ABOUTMELBOURNE,VICTORIA

Melbourne is the multicultural capital city of Victoria – home to people from 235 countries and regions. It has recently been rated the world’s most liveable city by the Economist Intelligence Unit for the sixth year in a row. Melbourne was also voted one of the best new cities for business by Fortune magazine, and is ranked the third most entrepreneurial city in the Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development.

Melbourne’s four million people enjoy an enviable lifestyle with outstanding arts, food and wine, shopping, and diverse sporting and leisure opportunities. Victoria, with a population 5.8 million, is the innovation and knowledge powerhouse of Australia.

Strong economic base

Victoria is open for business, with a long standing AAA credit rating from both Standard & Poor’s and Moody’s. While Victoria accounts for only three per cent of Australia’s land mass, it is responsible for 22 per cent of Australia’s economic activity.

Skilled, innovative and multicultural workforce

Victoria’s highly skilled multicultural workforce offers industry a mix of energy, creativity and ability and has driven years of growth and prosperity. The open exchange of ideas encouraged in Victoria’s world-class universities and research institutes provide well-qualified and highly-skilled graduates who foster innovation and creativity.

Victoria has a highly regarded government network of Technical and Further Education (TAFE) Institutes. Courses are designed with close involvement by industry and business. Students experience hands-on learning in up-to-date settings ranging from commercial kitchens and auto workshops to aviation and aerospace facilities.

World-class infrastructure

Victorian-based businesses are forging strong links with the global economy, supported by sophisticated transport infrastructure, including Australia’s largest 24-hour international airport and busiest container port.

Doing business in Victoria

With an open economy and low-barriers to entry, Victoria is one of the most supportive and efficient places in the world to start a new business. The State’s pro-business Government is committed to creating a business environment that supports innovation and growth by cutting taxes and red tape.

Trade and investment relationship between Victoria and the ASEAN region.

Combined, ASEAN is Victoria’s second largest goods export market with exports to the region of approximately A$4.1 billion (17 per cent of all Victoria’s goods exports) in 2013-14, with two-way merchandise trade worth A$17 billion in the same period. In fact, three of Victoria’s top 10 goods export destinations are ASEAN countries – Malaysia 7th, Singapore 8th and Indonesia 9th. Several prominent ASEAN companies currently operate in Victoria across a wide range of industries. Airline services from the region, including Malaysia Airways, Singapore Airways and AirAsia all have presence in Victoria. Companies focused on food and beverage and Information and Communication Technology (ICT) continue to strengthen ties with Victoria.

Melbourne, Victoria’s capital city, is the world’s most livable city - an accolade we have received from the Economist Intelligence Unit’s Global Liveability Index for the sixth year in a row. Making it the ideal city to host the 23rd ITS World Congress, with it’s theme of ITS - Enhancing Livable Cities and Communities. .

Melbourne has the nation’s fastest growing population. By 2050, Melbourne is expected to have a population of 8 million people and will overtake Sydney as Australia’s most populous city.

Much of this growth will occur around Melbourne’s outer edges. In contrast, most of Melbourne’s future jobs will be located in the inner city. This mismatch poses significant challenges for our transport systems, which connects people living in metropolitan growth suburbs with jobs in our central employment centres.

This growth and change will create a strong demand for travel. Currently, there are 13 million trips per day on Melbourne’s transport system. By 2031, the number of trips made in Melbourne every day is forecast to growby 18 per cent to 38 million trips per day. At the same time Victoria’s freight requirements are expected to quadruple, driven largely by population growth, but also by increasing export and interstate freight volumes. ITS technologies and the associated efficiency, reliability and safety benefits will be key to ensuring Victoria retains its status as Australia’s freight and logistics capital.

Our system will need to accommodate the daily movement of over a million people in and out of central Melbourne and facilitate the movement of a billion tonnes of freight each year. This is why, we’re actively planning for and managing Melbourne and Victoria’s future growth and liveability.

Advanced ITS will be key to delivering safer, more efficient and environmentally sustainable transport solutions to ensure Victoria remains a productive, prosperous and liveable State well into the future.

Here in Victoria, we are some of the most intensive users of technology and telecommunications in the world and have access to world class 3G and 4G mobile networks. This combined with Victoria’s growing reputation as one of the world’s most attractive destinations for digital tech investment puts us in prime position to develop, test and deploy a variety of innovative transport connectivity technologies.

Melbourne has a strong history of delivering great ITS technology. Melbourne was amongst the first cities in the world to introduce Multi-Lane Free Flow Tolling. Combined with our world leading Managed Motorway network this provides the backbone for efficiently moving people and goods across our network.

Melbourne also has the largest continually operating tram network in the world. Our tramTRACKER® app uses real-time information to determine the position of any tram on the network and uses this information to predict the arrival time of a tram. A convenient tool for the travelling public.

Victoria is a diverse, flexible and resilient economy that has a number of competitive advantages which can enable innovation in ITS. These include:

• World class industries• A multicultural population• A highly skilled workforce• Proximity to the fast growing Asian region• Good transport networks with well-connected cities

and regions• Access to productive agricultural land and energy

resources• High quality food security and manufacturing

Collaboration can provide a mechanism for local firms and international organisations to achieve things that would be impossible for them individually.

This directory showcases Victoria’s diverse and innovative transport technology solutions such as traffic software and communications, route planning and scheduling, supply chain management, telecommunications infrastructure and smart car technology.

ITS enabled solutions will help us meet future challenges and better connect Victoria – to markets, jobs, education and each other.

The ability to efficiently manage logistics is becoming a critical requirement of modern cities. The ability to replenish commercial facilities such as food outlets, shopping centers and activity hubs conflicts with other requirements such as reducing congestion and increasing city amenity.

These facilities have complex supply chain networks which include Suppliers, Carriers and Receivers but also introduces new members to this traditional community such as the receiving location management (or body corporate), road management organisations and the city itself.

MobileDOCK™ is designed to enable cities to manage these deliveries within the constraints of each supply chain. It is aimed at creating, managing executing appointments for commercial deliveries and services into specific delivery locations. Visibility of the booking and execution process is provided to all authorised participants in real time through mobile apps. For Smart Cities this process includes on street and off street docks/loading zones

CEOS is the creator and manufacturer of TIRTL vehicle detection products. Using a light-based sensor, TIRTL counts, classifies, determines the lane and measures the speed of vehicles. TIRTL is used for speed, red-light, and heavy vehicle enforcement, toll auditing, incident detection, over-height detection and traffic data analysis. Its non-invasive technique reduces installation time, maintenance and road repair costs.

Up to 30% of road fatalities are attributed to drowsy driving. Optalert is working towards reducing that figure.

Optalert’s scientifically-proven technology determines objectively when a drowsy-related incident is likely to occur and provides a user with data in real time to prevent accidents from happening. The key lies in Optalert’s patented Johns Drowsiness Scale (JDS™), a world-standard scale using data collected by a user’s eyelid movement, or blink, and provides a risk score between 0-10.

OMC International was established in 1987, by its Executive Director Dr Terry O’Brien (AM).
