17th October 2021 (Year B) Twenty-Ninth Sunday in Ordinary Time My thanks to all who were able to participate in the Holy Hour at Sts Peter and Paul’s which was held each day of the Assembly of the Plenary Council. This extended time of prayer before the Blessed Sacrament was an opportunity to support those who are representing us in the important listening and discussing which lie at the heart of the Plenary Council. It was also a time to experience our own direct participation in the Plenary Council journey. I am also aware that many people shared in this time by praying at home. *** As different forms of parish leadership emerge over these days it is important to realize that an active Parish Finance Council has for many years been a necessary element of responsible pastoral leadership. The roles and responsibilities of such a Council are explained in the Code of Canon (Church) law. As a Parish we can be very grateful to those with different skills and backgrounds who have served us so well in the area of financial management. There are several positions on the Finance Council that should be filled a soon as possible. I ask that if you have an interest in this aspect of parish life please contact me directly, [email protected] so that we can discuss what is involved. It helps if you have some experience of financial decision making but surely that includes most of us. Responsible and transparent stewardship of the resources generously provided to the parish is the central role of the Finance Council. Please consider the invitation to this ministry seriously. *** November is the month of Holy Souls and it is our tradition to remember those who have died in the celebration of the Eucharist. That opportunity will be provided again this year at Sts Peter and Paul’s. Some people also make a financial offering. If you are inclined to do so can I encourage you to take a brochure from the door of the church so that your offering can assist the priests of Africa. You can still list as many names as you wish here at Bulimba where they will be remembered at Mass, but I would encourage you to send any financial offering to the priests who need it more. Twenty-Ninth Sunday in Ordinary Time

My thanks to all who were able to participate in the Holy Hour at Sts Peter and Paul’s which was held each day of the Assembly of the Plenary Council. This extended time of prayer before the Blessed Sacrament was an opportunity to support those who are representing us in the important listening and discussing which lie at the heart of the Plenary Council. IN MEMORY - it is with great sadness we advise the passing of long time parishioner Mal Thomson, husband of Evelyn, who died suddenly on Monday morning. Mal was a great supporter of the Music Ministry within the parish and a loyal member of the St. Stephen’s Cathedral choir. A requiem Mass will be held in the church at 11am Wednesday 20 October. Due to COVID restrictions on funeral numbers, we ask parishioners to indicate their intention to attend by phoning the parish office.

A sense of humour is a gift from God. Laughter unites us.

Sometimes we just need to remember what the rules of life really are: You only need two tools: WD-40 and duct tape. If it doesn’t move and should, use the WD-40. If it shouldn’t move and does, use the duct tape!

PLENARY COUNCIL FIRST SESSION CONCLUDES Attached to this week’s emailed Newsletter is the official Concluding Statement of the Plenary Council. The statement outlines the major issues of

discussion and urges us, as the Church in Australia, to continue to call on the Spirit to guide the on-going discernment in the lead up to the second session of the Plenary Council in 2022. We were reminded of the prophetic words of Pope Francis which shaped the direction of the agenda and guided the discussions: I dream of a missionary option: that is, a missionary impulse capable of transforming everything so that the Church’s customs, ways of doing things, times and schedules, language and structures can be suitably channelled for the evangelisation of today’s world rather than for her self-preservation (Pope Francis). Let us pray that the Pope’s words are realised in the outcomes of this first session of the Plenary Council and in the continuing journey. ROSARY GROUP – will now be held on the first Saturday of each month in the Parish Hall at 5pm prior to Mass. Next date will be 6 November. Slideshow of images and reflections will help guide our prayer. Everyone (all ages are encouraged) are most

welcome. “For where two or three are gathered together in my name, there am I in the midst of them.” Matthew 18:19-20

GATHERING HYMN

A NEW COMMANDMENT

A new commandment I give unto you: That you love one another as I have loved you, That you love one another as I have loved you.

By this shall all know that you are my disciples: If you have love one for another.

By this shall all know that you are my disciples: If you have love one for another.

APOSTLES CREED

I believe in God, the Father almighty, Creator of heaven and earth, and in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, (all bow) born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died and was buried; he descended into hell; on the third day he rose again from the dead; he ascended into heaven, and is seated at the right hand of God the Father almighty; from there he will come to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and life everlasting. Amen

SANCTUS

Holy, holy, holy, Lord God of hosts, Heaven and earth are full of your glory Hosanna in the highest. Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord. Hosanna in the highest.

Save us, Saviour of the world, for by your Cross and Resurrection you have set us free.

LAMB OF GOD Lamb of God, you take away the sins of the world, have mercy on us. Lamb of God, you take away the sins of the world, have mercy on us. Lamb of God, you take away the sins of the world, grant us peace.

COMMUNION HYMN

A TRUSTING PSALM

CHORUS

Lord, let your mercy be on us As we place our trust in you.

The word of the Lord is faithfulness and love. His love can never be measured. His beauty is like nothing we have ever seen, So let us place our trust in him.

The word of the Lord means a patient, gentle God. His love can never grow weary. His mercy is as though our sins have never been, If we can place our trust in him.

The word of the Lord is fire burning strong. His love can never grow weary. He will seek and save the lost until we all return, So let us place our trust in him.

RECESSIONAL HYMN

SHOUT TO THE LORD

My Jesus, my Saviour, Lord, there is none like You; All of my days I want to praise the wonders of Your mighty love.

My comfort, my shelter, tower of refuge and strength; Let ev’ry breath, all that I am never cease to worship You.

Shout to the Lord, all the earth, let us sing. Power and majesty, praise to the King. Mountains bow down and the seas will roar at the sound of Your name.

I sing for joy at the work of Your hands, forever I’ll love You, forever I’ll stand, Nothing compares to the promise I have in You.
