Living in California we have water regulations. Water is one of our scarce resources. Until we find a solution to this drought we should conserve water.

February 29th is an extra day everyone gets every four years. This year was a Leap year and on Monday, February 29th was everyone's extra day, until it happens again on February 29th, 2020. But why do we have a leap Year? What's the big deal of having an extra day every four years? Well it all started to the Gregorian calendar that connects with the solar system. Our Calendar has 365 days in a year because that's how long the earth takes to orbit around the Sun. But in reality it takes the Earth about 365 ¼ days (technically 365.24219) to circle all around the Sun. This difference was noticed awhile back. In 45 B.C. a decree by Julius Caesar began the idea of having an extra day every four years. But by 1582 A.D. that idea by the Julian calendar was adding up to 10 extra days so Pope Gregory XIII created his own calendar to even it all out. He named it a “Leap Year” and made it set on February 29th as the official day. So now the Leap Year only happens when the year is divisible by four, and only century years that are evenly divided by 400.

Los Banos Swim Team By: Mikayla Akers

On Friday, our Los Banos Tigers were scheduled to host a swim meet against Ceres. As other games were, the meet was canceled due to the poor weather. This meet was going to be the Tigers first meet of the season. “It made me so upset.” says varsity swimmer, Savannah Graham, “I just wanted to get it over with, rather than building up more nerves.” Even though this was an upset, Savannah says she feels much more confident about this season than last years. The meet has not yet been rescheduled, but it should be soon. The next meet they have on their schedule is on March 11 in Atwater. Go support your Los Banos Tigers Swim Team!

College or Not? Written By: Lizeth Sanchez

I asked students around school if they were planning on either

going to college or wait until they know what they want to major

in. The results showed that the majority of students I asked

wanted to go to college after high school than the few people who

did not want to. 88.1% of people who said that going to college

would actually help them because they think it would help them

find the job they want and have a steady career and be financially

secure. But the other 11.9% who do not want to go to college

after high school either don't know for sure what they want to do

yet so it would be pointless to spend so much money on a major

you might not be happy with for the rest of their lives. !"##$%$&"'&(")*

The Origin of March By: Maria Gonzalez The name of March originally comes from Latin Martius. It is said that it is named for the Roman god of wars, Mars. This was the time of year to resume military campaigns that had been interrupted by winter. Also, this is the first month of the Roman year. International Women’s Day also falls on March eighth; it is a global day celebrating the economic, political, and social achievements of women's past, present and future. In China, Russia, Vietnam, and Bulgaria International Women’s Day is a holiday. March was the original beginning of the year; it is also one of the seven months that has thirty-one days. The first issue of U.S. government paper occurred as $5, $10, and $20 bills began circulation. The Salvation Army was actually founded in the United States on March 10, 1880. March’s historical names are, Roman: Martius, Saxon: Hrethmonath, and Germanic: Lenz-mond (Springtime month). Britain had used March 25 as the beginning of their New Year until 1752. This is also the time that animals start to wake up from hibernation. ‘March Madness’ is actually a basketball tournament played by the NCAA. There are many historical events in March and events that go on. What is your favorite thing about March?

College Highlights: University of Texas at Austin By: Kelsey Biggs

University of Texas at Austin is home of the Longhorns. Located in Austin, Texas, there are a handful of things to keep you occupied while going to college here. Austin is known for two-steppin’, yummy southern food, and of course it’s beautiful university in the heart of Austin.

This outstanding university is known for their magnificent major programs. The most popular majors include: Business/Marketing, Communications/Journalism, Engineering, and Social Sciences. They offer Certificate, Bachelor, Master, and Doctoral degrees. This campus is primarily a residential campus, and always has friendly students around. Also, the Longhorns are very well known for their elite sporting teams. Football, Basketball, and Baseball are there most popular sporting teams.

Some prestigious people have also attended this university. Lady Laura Bush of ‘73 received an MLS from Austin, and also major league baseball player Roger Clemens attended. If you love the south, and Texas itself, then consider applying to University of Texas at Austin.

