.North east are not doing much of development, ei-ther it tourism infrastructure or the promotion. Tourism also can provide job opportunities to youngsters”, he added. “Over the last four or five decades, there is always be a persistent demand from our side to give infrastructure status. I think our industry needs infrastructure status, it could help us in many ways. Another issue is GST, there are two aspects of GST, First is low percentage we want and second the hospitality should be promoted not only in India but also abroad”, said Amitabh Deven -dra, Secretary General, FHRAI. PP Khanna, President, ADTOI, said, “India is a large country in travel and tourism. It is offering lots of port-

folios in the niche market, like wellness & spa, medical, eco, rural tourism, etc. Government is doing lot of efforts for the development of tourism in India and they are really doing other aspects also with their branding like ‘Incredible India’ and ‘AtithiDevoBhav’, which is very remarkable and worldwide it has name.” He also said, “The state tourism bodies really do-ing lots of roadshows, they are participating in national and international seminars. They are also doing best ef-fortswith the agenda to promote India in different states. The main focus isthat how to develop tourism and how we can work with Ministry of Tourism and state tourism body.” Since 2001, Safari India Travel Awards are being given annually to professionals and organisations in travel and tourism industry, for having an estimable edge in their field of work. These awards are given to recognize the leadership quality in the field of hotel, tourism and travel agents. It also recognises the professional work done by the state governments. These recommendations are given by the travel industry and approved by the Editorial Board of Safari India.
