TravestiesBy Tom Stoppard Directed by Lynne Parker
Rough Magic will also present Joyce in June: Dún Laoghaire Bloomsweek Sat 9 – Sat 16 JuneA week-long celebration of works of and inspired by James Joyce through readings, performances and talks. Details will be announced in April.
Following the hugely successful and popular Plaza Suite, Rough Magic are back at Pavilion Theatre with the delicious comedy Travesties by Tom Stoppard.
Best-known as the author of the Oscar-winning film Shakespeare in Love and the plays Rosencrantz and Guildenstern are Dead and Arcadia, Stoppard is at his “diabolically clever” best in this absurdly funny masterpiece featuring James Joyce, Vladimir Lenin and artist Tristan Tzara.
Zurich 1917: exiles take refuge from the Great War in neutral Switzerland. Joyce is writing Ulysses and Lenin is planning a revolution. Stoppard creates a brilliant fantasia around the real-life incident of Joyce deciding to stage Oscar Wilde’s The Importance of Being Earnest.
“A tinder-box of a play blazing with wit, irony, and yes, ideas. It is exhilarating, diabolically clever.” Time

“If your live music rations were limited to a single concert in the entire year, then you’d be either crazy or foolish if you didn’t pass that precious time in the company of Martin Hayes and Dennis Cahill.” Irish Times
Together they have garnered international renown for taking traditional music to the very edge of the genre, holding listeners spellbound with their slow-building, fiery performances. Martin Hayes has been an All-
Ireland fiddle champion six times over; he was awarded the prestigious 2008 Musician of the Year award from Ireland’s Irish language television TG4, and at the inaugural BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards. Dennis Cahill is a master guitarist, whose innovative accompaniment is acknowledged as being a major breakthrough for guitar in the Irish tradition.
“Exploring how we might metaphorically drown -- or play -- in everyday life, five dancers aged 11 to 70, move in the ambiguous zone between waving, drowning, childhood memories and the unexpected joys of domestic DIY” The Irish Independent
The living room strewn on the front garden for all to see… Five Ways to Drown looks into the interior of family life and exposes the sadness, the absurdity and the banality through vignettes of dance - theatre and installation.
In this public display of the private, the choreography of everyday life becomes extraordinary.
Winners of the Culture Ireland Touring Award in 2008 and listed in both The Sunday Times and the Irish Times as a cultural highlight in 2011 for their production of Bird with boy at Dublin’s Kilmainham Gaol.

The Love Hungry FarmerBy John B Keane
“Fiercely serious and bruisingly hilarious” New York Times
“Des Keogh is superb. A consummate actor wedded to a skilled raconteur, the wine he offers is vintage” Irish Times
Des Keogh, one of Ireland’s foremost actors and entertainers, returns with his hugely successful and award winning show The Love Hungry Farmer by John B Keane.
It tells the story of John Bosco McLane, a bachelor of ‘indeterminate’ age and according to his own assessment, ‘past his
best’ and evidently still a virgin. McLane’s amorous adventures range from the hilarious to the pitiful.
JOHN B KEANE ranks among the great Irish writers. His plays include SIVE, THE FIELD and BIG MAGGIE. His ‘Letters’ series of books were a spectacular success, with The Love Hungry Farmer being particularly outstanding.

By 17, Sam had taken up the banjo and fallen in love with free jazz, Miles Davis, early indie rock, drone minimalism, mountain ballads and Buster Keaton films. But it wasn’t until he moved to New York City in 2002 that he began to play and experience first-hand all of these other kinds of things.
Since then he has collaborated with a myriad of artists including Nico Muhly, Thomas Bartlett, Beth Orton, Shahzad Ismaily, Glen Hansard and Bill Frisell.

Set in Windsor in the 15th century, Verdi’s final opera Falstaff is a three act lyric comedy based on Shakespeare’s The Merry Wives of Windsor and Henry IV.
Equal parts orchestral virtuosity and riotously paced comedy, the opera is a perfect fusion of renaissance realism and light-hearted fantasy.
Coming this September…
