New Year’s Resolutions!By: Cammie S.

New Year, New You! I have heard it a dozen times this year alone. New Year’s Resolutions do not have to be a bad thing. I know, I know people say, “You’re never going to stick

with it!” However, think about if you did. People all over the world have different goals and are making them happen right now. Why can’t you? If you really want to achieve your goal this year whether it is to get those rocking abs you have always wanted, or to just overall be healthier then take small steps at first. You do not need to rush into it and set some ridiculous goal you can never accom-plish. Do something that is not crazy to do, but something you know you can accomplish and then add to that. Overall, do not worry about trying to change yourself, but trying to overall better yourself for a bright, new, and exciting journeys. It’s not too late either!

VEX Kalahari TripBy: Lilly T. and Averi S.

On January 19th at 3:00 p.m., North Union Middle School’s robotics team left for our trip to Kalahari . After an exciting (three-hour) bus ride, we arrived.

On Friday, we checked in , got our robots inspected, pre-pared for the next day and headed to the waterpark. The next morning, the teams gathered and listened to the open-ing ceremony (which included a wondrous parade of the teams) then , we started the competition .Throughout the competition , all of our teams competed and did their best. The competition was a two-day event. On both days (mostly the first) we competed in the qualification matches. The second day, we had the last of the qualifica-tion matches, the finals tournament and the team awards. In addition to getting design interviews, certain teams from North Union participated in an interview which further prepared us for other interviews and polished our social skills. Lastly, a few teams from North Union High School won the finals tournament, and the Delta Force team quali-fied for World’s!In conclusion , our North Union teams did a great job of representing our school and we all did a great job and tried our best. We hope to see you at the next, home VEX compe-tition on Saturday, February Third, at North Union High School .

By: Kayleigh L Sleep has been not only a medical mystery but a scientific mystery as well. We understand that it gives us energy to the body but why does it do so much to the brain? One of the biggest things scien-tists want to know in particular is why animals need to rest their head. Animals spend so much time sleeping when it comes to hibernation or even just quick snooze animals can spend eighteen hours a day sleep-ing. When an animal sleeps, there brain can do amazing things, “The popular belief is that resting rids brain cells of toxins, helps consolidate fresh memories, and prepares the mind for a new day of learning.” Re-cent studies show that even the Brainless Jellyfish sleep! The Brainless Jellyfish is exactly what you think it is a Brain-less Jellyfish and it is definitely a living miracle so scientist began their experiments, “Ravi Nath, Michael Abrams, and Claire Bedbrook began by populating a home aquarium with 23 specimens of the Cassiopeia jellyfish. The largely immobile creatures spend their lives on the sea-bed, or clinging to other surfaces, with their stinging tentacles facing upwards to catch any unsuspecting prey that swims past. The research-ers, who used cameras to record the movement of the jellyfish for six days and nights, observed that the animals were 30 percent less active at night. They not only pulsated less frequently, but also underwent pe-riods of between 10 to 20 seconds of no movement at all.” So how does that effect this affect us? This shows that snoozing without a brain is very much possible and that sleep is not just about the mind but is very much about our bodies! Ohio Sirens -How they protect us-Article By: Max C. Research By: Mitchell M.

Sirens are a wonderful, yet powerful thing. They protect us every day. The sirens help by giving a load blast that could possibly, but not always, mean danger. You may pass by these noise makers without a second thought, but tornado sirens are there. Some of the companies that make warning sirens are Federal signal, American Signal, Sentry and Whelen ( the underdog). These siren manufacturers are about 4/10 companies worldwide that produce mass notification sirens. Here are some of the most common sirens produced by these companies. Chocolate Mint Day By: Lilly T. and Cammie S.

Have you ever wondered where the combination of mint and chocolate came from? Maybe you even wondered who created this wonderful combination. In addition to the fascination with this combination, a whole day has been dedicated to it. On Monday, February Nineteenth, many people throughout the U.S celebrate the wonderful combination of mint chocolate. All over the world people love mint and chocolate. In fact, 3% of all ice cream sold throughout the world (2000) was mint chocolate chip flavored. Later, in 2017, mint chocolate chip ice cream was ranked fourth in most popu-lar flavor. It’s popularity lead to other chocolate mint dessert combinations. Before chocolate and mint became a popular dessert combination, the Mayans, and Aztecs used chocolate for medicinal purposes. Mint was later paired with chocolate to add to it’s medicinal properties. Into the more recent past, Huyler’s in New York became one of the most mass producing mint and chocolate business. Finally, we can conclude that chocolate and mint are quite the ancient pair. From medicinal purposes to the plesure of eating it as a dessert, many people encourage you to celebrate the combination of chocolate and mint this February. Art ClubBy: Audrey F.

