Raiders earn silver medals at Science Olympics
Eight students from our school were very happy to go to Peace River on Saturday, February 24th to take part in the Association of Professional Engineers and Geoscientists of Alberta (APEGA) Science Olympics. An annual event, the Science Olympics challenge students to work as a team to solve practical problems using hands-on skills. The APEGA program is run in schools across the province as a way to interest students in science and engineering. The challenges change yearly, but the goal is to get students to think about practical problems and what solutions can be informed by scientific ways of thinking.
This year’s Jr. High challenges had students building spillways to minimize soil loss by erosion due to running water, and bridges to hold a maximum amount of weight across a span. Both challenges had students working within a materials budget as a way to promote critical thinking.
The senior high division had three challenges which required students to design models of slow release medications, car bumpers, and earthquake resistant structures. Again, students were regularly working within materials and time constraints to design a practical but effective solution with the materials at hand.
Teamwork was also a significant part of judging in all events and our students worked together well to earn silver in both of their respective divisions. Organizers were quick to commend our students on their respect for other competitors and organizers, as well as their general attitude and response to the challenges

put to them. We are very happy with the results and look forward to taking part in this event next year.
Congratulations to team members Donovan D., Marissa K., Russell R., Emily T., Justin W., Jes-sica W., Kelsey C. and [student protected by FOIPP].
Thank you to Mr. Andrew Bullen for organizing this activity and to Mr. Matt Taylor for assisting with supervision.
Thanks to a gold medal win at zones, our senior high boys curling team earned a spot in the provincial Alberta School Athletic Association tournament, which was held recently in St. Albert. They came away from the tournament with a 2-2 record. Congratulations to Max A., Kaleb Y., Robert A. and Sam S. on a great curling season! Thank you also to Mr. Da-vid Hyatt for coaching our team! Way to go RAIDERS!

On Thursday, February 15th, our school community got into the Olympic spirit by holding a spirit day! Students were divided into teams and competed in a variety of outdoor and indoor events, which included Prairie Luge, Snowshoe Relay, Indoor Curling and Science Olympics. In the library, participants had the chance to warm up, enjoy hot chocolate, and watch the 2018 Pyongchang Olympics on the big screen. The afternoon wrapped up with an awards ceremony in the gym and an “Olympic facts” Kahoot quiz.
A huge thanks goes out to all of the students who participated, the staff who ran events and supervised, and to Mr. Matt Taylor for organizing the event.

Paul Rowe celebrates Pink Shirt Day!
Paul Rowe celebrated Pink Shirt Day to spread kindness and raise awareness towards a safe and caring school community! Students wore their pink shirts to represent this cause and started the day with a pink pancake breakfast!
During our SOLE block assembly, all students who are new to our school were given a new pink shirt. Student organizers then gave a short presentation, followed by a team-building puzzle activity. Students were divided in to six groups, then each group was given an envelope of large, pink puzzle pieces. Each student was asked to write their own “Pink Day” message on a piece, then work with their group to build their pink shirt puzzle. Students came up with some great messages, including:
“Your value doesn’t decrease based on someone's inability to see your worth.”
“Be a FRUIT LOOP in a world full of Cheerios.”
After all groups had completed their puzzles, students returned to the gym to compete in an interactive Kahoot quiz.
Thank you to our student Pink Shirt Day committee for doing a great job: Lauren B., Sharman B., Rory G., Marissa K., Miranda L., Candyce N., Nelly P., and Samantha P.. Thank you also to staff advisor Mrs. Vikki Presakarchuk for coordinating the event.

Extra special thanks go out to:

STAT Safety Training for donating time and re-
sources to train our grade 10 students in First Aid!
Our Science Olympics teams for being great representatives for our school! Thank you also to staff coordinator Mr. Andrew Bullen and to Mr. Matt Taylor for supervising!
All of the students who exhibited great school spirit by participating in our school Winter Olympic Celebration! Thank you also to Mr. Matt Taylor for organizing the event and to all of the staff for helping out!
Our curling team for exhibiting sportsmanship and enthusiastically representing our school. Thank you also to Mr. David Hyatt for coaching and travelling with the team.
Our enthusiastic Pink Shirt Day committee for planning our assembly and activities! Thank you also to staff advisor Mrs. Vikki Presakarchuk!
The Manning RCMP and to Manning Victims Services for spending time building online awareness with our students.
We are lucky to be part of such an amazing school community!
RCMP presentations urge responsible online habits
Constable Matt Nyman of the Manning RCMP, and Pat Proskurniak, Program Manager of Manning Victim Services have been visiting classes in our school to spread awareness regarding the issues, and possible legal consequences, of sexting and bullying. Every high school class has now received this presentation, which encourages students to demonstrate responsible use of technology. Parents and guardians are encouraged to discuss these issues with their teens.
It is important for children to learn that they can influence their surroundings and have some control over things that happen to them. Here are some ways to develop this asset:.
Remind children they can control what they do and say but they cannot control what others do and say. Help children understand and accept this.
Give children time to be by themselves—this helps them learn more about their own interests and helps them become more self-reliant.
