PRINCIPAL Term 3 has been busy and productive. The Year 10 Ski Trip was an outstanding success with all staff and students thoroughly enjoying themselves, a big thanks to Mr Mantei and his team for this event. Mrs Hamment held the highly successful Business Breakfast and Careers Market for all year groups on September 7th. Feedback from students and businesses was highly positive. Thanks to Mrs Hamment and Mrs Stamper and the staff and students who assisted.

I am pleased to announce that 235 (Year 7, 8 and 9) students have completed the Premiers Reading Challenge, a huge effort from them and a particular thank you to Mrs Cross and the English Staff for ensuring we met this important milestone. The Major Works Exhibition on Thursday 31st August was an enormous success. I was pleased to welcome Parents, friends and Mrs Gilmore from Zig Zag Public School and Mrs Macky from Wallerawang Public School all were very impressed by the quality and standard of the work. Congratulations to Mr Bawden and his team in Art and to Mr Brownlow and the Team in TAS. Well done to all the Year 12 students on great work! The English Extension 2 works, Society and Culture, Software Design and Development Projects, Dance, Music and Drama Performances were of an equally high standard - well done to staff and students involved. The end of Term 3 is a good time to reflect on our Year 12 students as they prepare to finish school and complete their HSC exams and move on to the next stage of life. School assessment has finished and now it is a time for students to revise, study and practise up to the final examinations in October. I remind parents and students that teachers and tuition are here to help right up to the day of exams. In reviewing the assessments of the Year 12 students, I am hopeful we will see some excellent results from this year’s cohort. I would like to take this time to thank all the teachers of Year 12 for their sustained efforts and to Mrs Willis and Mrs Beutel who have worked so hard to support them in the library. The provision of tuition in the library has been a great success and greatly appreciated by the students. A particular thanks to Mrs Hamment, our Careers Adviser who has worked tirelessly to build the aspirations of our Senior Students. I acknowledge Ms Alexander for her ongoing support as Year Adviser. I look forward to seeing family and friends at the Graduation Ceremony on Friday 22nd September at 9.30 am. Congratulations and good luck to all Year 12, 2017.

DEPUTY PRINCIPAL I would like to take this opportunity to congratulate all the students in Year 12 as they come to the final phase of their school life. Term 3 is a particularly frantic and stressful time for them with Trial HSC exams and major works being due in a number of subjects.

The major works that have been submitted in Dance, Drama, English Extension, Industrial Technology, Society and Culture and Visual Arts have been excellent. Students have worked really hard and have been

guided by dedicated teachers and well supported by their families.

Year 12 are reminded that there is still a need to increase the level of their revision and study for their HSC exams. There is still time to work hard and the opportunity to maximise their marks in their exams. They are encouraged to continue accessing the assistance of the tutors in the Library during their examination period.

Best wishes to all the Year 12 students, it has been a pleasure to work with them this year.

Jeff Dean DEPUTY PRINCIPAL

Year 11 students are currently completing their end of course exams for the Preliminary Year. Students are advised to ensure that they complete any outstanding assessment tasks and ensure they are handed in so they can move through to the HSC course. Students would be aware of the need to ‘redeem’ tasks and notifications would have been sent home previously. Any student who has failed to attend an end of course exam will be required to fill in an illness/misadventure

form and provide independent evidence such as a doctor’s certificate to comply with DoE procedures around this policy to allow for consideration of circumstances. If a student does not provide this supporting evidence, then they could result in a zero for their end of course exams. Year 11 students will be transitioning to the HSC course day one of term 4. Students will have a study day at the beginning of term to refresh their skills in this key area. The HSC assessment policy and task outline will be handed out to all students in the first few weeks of Term 4. An information session will accompany this. Year 8 I have visited many Year 8 classes and have observed them working hard in their classes, many students have been completing Topic Tests. It is fantastic to see their efforts. I will put a reminder out to students about the key PBL expectation ‘right place right time’ as it is very important to get to class on time to maximise learning. Camp will occur in Term 4, with notes about this already out with students and families. Please ensure that information about the camp is returned to school promptly. It is a great opportunity for students to come together in an outdoor recreation setting and develop their teamwork skills, a key element of working in later life.

