Auxiliary Spotlight

As Auxiliary Chair for the Hawaii Chapter, I am very pleased to share with you the life story of one of our most accomplished members, REGINA KIRCHNER, Doctor of Education (Ed.D.) Born Regina Kever, in Brooklyn, NY, she moved within a year with her family to Queens which became their lifelong home. There, as an early avid reader, her favorite book became the ATLAS -- which instilled in her a love of World History and Travel, earning her the American Legion Medal for ‘Excellence in History’ upon her eighth grade graduation. Her knowledge and passion for visiting and learning about far away lands set the stage for dreams and hopes that Regina transformed into reality by taking full advantage of life’s journeys. In the summer of her 17th year, before entering New York University, Regina met her future husband Al, while swimming off Long Island in the Atlantic Ocean. Al was a summer lifeguard who came to her rescue when Regina suffered a debilitating leg cramp, a painful condition which persisted through the years. But in keeping with her cou-rageous spirit, she refused to let that prevent her from partnering with husband Al to swim in the Waikiki Rough Wa-ter competitions for ten years, winning awards partly enabled because her doctor prescribed a Quinine Tablet, most often used as a malaria preventative, (don’t try this as a remedy for leg cramps before consulting with your doctor.) In August of 1941, Al joined the Army and the couple married at Camp McCain, Mississippi, June 6, 1943. Dur-ing her long years as an Army wife, Regina bravely coped with separations, and often by herself, handled the rearing of their three children – two girls and a boy. Leslie became an educator, Lorin a future Marine Lt. Col., and Keith graduated from the Air Force Academy and served in the USAF. Successful children are a reflection of an upbringing by parents who serve as exemplary role models, which, any of us would agree, accurately describes Regina & Al. Throughout Al’s many honorable years of service in World War II, and the Korean and Vietnam Wars, Regina ‘kept the home fires burning’ as all of our auxiliary spouses can understand. Although hardships were experienced, few would trade the opportunities, experiences and comradeship enjoyed as military spouses. The Kirchners took ad-vantage of overseas assignments by traveling to those ’far away places with strange sounding names’ Regina had read and dreamt about in her youth. Among the most memorable of her travels was receiving a personal blessing from Pope Pius XII when she and Al visited the Pope’s summer residence in Italy; passing through to Berlin at Checkpoint Charlie; and experiencing history firsthand while living in Nuremberg during the German war crimes trials, and then during the Berlin Airlift. Regina also took advantage of continuing her education and giving back to her communities. While stationed at Ft. Everybody, Somebody, Anybody, and Nobody

In the August 2008 PHK, we asked for some volunteers, for the following positions: 3 Board seats, a PHK Co-Editor, Directory Business Manager, Directory Editor, President and 1st VP. Disappointingly, I have only talked with one person who was willing to volunteer. Our annual meeting is fast approaching in November, during which new Board members will be elected

and Chapter Officers chosen. Continuing to provide high quality services to our members requires that members step up to help run the Chapter. I am reminded of Everybody, Somebody, Anybody, and Nobody. We can rewrite that old saying. Please raise your hand, bring your ideas to the table and help make the Ha-waii Chapter better. The open Directory positions are a finite short-term project and very important for fund raising. Board positions alone, along with being 1st VP, do not require a huge time commitment. Hawaii Chapter has enjoyed dedicated volunteers, as evidenced by the repeat 5 Star awards by National MOAA and participation in the National Symposium. However, fewer volunteers and the same workload results in faster burnout. The myriad of behind-the-scenes details can be significant. Sharing just some of this work is a tremendous help - as the Ralph Wetterhahn event demonstrates. Alex Vanston, our 1st VP, as a friend of Ralph’s, recommended him for a presentation. Alex did the initial coordination and then Jim Gebhard, our 2nd VP, took the lead for planning the event, and working with the Pacific Aviation Museum and caterer (doing a Great job!!). The PHK Editor printed articles about Ralph’s work, generating interest, the Treasurer handled accounting, and members pitched in to cover nametags, check-ins, leis, the invocation, introduction and other event details. The great leadership in the Hawaii Chapter, that ADM Hays discussed at this event, consists mostly of volunteers cooperating together to serve our members. Everybody did Something so No-body burned out and Anybody could benefit from Somebody’s collaboration and volunteering! Aloha, ————————————————————————————————————————–—————————-

Hawaii Chapter Earns Another Consecutive 5 Star National Award for Excellence!

