PROGRAMME NOTES

Ripples Clark Winslow

Ripples (1993) is a composition for solo clarinet and digital delay unit (which creates an echo), written for Paul Bendzsa. The composer v "The title refers to an image of the rippling effect obtained by dropping a pebble into still water, then dropping a few more at irregular inte and watching the way the ripples intersect and interact with one another."

Three Chambers (1991) Omari

Three Chambers was written in 1991 with financial assistance from the Ontario Arts Council Commissioning Program and derives its inspi from three Italian horror films. Tarantella is based upon Lamberto Bava's film 'Demons'. The kinetic energy which characterizes the 'us (so against them (the demons)' scenerio, which verges upon chaos and madness in the film, led me to select the highly kinetic tarantella dan structure. Raven in the Opera House is an illustration of a single scene from Daria Argento's film 'Opera'. Argento is a master of virtuoso movement, and in this scene the audience sees through the eyes of a raven as the bird dives, swoops and glides. Out of the Ashes Rises an takes as its inspiration one of the final scenes from Michele Soavi's 'Sect'. Common to many films of the Italian horror genre is the motif angel embodied in a heroine, who finally triumphs over evil at the end. In the final minutes of Sect, a fiery automobile accident occurs in we have given up the heroine for dead. Yet as the wreckage is extinguished, she rises from the carnage pure and unscathed.

In Memoriam Michael

Between 1985 and 1988 I lost my father, my grandmother and my mother. This has had a profound impact on my compositions. Part of the process for me has been directed to my writing, and many of my works since 1985 are reflections on death and life. In Memoriam is th in this series. While born from very personal circumstances, it is conceived more as a general expression of mourning and remembrance. It is in the form of a theme and variations. In Memoriam, originally for violin and piano, was commissioned by the Canadian Music Corn through a grant from the Newfoundland and Labrador Arts Council. This version for clarinet solo is dedicated to Etienne Lamaison.
