Internships, in particular, have come under recent scrutiny amid concerns of exploitation. But APM College of Business and Communication careers and industry consultant David Medhurst says work experience can be immensely valuable. “Not only does (a cadetship or internship) bring course material to life but they also provide students with exposure to soft skills, such as workplace communication and team work, often not explicitly taught at many institutions,’’ he says. “They ensure that a student graduates with valuable, industry-relevant work experience on their CV – which can put them ahead of the pack.’’ An internship generally is an unpaid period of work experience, while a cadetship is a paid program done while completing formal studies. Medhurst says internships are a crucial opportunity for students to “taste’’ their chosen industry before they graduate. “Not only do students learn about their field of study through direct experience but they get paid for it,’’ he says Navitas head of careers and internships Kieran Wallis advises those wanting to undertake a work experience program to consider where they ultimately want to be employed. “A lot of those KPMG-type internships are about getting a (large corporate) name on your resume – so if you’re looking to work for a Big 4 (company), certainly go and do an internship with someone like KPMG because you are getting your name out there,’’ he says. “If you are looking at running your own company, go as small SOARING: Cadet pilot Danielle Stokes, says without the support, her career would have stalled.