In art club this week, we are creating our own paintings with a renaissance or cubism twist! On Tuesday’s and Thursday’s, we stretched and made our own canvasses

by gluing our frame together. Then, stapling our cloth to the frame. This stapling called for teamwork among the group and it sure came through, as others were glad to help members make their canvas. It is exciting to see so many different people bond over their love of art. Mem-bers include Lilly T., Audrey F., Kayleigh L., Cammie S., Averi S., Amanda A., Audrey C., Reagan F., Ben D., Mitch-ell M., Jonah T., Omi A., Autumn B., Coulter D., and Amber H. In the future, we are planning to make our own T-shirts and our own pottery on the pottery wheel.

Orange Crush 6th Grade Girls Bball By Audrey B.The 6th grade girls basketball team is currently playing in the Tri-County League. The coaches of the team are Justin Price and Andy Wedding. There are so many girls that played this year, the coaches had to split them into two teams to play in the league. There is a Black team and White team. The players on the black team are Abbey P, Layni W, Zoe W, Chloe H, Reese D, Savannah Q, Lindsay W., Anna C, and Kurynn O. The white team includes Audrey B, Samantha G, Hallie H, Cenlee H, Sienna B, Grace L, Ryleigh R, and Kenadi M. We also have an orange team that plays in tournaments. Our coaches decide to bring at least 11 girls from either the black or white team. The orange team depends on who is on the roaster because the coaches decide who they want to come and play that weekend on that team. Positions in a basketball team are very important. The point guard is the probably the most important position because of the fact that they are the players who bring the ball up the floor to make a play to score. A guard is a player who runs the wing spot, which is near the 3 point line in the corner of the half court line. A post is a player who runs the block spot, ( usually post are tall) to post up and shoot. The black team point guards are usually Abbey P., and Zoe W. Posts are Reese D, Kurryn O, Chloe H, and Layni W. The guards are Lindsay W, Savannah Q, and Anna C. For the white team the points guards are Audrey B and Hallie H. Post are Sienna B, Ryleigh R, Grace L, and Kenadi M. The guards are Samantha G and Cenlee H. Our team works hard and plays hard.

Orange Crush Interview of Coaches Q: Is it fun teaching young students the premises of basketball and interacting with kids? A: From Justin Price Yes, I absolutely love teaching kids the game of basketball. I love seeing them develop their skills and have success throughout their careers.A: From Andy Wedding Yes, because it was a sport I enjoyed growing up, and I wanted to pass it to the next generation.

Q: Do you think it is important for kids to be apart of a team/sport? A: From Justin PriceTeam sports teach athletes so many valuable lessons that are important in their work life and adult life. I absolutely think team sports are important.A: From Andy Wedding Yes, because jobs in the real world require an office of teamwork, and it teaches you to interact with other people.

Q: Do you see basketball as a very teaching, helpful, interactive, and intelligent sport that will help kids with different abilities/skills? A:From Justin PriceOf course. In basketball, like any other sport, you are faced with constant challenges, obstacles, and opportunities to use and develop a player’s character.A: From Andy WeddingYes, because if you are a tall person you would be a good rebounder, and a quick per-son would be better at stealing the ball and handling it.

Q: Have you coached any other sports than basketball? If so how many years have you coached the sport and did you enjoy it? A: From Justin Price I’ve coached t-ball and soccer, along with basketball. This was mostly for my own chil-dren. I coached soccer for a couple seasons and t-ball for just one. I’ve also coached slow pitch softball. I really enjoyed coaching soccer and wish it was available at North Union. I think its a fantastic sport. Coaching t-ball was terrible.A: From Andy Wedding I have coached travel softball for 8 years, and yes I enjoyed it.