Members of the national board of directors who serve on the Council and Chapter Affairs Committee con-vened in July and reviewed dozens of submissions for the 2007 Levels of Excellence Awards. After careful consideration, the judges determined that 52 chapters earned cov-eted five-star awards for their outstanding performance, and 30 chapters earned four-star awards for their excellent performance. Special streamers will be presented to the win-ners. In Category I (400-599 members), the Hawaii Chapter earned our 4th consecutive 5 Star award. This sustained superior performance speaks to the dedication, quality, strength and commitment of our volunteers! Congratulations to all those who contributed, and in particular past President John Harms and Chairman of the Board Bruce Smith! Bravo Zulu.

MOAA 2008 Symposium The 2008 MOAA Chapter Presidents' Symposium and Personal Affairs Workshop is being held this year at South Lake Tahoe, NV during October 16-18. In addition to the excellent training sessions, updates and briefings that will be presented by the National MOAA staff, this is a unique opportunity to meet and ex-change ideas with other chapters from around the country. VADM Norbert Ryan, USN (Ret), President of MOAA, will be in attendance, along with other officers of the MOAA Headquarters staff. This will provide an excellent discussion forum to present any questions and obtain the latest information that may help us in the work we do in our own Chapters. If any member has questions, ideas or input that they would like to see surfaced at the Symposium, contact any of the following members who will be in attendance: COL Jim Gebhard, USAF(Ret) - 262-1165; Captain Jerry Lesperance USCG(Ret) - 488-5205; CDR Bill Moore, USN(Ret) - 261-4071; MAJ George Montague, USAF(Ret) - 239-4222; Anna Blackwell (Auxiliary) - 739-9164. ————————————————————————————————————————–—————————- To read the PHK in Vivid COLOR, go online to:

These professional experiences opened her eyes further regarding the need for better quality materials and im-proved teacher training methods to provide children with effective lifetime skills. During Al’s assignment as Professor Military Science at Bowling Green State University, Regina, as a mem-ber of a program sponsored through the Medical College of Toledo, spoke to teachers about teaching methods to help children with learning disabilities. In that period, she earned her Master’s Degree and, on the Doctoral level, a degree in Special Education -- providing credentials for becoming Director of Elementary Education, for 25 years at Chaminade University, in Honolulu. While juggling many duties, amazingly, Regina even earned a Doctoral Degree in Education from the University of Southern California! Again fulfilling her lifelong dream, Dr. Kirchner traveled twice to Eastern Europe, the first time with 33 other Professors invited by the USSR through the People to People Program for a Conference on the Teaching of Reading. After the conference she traveled to Lithuania and spent that summer meeting and working with teach-ers. A second People to People Program invitation was to a conference in Taiwan, with stops in Indonesia, Ma-laysia, Singapore and Hong Kong. A Chaminade University sponsored program sent Regina to Ponape (now Pohnpei) to work for a summer with teachers in Micronesia. The next summer, while visiting daughter Lorin, in Spain, the townspeople were in awe watching a woman visitor out running everyday. Little did they know she was training to run the Honolulu Marathon which she also ran two years later. As Director of Elementary education at Chaminade, Regina visited some 100 schools on Oahu, Maui, Kauai and Molokai to supervise student teachers. She also taught education courses on Schofield, Fort Shafter and the Kaneohe Marine Corps Base. Regina’s goal in training future teachers, was to instill in them the importance of making learning meaningful to students by integrating their lessons so subjects would be relevant and timely, unlike the traditional ineffective way of ‘instruction in isolation’. This philosophy, highly successful in New Zealand (at that time rated the num-ber one school system in the world) was taking hold in school systems throughout the United States. Unfortu-nately, Regina found that powerful traditional textbook publishers stifled this progress; yet, did learn to adapt this integrated teaching philosophy to lessons in their texts, which is a good thing, as Regina always taught. Regina’s work in education is epitomized by the Kuan Chung quote: “If you plan for a year, plant a seed. If for ten years, plant a tree. If for a hundred years, teach the people. When you sow a seed once, you will reap a single harvest. When you teach the people, you will reap a hundred harvests.” After her retirement, she and Al continued to swim non-stop for 45 minutes a day until the cancer he had de-veloped began to accelerate. Regina lamented, “I lost my best friend in July 2002”. She has maintained her mili-tary connection by, as she says, “proudly serving as the only woman and civilian member of the Army Retiree Council.” Regina has continued to travel, having visited over 70 countries in Asia, Europe, South America and Africa, as well as countless islands. This door, however, may be closed on future travels, as Regina was recently diag-nosed with Lou Gehrig’s disease. Because the prognosis is unknown, sadly for us, Regina is preparing to move to Massachusetts to a beautiful retirement community where she will be near two of her children, five grand-children and four great grandchildren. She enthusiastically declares “the nicest part (of the change) is, another door is about to open”, an inspiringly positive view from a woman who has taken the hand life dealt her and made it into at least a full house each time. We all wish Regina Godspeed and applaud her for fulfilling hopes and dreams she shaped into reality during an adventurous and rewarding lifetime. She is a perfect example of IT CAN BE DONE, don’t ever give up!! So we say to her now, “Don’t ever give up Regina, you have set for us an inspiring example of how to make our dreams come true.” In closing, I have known Regina for many years and knew her story to be positively inspirational. Humbly, she was reluctant, but was persuaded to let us share in her life and accomplishments. Some months ago, I mailed out a survey to Auxiliary members and, though I may not know you personally, I do know there are many of you who have a similar inspiring tale to tell. PLEASE, don’t hide your light under a bushel, share with us your life-time adventures, chronicles, and anecdotes. Contact me by phone or email to recommend members we can high-light in our Auxiliary Spotlight.

