anuary 1, 2003, I made two promises. First,

your PHS/SPCA would never again put to

grow our programs so that we could humanely

care for those dogs and cats who might end up

with us for months or even longer.

We’ve honored that promise, and will continue to

do so forever.

Second, I promised that PHS/SPCA would strive

each year to expand the Hope Program: that

we would now turn our efforts and energy to

making well and then rehoming ever increasing

numbers of those dogs and cats who come to us

physically unhealthy and not behaviorally sound.

That we would continue to accept but rededicate

our efforts to help those animals not accepted by

most so-called “no kill” shelters.

That promise, too, has been kept. This past year,

in fact, we found homes for approximately 200

Hope Program animals every month. That is

nothing short of amazing.

Towards the end of last year, I lost one of my

own dogs: Archie, one of our Hope Program

graduates. Archie came to our shelter as a stray

with an unknown but obviously pretty horrific

story. So frightened of people, he reacted by

trying to bite (the canine equivalent of a strong

offense is the best defense). Our behavior team

saw something in him that said, over time, he

could be helped. They worked hard, for months…

be guaranteed a home. I further committed to

…and then, for years, my family benefitted from

their work. Archie grew to be a love muffin, 80

pounds of silly sweetness who loved nothing

more than to help us raise other frightened pets.

My family (people, dogs, cats) sorely misses our

Archie. And my family will be forever grateful

to you, the people who contribute to help

PHS/SPCA help the animals like him. Your

kindness means that I get to keep both those

promises I made back in 2003.

program provides love and support with

Our teams, made up of handlers and their

thoroughly evaluated animals, visit hospitals,

nursing homes and other medical facilities

along with jails, adult daycare centers, and

even the airport. Paws for Tales, our reading

to dogs program, provides support to children

VolunteersVolunteers gave nearly 180,000 hours of their time, far surpassing last year’s previous record of 165,000. To better understand this total, it’s the equivalent of 86 full-time employees! Dogs vs Cats? Both received a ton of love and attention in 2015. Cats benefitted from 21,578 “TLC” sessions (grooming, play time, lap time and socializa-tion). Dogs, on the other paw, received more than

Animal Rescue & Cruelty InvestigationsIn 2015, we helped nearly 4,500 animals in harm’s way out in our community; this in-cludes stray dogs we rescued/secured, in-jured wildlife reported to us by Good Samari-tans and animals who found themselves in a variety of life-threatening situations. Sadly, calls about mistreated or abused animals don’t stop and come from all corners of our County and for all species. Fortunately, dona-tions allow us to fund positions to address this critical work. Our team relentlessly inves-tigated more than 500 cruelty cases. These included high-profile cases which eventually led to arrests.

Spay/NeuterThis work remains central to our mis-sion and essential toward our efforts to reduce companion animal overpopulation. Our Low-Cost Spay/Neuter Clinic at 12 Airport Blvd. in San Mateo and our mobile spay/neuter clinics, offering surgeries at no cost in se-lect areas, spayed or neutered 5,610 pets.

14,000 30-minute walks off site – a 41% increase over 2014! Some volunteers opted for roles where

they help us without interacting with animals. For example, they spent 7,980 hours at our Pick of the Litter secondhand store and a dozen or so volunteers donated more than 1,000 hours as greeters inside our Center for Compassion.

PENINSULA HUMANE SOCIETY & SPCA

Wildlife Care2015 saw a slight up-tick in sick, injured and orphaned wild-life requiring our re-habilitation services. These included owls, hawks, ducklings, songbirds, pelicans and other seabirds impacted by weath-er, and all our area’s mammals. For the year, we successfully rehabilitated a total of 1,363 wildlife.

AdoptionsWe rehomed 3,600 animals in 2015, making this the best year in Adoptions since 2010. Cats led the way, with 1,666 being placed into new loving homes. Dogs were right on their heels with 1,234. Hopping, slithering, crawling and flying behind were small com-panion animals, birds and reptiles, totalling 700 adoptions.

Humane EducationSince the 1960s, humane edu-cation has been an integral part of our work and mission. We reach children through a variety of offerings, including school presentations, center tours, Ani-mal Camp, shadow programs, an after-school Humane Help-ers program and birthday par-ties. In 2015, we reached a total of 2,465 children through these targeted efforts. Countless chil-dren visited our center as we’ve quickly become a fun destina-tion for families.

MILESTONEA number of employees celebrated 10-year anniversaries in 2015, bringing our total to 20 current staff who’ve reached this milestone. This is out-standing for a Bay Area nonprofit.

GIFTS OF STOCKGifts of stock offer two-fold savings. Donors pay no capital gains on the increased value of the appreciated stock and receive a tax deduction for the full market value at the time of the gift. Transferring is easy!

MATCHING GIFTSMany companies match (often double or even triple!) their employee’s charitable contributions. Simply check with your employer or Human Resources Department to see if they will match your gift. Visit our website for a partial list of participating employers.

MEMORIAL AND HONOR GIFTSMemorial gifts are a thoughtful way to honor the memory of a beloved pet or person. We send the family a notification card. If the donation is $150 or more, we will permanently display the deceased’s name on our Memorial Wall. You can also make gifts to honor someone during their lifetime. Birthdays, holidays, anniversaries, weddings, retirements and “thinking of you” occasions are some events you might consider for an honor gift.

MONTHLY GIVING...FAITHFUL FRIENDS You can set up automatic payments for credit cards and electronic bank transfers, or we can mail you envelopes for the year if you’d like to write checks. After the end of the year we send a summary letter for your records, so you don’t have to keep track of individual letters for each donation. You can now sign up at phs-spca.org/monthly.

SECONDHAND CHIC TEA & FASHION SHOW BENEFITTING HOPE PROGRAM

S econdhand Chic, our annual event which

showcases fashions from PHS/SPCA’s

fashion show. Guests

were tempted to buy

the fashions right off the

models’ backs – some

did, though after they

changed! The event also

boasted an afternoon

tea accompanied by

sweet and savory treats,

an outside bazaar filled

with designer treasurers

and silent auction

items. All articles were

provided by Pick of

the Litter, PHS/SPCA’s

resale shop located on

Chula Vista Avenue, just

off Broadway in Burlingame. The “Pick” also

provided individual and unique tea cups, pots

and saucers for partygoers to take home after

the show.

These rewarding opportunities blend service with learning. A recent intern said this: “Being a Wildlife intern was an enlightening and educational adventure! I learned about the natural history of Bay Area wildlife along with how to feed and care for these animals in a medical set-ting. I was provided with reading materials from topics such as analyzing blood to wound care manage-ment to identifying common diseases found in sick wildlife.