Police Dispatcher Honored By, Miguel Mejia At the Los Banos Police Department, there is a woman named Sarah Sanchez, who is the dispatcher there at the department. Very determined woman within her job to do what she has to do. According to a facebook page, The Los Banos Watch Dogs, by the people, Sarah is honored for her work. She must be fast at responding, very helpful to the citizens of Los Banos, and is they’re doing her job how she is supposed to. This is very good and important of her taking this job and helping the people of this town. It is very helpful and good to have someone who is doing their job good and correctly to help keep people safe. As an emergency dispatcher, I am sure there are times where things can get scary. Sarah Sanchez does what she has to do to give the best responces or best advice to help. This is something that is good for the people who live here in this town because under any circumstance they have someone in the right spot to get help. Every job at the police department has its importance and they all someday will be revealed. As a teen of this town, I know that there are very many crimes in this town. This woman may have a hard job, or hard time doing what she has to do. Even if that was the case, Sarah, the LBPD emergency dispatcher, manages to do a great job, at her job. This makes me feel good because I know if I do have to call, I will get help. Hopefully I will not have to do so, and I can remain safe without any health or crime interruptions. I would like to give a thank you to Sarah Sanchez.

Favorite Foods

By: Rachel Gokay Doesn’t everybody love food? If you don’t, well you need it to survive, so you might as well have a favorite one! I asked around the sophomore and senior classes about their favorite food and surprisingly, most of them were the same!

Sophomores: 200 Seniors: 100

Burritos: 21 Burritos: 15

Tacos: 98 Hamburgers: 23

Fries: 40 Tamales: 16

Pizza: 41 Pizza: 46

It seems that everybody loves burritos and pizza! Although they don’t make a good food combined, they sure are tasty. My favorite food is fried okra because it’s salty and crunchy. What’s yours?

Police surround apartment building in Los Banos; one arrested By Jesse Munguia

Law enforcement officers arrested a man in Los Banos on suspicion of robbery after authorities surrounded a downtown apartment building Tuesday. The robbery was reported around 8:45 a.m. Tuesday in the Mount Bullion area of Mariposa County. Deputies said several men entered a home armed with a shotgun and a handgun. The thieves tied up the victims, including three children, and stole about 25 pounds of marijuana buds, cash and guns, deputies said Wednesday in a news release. Dustin was identified as a suspect and Mariposa deputies issued an alert to neighboring communities, including Los Banos, where he was spotted several hours later.

Officers, Merced County sheriff’s deputies and agents with the Merced County anti-gang unit surrounded the apartments above the Lucky Strike Club in the 500 block of I Street in Los Banos.

Authorities were called to the scene after officers spotted a stolen vehicle about 12:30 p.m., Cmdr. Jason Hedden said.

Hedden said Los Banos police would continue to assist Mariposa deputies in the ongoing investigation. Dustin was booked into the Mariposa County Jail on suspicion of robbery, kidnapping a burglary. Buddy Valentino Dustin, 25, was arrested on a warrant charging him with robbery in Mariposa County, police Sgt.

Justin Melden confirmed. The Sacramento man has a record of grand theft in 2014 and probation violation in July, according to Merced County records.

Melden declined to comment on details of the robbery in Mariposa County, referring questions to authorities there. The Mariposa County Sheriff’s Office did not respond to requests for comment Tuesday.

Why be Ordinary?

By, Avrie Haumea

Why does humanity choose ordinary? Opportunities are endless in our diverse world. Why do people strive for the norm? Each of our puzzles fit together differently. EXPRESS it! Everyone at LBHS should format goals. Not any goals, but high, extreme, and outrageous goals. Run a risk, try something new. Assess goals far from reach. Cause you to jerk a muscle, perhaps tweak a tendon. Hard work receives benefits. Work to mean something. Don’t be mediocre, be BOLD. Don’t be ordinary, be EXTRAordinay.

TigerPlayList By Brianna LaDuca For this Tiger PlayList I

decided to look into the past and see what people's favorite Disney Song was, or still is, from when they were younger.

William Prieto liked the

song Circle of Life from the Lion King.