Putting a high-tech face on an age-old practice: Thumbing a ride.

As most of you know, I spend lots of time looking at new tech stuff and reading reviews, press releases and feature articles. Most months also feature technology oriented trade shows where companies unveil their latest innovations…some of which, BTW, never

make it to market. Nevertheless, I enjoy looking at and reading about all of them. There was a show in San Diego (DEMOfall08) the second week of September, where a bunch of new stuff was announced. Obviously I don’t have room for all, or even a lot of them, so I picked a couple I thought you would enjoy reading about, I have listed some with just a short summary along with a link where you can go for much more info. For a much more detailed article, please read my online column after 1 Oct at: http://tinyurl.com/363qew To begin, the title of the column refers to a program I think is really pretty clever…and who knows, it might work well in Honolulu to relieve some of our traffic woes. It’s called Avego. Avego is looking to replace the thumb as the tool of choice for getting rides on the road. The service uses an application that runs on the iPhone and other mobile devices to help match drivers and passengers travel-ing in the same direction. Avego is designed to augment public transportation, and save fuel by encouraging drivers to share rides. For a detailed look, visit http://www.avego.com/ui/index.action This is a really interesting one…communicating without web sites. To see how you might use it, visit: http://www.telnic.com/individual-landing.html Mere mortals who aren’t technically inclined do not need to know how Telnic’s new .tel service works. We can just think about the benefits. Basi-cally, without using a web site, you can now list your information on the Internet so that people can contact you directly. It’s the mother of all tele-phone books. Using a new kind of Internet domain name dubbed .tel, the service allows you to embed your contact information in an Internet address book known as a DNS server (domain name server). The .tel domain was approved by the Internet governing body ICANN in 2006. It doesn’t host web sites but directly links domain names with contact information stored in the Internet’s infrastructure. The company showed a plug-in for the BlackBerry which lets you import .tel data into a phone. This one’s my favorite considering all the spinning going on as we are almost to the election. It’s a long read, but worth the time. Also, remember it’s a beta. For more, visit: http://spinspotter.com/home/ Spin doesn't belong in the news. It's like putting motor oil in the mojito. We have tremen-dous respect for journalists, but who would argue that the media circus isn't out of control? A full 66% of Americans think the press is one-sided. Now there's a website and software tool that exposes news spin and bias, misuse of sources, and suspect factual support. At SpinSpotter, you'll experience the news in a profound new way. Yes, the truth is back in town. Start your truth engines I don't know how u keep track of stuff, but I haven't had a very good system for a long time, but now I think this is what I've needed to get organ-ized! http://www.alerts.com is your personal information management (PIM) destination where you are in control of the information you need, such as updated news, your favorite team results, birthday or party reminders, airline fare price changes, severe weather warnings , and product price reductions to help you fight inflation. We help you control all time-sensitive information and events that shape your life. This one is an all-in-one travel planner which even lets u invite family and friends to collaborate with u to plan a trip.TravelMuse is the online des-tination for finding inspiration, planning trips and booking travel. Whether you are looking for destination ideas on where to take your next family vacation or you have all the details figured out, TravelMuse makes the entire planning process easy for you. TravelMuse combines original edito-rial content and destination city guides with powerful planning