Lithgow High School – Promoting Excellence In A Caring Educational Environment 4

All students should now have competed their elective selections for Year 9 and if there are any outstanding forms, please do not hesitate to contact Ms Cases for further information.

DEPUTY PRINCIPAL

VIVO - at this time of the year we are noticing an increase in the number of students accessing the shop. The managers will try to ensure that students making requests will get their item within 48hrs, if it is a LHS item. If it is an online reward it may take a few weeks to reach the school. At the end of this term, teaching staff have averaged over 15000 Vivo points per week. This means that students are applying themselves diligently in the classroom.

We have also awarded student of the term, congratulations to the following students:

Year 7 - James Cross - 470 points, Year 8 - Justice Dulay - 471 points, Year 9 - Geordie Goodwin - 375 points, Year 10 - Michael Brunzlow - 470 points, Year 11 - Jack McIntyre 595 points and Year 12 - Steven Young 395 points

Reminder about devices at school

Urgent phone messages to students are to be made through the School Office on 63521422.

To prevent a device from disrupting the normal routine of the learning environment of the school and being used as a means of bullying or harassment the following rules apply.

1. Student’s phones must be turned off and out of sight during class.

2. Phones or devices may not be taken into examinations under any circumstances.

3. Mobile phones cannot be used on any field trip or excursion without the permission of the teachers.

4. Students must not use any device for purposes of harassment, disruption, embarrassment or annoyance.

5. It is illegal to photograph or record anyone without their permission.

6. All devices brought to school are used entirely at the owner’s risk. The school takes no responsibility for loss, theft, or damage.

Lithgow High School – Promoting Excellence In A Caring Educational Environment 5

Persistent misuse of a phone or device will result in confiscation by the Deputy to hand their phone in for the day. The phone will be put in secure storage for the remainder of the day. Refusal to comply with teacher directions will be regarded as defiance and a greater penalty will result.

VIVO Rewards - designed to support student recognition, increase student engagement and drive positive learning.

Thank you to our many community sponsors for assisting us with voucher prizes and monetary donations allowing us to buy prizes for the VIVO shop. Vivo is an online web based program to help improve students’ performance, by motivating

students to perform their very best and reward with points for positive achievement both inside and outside the classroom. It is great to see students recognised for their consistent effort and behaviour, well done.

Mitchell Brain was very happy to have the prime parking location last week when he redeemed his Vivo Rewards on Mrs Caro’s parking space. You certainly look the part and we hope you enjoyed your short walk to the playground.

Jake Lewis was keen to grab his Workies Gift Voucher to spend next time he visits the club.

Thank you to our sponsors without your assistance we could not be able provide the wonderful Vivo incentives encouraging students to do their personal best.

2017 HSC MAJOR WORKS TAS

Students enrolled in the HSC Industrial Technology Course are required each year to research, design and produce a practical project. This project accounts for sixty per cent of their overall marks in that subject. This year students attempted two areas of study and they produced projects in both the Timber and Automotive strands. This is the 8th year that Lithgow High School has offered Automotive for the HSC.

The examiners from Board of Studies visited Lithgow High School recently and spent several hours closely scrutinising both the projects and the folios which must accompany each project. Each project represents four school terms worth of work. The quality of all of the projects this year was of a particularly high standard and it is hoped that this will be reflected in their marks.

One aspect, which particularly impressed was the use of a recently purchased laser cutter. This very expensive machine is able to engrave and cut images into almost any surface with great accuracy and several of the timber projects used this to great effect to enhance their already impressive projects. Students can now look forward to their formal HSC exams, which start early in Term 4.

A Message from Ms Alexander As the end draws near for my lovely Year 12 students, I would like to take this opportunity to thank all of the students for the time and memories we have shared over the past 6 years, it certainly has been a wonderful adventure. I feel honoured to have been your Year Advisor and I would like to wish you well in your up and coming HSC exams and your future endeavours.

