7th November 2021 (Year B)

Thirty-Second Sunday in Ordinary Time

A long held tradition in the Church is to remember the Holy Souls during the month of November. The remembrance book placed beside the Altar at Sts Peter and Paul’s with the Paschal Candle lit during Mass is a powerful sign to us of the prayerful respect and love we pay to the dead especially during this month. Please write the names of anyone you wish remembered at Mass.

In 2016 the Vatican issued an Instruction Ad resurgendum cum Christo. (The Resurrection of Christ) It caused a bit of a stir because it stated that just as we treat the bodies of the dead with respect so too we must also treat with respect the ashes, which are the mortal remains, of the dead. As you are aware some very unusual practices are now available including having uncle Harry compressed into a coloured stone to be worn on your finger! The Christian believes that our body is already a temple of the Holy Spirit and after death our remains await the resurrection on the last day.

Around 1963 the Church officially allowed cremation which was already practised in some parts of the Church. In the 1980s local parishes began the practice of providing a columbarium in or near the parish church. The word comes from columba, the Latin word for dove, since the niches resemble a dovecote. St Columba is usually depicted in art holding a dove! If anyone has visited the old churches overseas or even in older towns in Australia and tripped over grave stones in the churchyard you will quickly understand the natural progression of a columbarium near the church.

Sts Peter and Paul’s has a beautiful columbarium which is available to parishioners, their family members and friends of the parish. Here the remains of loved ones are held within the heart of the church and surrounded by prayer. For those who are interested I encourage you to contact the parish office for information that has recently been updated.

You may be aware that Fr Chris Obi, after serving the parish of Camp Hill as parish priest, is returning to Nigeria. On behalf of the Deanery I thank him for his years of service in the Archdiocese and wish him well in his ministry of priesthood as he returns home. Fr Dantus Thottathil, the new parish priest does not arrive until January and in the meantime I have been asked to be Administrator. It should not cause too many changes due to the very capable pastoral and administrative staff and the generosity of the retired priests who will preside at Masses and other Sacraments. This weekend I will be at Camp Hill and Fr Roger Burns will be here at Bulimba.

A sense of humour is a gift from God. Laughter unites us.

The Three Stooges are spending the night in a haunted house... and get up to their usual eye-poking, nyuk-nyuking, slapstick shenanigans. In the middle of the pie fight, a poltergeist appears. Curly throws a cream pie and it turns around in midair and smacks him right in the face! He turns to Moe and says, "Hey, I think that ghost must have been from Australia." "Oh yeah, why?" "Because it just threw a Boo-Meringue at me!"

During November a Book of Remembrance will be placed in the church for the names of those for whom we will pray. Please feel welcome to include the names of those you wish to be remembered at Mass during this month of

All Souls. The Paschal Candle will be placed beside the Book of Remembrance and will be lit during Mass.

INVITATION TO MINISTRY - as different forms of parish

leadership emerge it is important to realise that an active Parish Finance Council has for many years been a necessary element of responsible pastoral leadership. The roles and responsibilities of the Council are explained in the Code of Canon (Church) law. As a Parish we can be very grateful to those with different skills who have served us so well in the area of financial management. There are several positions on the Finance Council that should be filled a soon as possible. If you have an interest in this aspect of parish life please contact, [email protected] to discuss what is involved. It helps if you have some experience of financial decision making. Responsible and transparent stewardship of the resources generously provided to the parish is the central role of the Finance Council.

Please consider the invitation to this ministry seriously.

WELCOME to Fr Roger Burns who will be our celebrant for all Masses this weekend. We thank him for his kind assistance.