tools. Start your trip plan here: http://www.travelmuse.com/plan.htm If I'd had this a couple years ago when my cell phone disappeared I could have saved a bunch of bucks, not to mention the time I had to spend to cancel my old one and get a new phone and set it up. Maverick Secure Mobile (MSM) is a security application. Secure mobile helps you protect your data, track your stolen device, retrieve your phonebook & disable the stolen device remotely. The application works in hidden mode and cannot be viewed in the device, To launch / customize this application one has to press pre defined short keys and password. After installing MSM in the device one must add “Reporting contact” in the application. Reporting contact can be your second number/friends number or any other mobile number on which you want to receive all the reports. Visit: http://www.maverickmobile.in/maverick/msm.jsp for a complete rundown on this security app. Since I have Pinnacle’s PCTV HD Pro Stick installed (see my May column) this one really appeals to me! So far, we’ve relied on TV Guide — or TiVo — to know when and what television programs are scheduled on TV. But we haven’t had anything of the sort for Internet video. Partly that’s because Internet video runs when we want, not at a scheduled time: You simply click in a video link, or type in a URL for the video, and hit play. But even if you throw out the timing guide, you still want to a way to track the news, entertainment and other video you like — especially since so much of it is coming online. Invision TV helps you organize the videos you want to watch by topic, search for more videos, and then share them all from a personalized interface. But here’s the real goal for Invision TV: Eventually, it wants to be your start guide for your living room TV — once households embrace Internet video on demand as their primary source for viewing. Check it out at: www.invision.tv Last on my list of interesting and useful programs is RealDVD. Real networks has been around a long time. In 1995 they gave the Internet a voice with the first-ever Internet broadcast via the release of the RealAudio® Player. This mainstream PC application allows consumers to easily save their DVDs to their hard drive. RealDVD makes it easy to save DVDs to a PC or portable hard drive and watch them later without the physi-cal discs. Unlike existing consumer applications on the market today, RealDVD is licensed DVD software that saves a secure copy of a DVD to the hard drive without removing or altering the CSS encryption. They say this is a legal solution for those of us who want the extra copy and want the capability of watching DVD programs on our laptops without having to carry the discs around. Visit www.realdvd.com for a full writeup on this program. That’s it for now, please remember to keep safe out there on the net while you’re having fun with all the new goodies. On May 27, 1943, his B-24 flew from Hawaii and crashed 800 miles at sea. Surviving the flaming wreckage, he and two others waited for rescue. They drifted two thousand miles for forty-seven days... strafe by enemy aircraft… their only nour-ishment…captured … threatened with beheading…declared dead by Army Air Corps … endured torture… humiliation… medical experiments… over two years as POW and forced labor camps. He survived only to endure… A stirring memoir from one of the greatest of “the Greatest Generation,” here is a presentation about the brutality of war, the tenacity of the human spirit, and the power of forgiveness. It is said--

”Louis Zamperini's life is a story that befit the greatness of the country he served. What he found, beyond the hor-ror of the prison camps and the ghosts he carried home with him, is inspiring.” Share this incredible, death-defying life experience presentation. At 91, Lou is still going strong and is delighted to return to Hawaii. This is not a promotional event but a memorable presentation by Lou’s friends. If you cannot make this event read “Devil At My Heels.” On behalf of the Pacific Rim Chapter of the SAFE Association and Mr. & Mrs. Charles Jones. Come Early!!! Seats may be limited.