I must say that I am very impressed and proud of the way you have conducted yourselves as you have prepared to leave LHS. You leave able to hold your heads high, a great adventure awaits you all as you go from the safety of this environment to one where you are far more at liberty to choose your paths. I am proud of your achievements over the years, your various successes in a wide range of pursuits from the great academic achievements, to the cultural pursuits of Performance, Art, Dance, Drama and Music through to Sport. You have willingly and enthusiastically accepted the challenge I gave you at the beginning of the year to grasp the many Leadership Opportunities, both Formal and Informal to positively influence the school as a whole, you will be missed by all.

I am looking forward to our Celebration on the Tuesday 14th November and I would like to remind parents/caregivers we still need assistance with the setup of celebration the day before, Monday 13th November.

Please remember to donate your uniform if you do not want to keep it, the donations will assist many families with the cost of senior school.

On Monday 21st August Stage 5 students from the Lithgow High School Film Makers Group travelled to Mt Victoria to Mt Vic Flicks for the red carpet launch of a very special road safety initiative.

The initiative represented a collaboration between Lithgow High School, Mt Victoria Public School, Blue Mountains Neighbourhood Centre and was sponsored by the NRMA and Transport NSW.

The initiative, titled "The Road Safety Rap!" is a short instructional film and a series of three 30 second television commercials targeted at senior members of the community. In the Blue Mountains, Senior Citizens crossing the road represent one of the highest accident statistics.

The students from Mt Victoria Public School wrote performed and recorded a road safety song that instructs people on the correct way to cross the road in a light hearted and catchy way.

The students from Lithgow High School made a music video and a short film and three commercials using the song and the Mt Vic Students as actors.

Lithgow High School – Promoting Excellence In A Caring Educational Environment 12

The students were also mentored and assisted in the process by local actor Joanne Samuels who is an Australian legend of the Film industry, most famous for playing the wife of Mad Max Rotansky in the Mad Max film series.

They were also mentored by Stephen Davies a local writer, movie producer and actor well known for roles in the recent film, My Pet Dinosaur, The Castle and Peter Jacksons King Kong.

Filming took place at Lithgow High School.

The commercials will be featured before the start of movies at Mt Vic Flicks and Glenbrook Cinema and other cinemas around the area.

The event was attended by Mt Victoria Public school, the public and was opened by local Mountains member Trish Doyle.

Everyone was given a choc top on entry and the screening also featured films from the Blue Shorts film Festival that also had Lithgow High School Films in its collection.

Halloween

Students from Lithgow High School recently saw their film work upgraded to professional status when a film that they produced was commissioned by Lithgow Council to produce also became a television commercial.

The short film documenting last year’s Halloween Celebrations in Lithgow has been recut to become the official television commercial for the event.

This is to be screened nationally on many different networks this represents a major achievement for the students.

ABIGAIL’S COVEN

‘Abigail’s Coven’ was a huge success. Stage 5 Drama and myself could not have done it without the help and support of the families of the students and the teachers and staff at Lithgow High School. Thank you especially to Mr Jeffers who helped with the lighting, Mr George for the sound and Kylie Patterson in the print room. This was a very busy time in the school calendar year when HSC artworks and design works come out and we were also very fortunate that Mr Bawden and Mr Palmer were able to squeeze our play in between their marking time and space. Thanks also should go to the students who helped out in this play that were not even in the Stage 5 Drama class, like Ellie Thompson-Spillane, Alexa Burton, Darcie Daniel and Aminah Baker.

Many members of the audience stated that the hall seemed ‘very creepy’, with all the lights of, a candle lit runway and the haunting voice of Lana Del Ray’s music. As director it was my intention to create a dark mood as many of the themes in the play were quite negative, like death, lies and mass hysteria. I hope that the audience were able to see these negative effects and learn from them from this production.

We look forward to seeing you at the next production, which we hope will be a comedy!