Q: Have you enjoyed coaching the girls throughout the season? Also, is it difficult to organize, and deal with the stress of coaching? A: From Justin Price I’ve been blessed with fantastic group of girls who work hard, listen, and have had a lot of success on the court. It’s been really fun the last 4 years. I enjoy the organizing aspect of coaching. The most stressful part for me is dealing with terrible refs.A: Andy Wedding Yes I have enjoyed coaching the girls and teaching them, and having another career is difficult getting to all practices.

DIY Lava LampBy: Jonah T.

Step One: Gather all of your items. You will need paint-four different colors, cotton balls, a mason jar, and a array of glitter. (In addition to these materials, you will also need four cups, water, and some-

thing to stir with.)

Step Two: Take out your four cups and pour an equal amount of water in each. You only need enough to water down the paint.

Step Three: Pour each paint color into each cup, make sure to not mix the paints.

Step Four: Stir paint in each cup until it is mixed with the water.

Step Five: Take the some cotton balls and arange them at the bottom of the mason jar.(Stretch ou the cotton balls before put-

ting them in the jar)

Step Six: Equally distribute your glitter throughout the mason jar.

Step Seven: Poor each cup of your watered-down paint on the cotton balls, one at a time.

(If the cotton balls just collapse, add more water; this means the paint is to

thick)

Step Eight: Once you’ve finished the last color, make sure the lid is on tight. Then feel free to play with it as much as you like.

CLASS Of 2024 Halfway DayWritten by: Haley J. And Hannah C.

Halfway day is an annual celebration done at the middle school celebrating what we have achieved and what we still have to achieve.. This year, we celebrated with games, donuts, and a half of a diploma.. We had a great time with the high schoolers and relay races. It was a good time to have fun with your friends and to get to know the high schoolers. We started of the morning by getting juice and doughnuts and listing to superintendent baire and Mr. Burgraff talk and tell us about our future and how we need to prepare, because before we know it, it will be here. Once we finished that we went to our first period class and did some things in there after that we went to all of our classes to do different and fun things. Once we got to lunch we had catering!! We go to eat with the high schoolers too. Then when lunch was over we got to go into the gym and do games and relay races. We hope halfway day will be as good for next year's students as it was for us.

The class of 2024 has 108 students with 50 boys and 58 girls. It is forcasted that in this year of graduation there will be a manned mission to Mars, cost of solar panels will drop from between $2 and $3 per watt to .90, and the Olympics in Paris!

Sugar Cookies for What ever you Want!Gracie L. & Ambriona M. You can cut these out into any shape you want. It doesn’t have to be hearts for Valentines, but it can be. Afterall, February is ‘Mend a Broken Heart’ Month! You can cut those heart shaped cook-ies and then to get frustration out you can use a tool to make them look like broken hearts and put words on them like the picture shows. Maybe that would help with a healing process and get out some frustration. Ingredients: 1 egg 1 stick of butter (melted) , Sugar cookie mix Directions: Add the egg and melted butter stick. Stir Once stirred -- add half of the cookie mix & stir again. Add the rest of the cookie mix and stir until doughy texture. Have a flat surface and add flour to that surface Roll out the dough until half inch. Use a heart shaped cookie cutter (or any) and cut dough Now put cookies in the oven for 5-7 minutes at 375 degrees. Wait for cookies to cool then ice and decorate however you would want.

SpaceX Update: By Hunter B. The NUMS BBall teams have launched into great tournament action and Elon Musk had a great launch last week. In coming editions, Hunter will keep us up-to-date on this activity. Musk/SpaceX has the goal for us to be able to travel and possibly live on Mars. Spacex had a successful test launch of their new rocket, The falcon heavy. The Falcon Heavy is Essentially Three first stages of a falcon strapped togeth-er. The first stage has a total of 27 merlin engines. Once the three cores have almost run out of fuel they seperate to be able to land and then be reused. The second stage then separates and keeps the payload on target. Now for the mission, The mission was a test flight for the falcon heavy. The payload was a cherry red tesla roadster with a manikin wearing the SpaceX space suit given the nickname Starman. Starman and the tesla are going to be orbiting around the sun and occasionally passing near mars. The mission was a success. Star-man is now orbiting the sun. Nasa also named him a celestial object. CONGRATS to the Basketball Teams and to SpaceX.