Whereas, Allyson Weitman still loves the song Once Upon a Dream from Sleeping Beauty, because “If I ever work at Disneyland then I would want to Princes Aurora.” Other Favorite Childhood Disney Songs are:

1. Reflection from Mulan. 2. Barenesesity from Jungle

Book. 3. Trashing the Camp from

Tarzan. 4. Bippity Boppity Boo from

Cinderella. 5. Under the Sea from The

Little Mermaid.

That is just the top 5 according to students and staff at this school. What’s your favorite Childhood Disney Song? I know I have to agree with top number 3, Trashing the Camp from Tarzan, no words, all sound.

Weeknight Enchiladas

Easy Ways To Earn Money for Teens By: Megan Hernandez

1. Work for yourself 2. Consider the basics like walking dogs, wash

cars, mow lawns, etc. 3. Negotiate fees with your parents and do

extra chores around the house besides what you’re already asked

4. Sell items at a yard sale 5. Advertise your services: like babysitting or

pet sitting. 6. Make and gather crafts to sell 7. Participate in local studies 8. Make a savings goal and start saving!!!

INGREDIENTS SAUCE 2 Tbsp vegetable or canola oil 2 Tbsp chili powder 2 Tbsp flour 2 cups water 3oz. tomato paste ½ tsp cumin ½ tsp garlic powder ¼ tsp cayenne pepper ¾ tsp salt ENCHILADAS 16 small corn tortillas 4 cups refried beans 8oz. Pepper Jack, shredded (2 cups) ½ large avocado, ¼ bunch cilantro (or green onions), roughly chopped INSTRUCTIONS 1. Begin by making the sauce. In a small saucepot, combine the chili powder, flour, and oil. Heat over a medium flame, while stirring, for one to two minutes to toast the spices and flour. Whisk in the water, tomato paste, cumin, garlic powder, and cayenne pepper. Allow the mixture to come

to a simmer, at which point it will thicken. Once thick enough to coat a spoon, taste and add salt as needed (1/2 to ¾ tsp). Set the sauce aside. (Step by step photos here) 2. Toast the tortillas in a dry skillet over medium flame until they are just flecked with brown on each side. The tortillas should be slightly more firm, but still pliable enough to roll. Stack the tortillas on a clean plate as they come out of the skillet. 3. Prepare a casserole dish by coating with non-stick spray then spread a layer of enchilada sauce over the bottom (1/2 to 1 cup). Preheat the oven to 350 degrees. 4. Add about ¼ cup of refried beans to each tortilla, plus a small pinch of shredded cheese. Roll the tortilla tightly around the beans and cheese, then place seam side down in the casserole dish. Continue until all of the tortillas are filled. Pour another ½ to 1 cup enchilada sauce over the rolled enchiladas in the dish, leaving some of the edges exposed so they can become brown and crispy. Top with the remaining shredded cheese. 5. Bake the casserole in the oven for 25-30 minutes or until the sauce is thick and bubbly around the edges and the center is heated through. Top with thin slices of avocado and chopped cilantro leaves (or sliced green onions). Mediterranean Quesadillas Ingredients 10 (8 inch) flour tortillas 1 lb. frozen chopped spinach 1 small red onion ½ (12 oz.) jar roasted red peppers

⅓ (9.5 oz) jar kalamata olives handful fresh parsley (optional) 4 oz. feta cheese, crumbled 8 oz. shredded mozzarella 1 tsp dried oregano Instructions 1. Thaw the frozen spinach and then place in a colander. Press the spinach against the sides of the colander to squeeze out as much moisture as possible. Place the drained spinach in a large bowl. 2. Cut the red onion into very thin slices. Cut the roasted red pepper into small strips, roughly chop the kalamata olives, and roughly chop the parsley. Place all four ingredients in the bowl with the spinach. 3. To the bowl also add the oregano, crumbled feta, and shredded mozzarella. Stir very well until everything is evenly distributed. 4. Divide the filling among all ten tortillas, spooning it into one half and then folding the bare half over top (I used roughly ¾ cup per tortilla). Heat a non-stick skillet over medium to medium/low heat. Cook the quesadillas on each side until the outside is golden brown and crispy and the cheese inside has melted.