PRESS CLUB

Last week I and the other members of Stage 5 Drama put on 3 shows of the play Abigail’s Coven. Working up to these exciting nights, we rehearsed all throughout the term, each person, including Ms. Cases, sacrificing their time to make Abigail’s Coven a reality. On the night of the play, all the cast was more excited than nervous; excited to show our family and friends the play, excited to be on the stage. We all enjoyed immersing ourselves into the characters with dark makeup and fake blood, and through this experience, we grew closer as a class, a cast, and a group of friends.

Thank you to Ms Cases, for her time and dedication to the play; we are truly blessed to have such wonderful teachers at LHS.

Year 7 Peer Support

Program Update

Last fortnight our Year 7 Peer Support Program focused on Healthy Friendships. Students identified and discussed the qualities they admire and value in their friendships and explore ways to promote these. Cyber safety was also explored with a focus on behaving responsibly and respectfully online. Our students then explored how online communication can seem faceless but have a dramatic effect on another person. 7T had an awesome Peer Support Lesson where they shared their experiences and discussing this important subject.

The other focus of this vital program was strengthening our connections. Students explored the importance of being encouraging, thankful and looking for opportunities to exercise kindness in everyday relationships. Students then led in discussion about behaving in a friendly manner towards one another while not having to be friends with everyone. Research supports the development of these important skills in building strong young people and thereby minimising unkind or bullying behaviours.

The 3 R’s, Respect, Responsibility and Review are discussed in the context of all students and staff playing a role in creating a safe and supportive school. Activities explore the emotions that are felt when people are disrespectful to students or their friends. Students brainstorm ways of responding to this disrespectful behaviour that will cool down and keep the 3 R’s in mind.

Research supports the influence that Bystanders and Upstanders can have on unkind or bullying behaviour. The activities in this module are designed to support students in their positive action to build strong connections and relationships across school and minimise unkind behaviours.

Lithgow High School held its annual Traditional Indigenous Games on Wednesday 23rd August. This is the fifth year this fantastic sporting event has been run and it is a great opportunity for students to learn about culture in a fun and competitive way. The games are traditional Indigenous Games that have been played in many different areas of Australia for thousands of years. The focus for this event is on student engagement, sportsmanship, fun and importantly, the heritage of the Individual Games.

These Games also promote inclusivity, both Indigenous and Non-Indigenous Students were invited to participate and over 50 students joined in the fun. Trained Indigenous leaders ran the event with assistance from Ms Kimber.

This year we played Gorri, a popular hunting target game; Badhang, a volleyball-like game where two students have to catch a ball in a towel (traditionally a cloak or mat) and 'throw' it back; Kalkadoon kee'an, an emu hunting game with foxtails; and Wana, a ball and stick game that traditionally used a digging stick. After the round robin, all the students participated in the ever-popular Buroinjin, or Aboriginal Football.

The Snake Team was victorious on the day and were awarded the Games Trophy at the NAIDOC Assembly. The trophy is a didgeridoo made by the BroSpeak Boys.

We would like to say a huge thankyou to Ms Kimber for her excellent organisation, the Games Leaders for running the Games and to all the Indigenous students who brought a friend and joined in so enthusiastically.

SPORT REPORT

U16s Girls Hockey

On Friday 25th August, the Lithgow High School Girls U16's Hockey Team travelled to Bathurst to compete in the Tom Kemp Cup. The girls played exceptionally well as a team and encouraged each other on and off the field. The girls showed great sportsmanship towards their other teammates and had a really fun day together.

Throughout the whole day, the girls played a total of 5 games with some being a little more challenging than others. The first game they played was the hardest of all, coming up against the strong Orange High School Team. The girls went down 2-0, but showed great determination throughout the game and played well as a team, considering it was their first game together. The second game they played was against Molong. This was the game they started to gel together as a team, and it showed when they beat Molong 4-2, this boosted the girl's confidence and they used every opportunity they were given to score. In game three the girls played against Bathurst High and although they drew 2-2, the team showed great skills and determination. For the last two games of the day, the girls played Parkes and Kelso High.

Their wins, draws and goals scored throughout the day put the them in second place and won runners up for the 2017 Tom Kemp Cup. A special mention to Kate Francis who did an amazing job in goals, after coming back after a very long injury and a big thank you to Miss Saladine for making it a very enjoyable, fun and memorable day, with some great games of hockey being played.

Boys Hockey

Unfortunately our Boys Hockey Team went down to Westfield Sports High 1-0 in a round of 16 games. The boys showed exceptional skills and athleticism but could not get that goal they deserved. I would like to thank and congratulate the services the Year 12 Students have given Hockey and Sport at LHS. I wish them all the best of luck in their sporting endeavours in the future.

Western Region Champions Our Boys and Girls Basketball Teams went away to West Wylong to compete.

The girl’s team played two games. The first against Dubbo South, which they won 26-21 and the second against Parkes winning convincingly 39-10.

Overall the girls had a very successful day and will now go on to the next stage.

The boy’s team also played two games, the first against Mudgee, which they won 50-34, and the second they sadly lost to West Wylong with a sore of 32-37. The boys still played two amazing games but unfortunately did not come out on top.

Both of our teams played exceptionally well and did our school proud.

Premier’s Reading Challenge

Students at Lithgow High are reading more now than ever before.

Reading has become a major focus at Lithgow High over the past two years and the results of this focus can be seen in our incredible completion rate of the 2016 NSW Premiers Reading Challenge. This year at Lithgow High, 234 students from Years 7 and 8 completed the challenge.

The benefits of being a reader have been extensively researched and reported but the one thing that we know and have seen demonstrated over the years at Lithgow High School is that if a young person is an avid reader they:

will have more superior grades

feel more confident at school

become a more empathetic person and have increase desirable life outcomes.

Reading benefits people of all ages. It can:

Help us talk about bigger issues

Make us think more deeply about other people’s feelings

Give us examples of resilience and how to overcome adversity

Provide the reader with a fresh perspective on issues and give them tools to cope

with difficult situations

Lithgow High School – Promoting Excellence In A Caring Educational Environment 23

Lithgow High School - how we promote reading 1. Encourage all Year 7 and 8 students to participate in the NSW Premier’s Reading

Challenge. This year 234 students from across these years completed the

challenge.

2. We have introduced a wide reading program where students in Year 7 and 8 visit

the Library for a lesson once every two weeks. During these times students are read

to by our Librarian, Mrs Cross from a variety of Fiction and Non-Fiction. Students

enjoy listening to the texts as we are aware at Lithgow High school that a student’s

reading level doesn’t catch up with their listening level until the end of Year 8. Thus

allowing students to listen to books that are from a higher reading level than they

are at, it stimulates their interest in future books to read. Students then participate

in regular silent reading.

3. The Lithgow High School Library has a physical library but has also moved into

Cyber Space with the addition of the Wheelers E-platform. Our Virtual School

Library currently houses 1300 e-books and is available to all students 24/7, free of

charge provided they have an internet connection.

Tri-Nations Mathletics

The inaugural Tri-Nations was an online Math’s competition run by Mathletics. It was contested by schools from Australia, New Zealand and South Africa. It involved earning participation points.

The Tri-Nations ran for one week, which involved engaging activities appropriate for all year levels. It was a great way to improve basic and more advanced fluency skills. Students earned 10 points per correct answer in the Curriculum Activities with a maximum of 300 points on any Individual Activity; 1 point for ever correct answer in Live Mathletics, with 2 points if they had selected the bonus level.

Lithgow High had students who competed in the competition. They worked hard for the week. Mathletics listed the top 50 in each year group. Final results in the Year 8 group were: Justice Dulay in 5th position - 79479, Andrei Falls in 15th position - 20310 Jacinta Arnott-Webb in 30th position – 11302.

Kyle Sheather got close to being in the top 50, just missing out by a few hundred points.

The winning student in year had earned 100 000 points. So our students have achieved excellent results to be in the top 50 students from Australia, New Zealand and South Africa.

Also achieving Gold level in Mathletics are: Ashley Robinson and Cloe Robinson

On Thursday the 7th September a number of different Universities, Colleges, TAFE, Apprenticeships Australia, ADF, local Industries, Australian Institute of Music and much more visited our school as part of the First Career’s Expo at Lithgow High School.

The Career’s Expo was a great opportunity for students in Years 9, 10, 11 and 12 to learn more about University life and what they might hope to do in the future. It gave everyone the opportunity to be involved, for free and without having to travel as we usually would have had to do attend similar events.

All the students involved learnt a lot and greatly enjoyed the experience. We hope the Careers Expo happens again in the future, as it was a valuable experience. Thank you to Mrs Hamment and her hard working team to make such a large-scale event possible helping to provide extra opportunities for the students of our school.

Year 12 Construction in Rescue Mode!

Lithgow High School Year 12 Construction students were recently given the opportunity to experience first-hand the Firefighting Techniques used to contain fires. Under the expert guidance of training officer Frank Plackson and training coordinator Brad Duggan at the excellent facilities of Lithgow Mines Rescue Station the students were able to complete their Work Health & Safety (WHS) Competency. The Construction students learnt through practical hands on experience how to control fires using a variety of fire extinguishers, and other firefighting equipment. This opportunity was only made possible to the students due to the generosity of the Lithgow Mine Rescue Station Manager Brian Kelly and the time and effort given by instructors Frank Plackson and Brad Duggan.

Seconds by Bryan Lee O'Malley

Bryan Lee O’Malley is a Canadian cartoonist most well-known for his series Scott Pilgrim Vs the World. His signature humour and clever fourth wall breaking makes his graphic novels a stand out example of the medium.

Unlike Bryan Lee O'Malley's previous protagonists, our main character main character Katie pretty much has her life together. Head chef of her own restaurant, well respected by her peers with a new business proposal in the future - she has it all.

However, Katie is prone to downright reckless behaviour, which leads to one of her co-workers being seriously injured. Katie gets a chance to go back in time, to change what happened but there are rules to be followed...

1. Write your mistake. 2. Ingest one mushroom.

3. Go to sleep. 4. Wake anew.

This gifts Katie with the incredible power to go back in time a right the wrongs of the past. However ancient forces dwell beneath this house and as Katie delves further and further into her past it quickly becomes clear that some rules should never be broken. It's not often that I read a graphic novel quite at the standard of ‘Seconds’ and to this day it remains one of my favourites. O’Malley’s clever and dark exploration of the human psyche combined with his signature humour makes for a really worthwhile read. On top of this the colour scheme and artwork of the books is really aesthetically pleasing and sets the tone fantastically. O'Malley's use of modern plotlines to explore ancient folklore and the unknown creates a unique experience that I believe everyone should read. I would recommend it to any fans of his previous work along with those who are looking to get into the graphic novel scene (or anyone really). I give it

Press Club Creative Writing I stepped out onto the cold, dead grass. It was so cold, and I could barely see anything. I could not believe we had to camp out in this dump. Of course, I had to look for firewood. As I walked away, it became quieter and quieter. I wish I had never had joined the Scouts. All you do is learn how to cook burnt damper and camp out in mud piles like this. At last it looked like I had enough twigs. I turned around and started to go back, but as I was walking, I had a feeling that I have not been here before. Slowly I started to worry and worry, I did not

want to be stuck out here. Panic was rushing all over me. Then I heard something that I wish I did not. It sounded like something demonic, but animal like. Then I saw it. I dropped the sticks and ran for my life. I could feel it chasing me. I didn’t want to look back, I didn’t want to die like this. I could not run anymore. All I could do was shut my eyes.

Breathing life into Science

As part of the Year 7 Science Course at Lithgow High Student’s, study the anatomy of humans. This study includes the circulatory, breathing and digestive systems. One of the great opportunities to show the organs in these systems comes when we are able to get some parts of animals from local butchers to dissect in class. Recently we were able to get some sheep’s plucks (heart lungs and liver) courtesy of Lithgow Free Range Meats. Having these specimens meant that students were able to look at the organs, feel the tissues, look inside the organs And, for a few “brave” students even inflate the sheep’s lungs. This has been a valuable learning experience for our students and we again thank Lithgow Free Range Meats for their support of our students learning.

Year 8 Drama Performance for Lithgow Primary School

Students in Year 8 Drama performed ‘Peggy the Pint Sized Pirate’. A children’s play about a pirate who is short but has big dreams! Year 5 and 6 students at Lithgow Primary School were engaged by Year 8’s action packed performance. Thank you to Stage 3 teachers and students for being a wonderful audience!! Great effort to the Year 8 Drama class as well, with their excellent skills in putting on this performance, with seven students absent from the class on the day, they were still able to put on an entertaining performance!

On Friday the 8th September, the Agriculture Department held a contest to find out how much Shaggy the sheep weighed, to raise money for next year’s Year 12 Formal. To enter the contest you paid $5.00 to take a guess. They made over $150.00 and Shaggy ended up weighing 89.2kg. The Year 11 Fundraising Team also organised a BBQ lunch to coincide with the shaggy weighing event!

Justice Dulay of Year 8, guessed closest to Shaggy’s weight, he received a Coles/Myer Giftcard. Thank you for all the people that participated, what an inventive way to raise funds for this worthy cause.

This Term, five, Year 9, students have enrolled in the Bronze Level of the Duke of Edinburgh International Award. They have all made a start on the skills unit by doing farming skills with Garry Roberts at Fernbrook Farmgate Meats in Marrangaroo.

They have also undertaken Cross Training at Anytime Fitness, once a week, for an hour. This program is being run through the Links to Learning Group. Students undertake the units in their own time after school and on weekends. We recently had a visit from the State Office Representative of Dukes, Paul Cunningham, he commented saying, "Great to meet with you and the students, they have made a positive start to the Award."

22nd September 1914 - German U-boat devastates British squadron

In the North Sea on September 22nd 1914, the German submarine U-9 sank three British cruisers, the Aboukir, the Hogue and the Cressy, in just over one hour. The one-sided battle on September 22nd which claimed three British Cruisers and the lives of 1,400 Sailors, alerted the British to the deadly effectiveness of the Submarine, which had been generally unrecognised up to that time. In the first few years of World War I, German U-boats took a terrible toll on Allied shipping. By 1917 however the continued unrestricted U-boat attacks on American vessels travelling to Britain prompted the previously neutral United States to declare war on Germany. The infusion of American Ships, Troops and Arms into World War I, as well as the economic support the U.S. supplied to the Allied powers, would eventually turn the tide of the war against Germany.

Western Sydney University inspires students to succeed with free HSC study sessions

Western Sydney University is inspiring students to unlock their potential by attending free HSC study sessions during the October School Holidays.

Facilitated by experienced HSC teachers and markers, students will have the opportunity to revise syllabus content and learn the study skills essential for maximising their HSC results.

The sessions will run from Wednesday 4th October to Friday 6th October, from 9:00am-3:30pm each day and will cover various subjects, including Standard and Advanced English, General and II Unit Mathematics, Biology, Chemistry and Business Studies.

Rob Cousins, Director of the RTO at Western Sydney University, is overseeing the initiative and said it was a great opportunity for students who want additional guidance and support before the HSC exams begin.

“The HSC is a really stressful time for students and it can feel overwhelming. Our free study sessions are designed with HSC students in mind,” said Rob Cousins. “The sessions are taught in a lecture format and our teachers tailor the content to areas that the students feel they need the most help with.”

Lithgow High School – Promoting Excellence In A Caring Educational Environment 46

Parents and Carers are welcome to come along at the end of the session to ask any questions and discuss strategies to reduce the anxiety that the HSC can bring.

The sessions will be held at the Lithgow Campus and lunch will be provided to students on the day.

Registrations for these sessions are now open and filling fast. Secure your spot.
