    First Sunday of LentScripture

I will establish my covenant with you (Genisis 9:11)

Guide me in your truth and teach me, (Psalm 25:5)

he also went to preach to the spirits in prison (1 Peter 3:19)

The Spirit drove Jesus out into the desert, (Mark 1:12)

    Reflection

Can you enter the desert for 40 days of Lent?

What spiritual practices will you follow during Lent?

Who are the spirits in prison? What keeps them imprisoned?

In this material world where is the desert frees those who are bound?

If our mental image of Christ does nothing to deliver the world from its conclusion, this does not mean can find a truer light by plunging into the same confusion. What we need is a deeper understanding ofand the mystery of His presence in the world, in man. From this we will gain much true, less arroganthumble and merciful awareness of the true meaning of the church and of her mission to man. 1

    Movie Review

Christian Humility as Evidence of a True Believer

Humbled Christians are Obedient to God

Humble yourselves in the sight of the Lord, and He will lift you up." (James 4:10)

rue humility is a quality that Christian men and women often desire. It is not a value to be concealed as ifexpressed weakness, but rather a precious gift that should be revealed. Humility is the opposite of pride, hich caused Lucifer to be cast out from the presence of God. (See Pride) Jesus taught that "Everyone who

xalts himself will be humbled, and he who humbles himself will be exalted." And God works mightily

rough humble people, lifting them to heights they never dreamed of before.People who are genuinely humble do not draw attention to themselves or attempt to advance a personal

genda. Although the Biblical definition of humility is lowliness of mind, it is not frailty or timidity. Hum-le believers recognize that they don't know it all, and seek to know God who is all-knowing. Humilityakes one teachable and willing to submit to the instruction of God. The humble Christian is not a door-at or a pushover, but confidently puts their trust in God and does not act arrogantly.

Proverbs has many verses about humility, contrasting pride and haughtiness with humbleness. For ex-mple, "The pride of man will bring him shame, but with the humble is wisdom"or "Haughtiness precedesestruction, but humility leads to honor."These are promises and benefits that should discourage pride in aerson, and encourage one to learn true humility.

The perfect example of humility is Jesus Christ. In Matthew 11:29, Jesus states, "Take My yoke uponou and learn from Me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls." The

Word takes the place of the absent Christ. To learn from Jesus is to learn about Him in Scripture.Jesus prayed in the garden of Gethsemane that He might not have to suffer crucifixion, but then hum-

ed Himself and became obedient to the Father. He endured and excruciating death on the cross, knowingat God would raise Him from the dead, that He would ascend to sit at the right hand of the Fahter, andat there was a future reward. Likewise, believers are encouraged to humble themselves to the Lordship

f Jesus Christ, scrapping their selfish ambitions and instead entrusting their destiny to God.God rejects those who think their way is best. In truth, they reject Him first. Their heart is hardened off

the things of God, and therefore they are not vessels He can use. But for those who follow the examplef Jesus and humble themselves, recognizing God as the ultimate authority, they are assured that God will

ft them up.Written by Pete Miller. Retrieved from http://www.sharefaith.com

    Man on a Ledge

Sam Worthington is pushed to the limit in ththriller "Man on a Ledge." When an ex-cop falsely convicted of stealing a multimillion-dollar diamond and sentenced to 25 years in

pain is especially renowned for its Holy Weektraditions or Semana Santa. Holy Weekis a moveableast which begins on Palm Sunday (Domingo de Ramos) and runs through to Resurrection Sunday to seepanish Holy Week at its most extravagant, head for Andalusia, especially Seville. Failing that, Easter ispectacular in other cathedral cities, such as Valladolid, Leon or even Bilbao,r in many smaller towns. Virtually anywhere, in fact, except Madrid or Barce-na.A common feature in Spain is the almost general usage of the nazareno or

enitential robe for some of the participants in the processions. This garmentonsists in a tunic, a hood with conical tip (capirote) used to conceal the facef the wearer, and sometimes a cloak. The exact colors and forms of theseobes depend on the particular procession. These nazarenos carry processionalandles or rough-hewn wooden crosses, may walk the city streets barefoot,

and, in some places may carryshackles and chains on theirfeet as penance.

Even if you are not espe-cially interested in the reli-gious aspect, Spanish HolyWeek is impressive. The processions which take placethroughout the week are the centre of attention. Peoplecome out to follow or watch thepasos (floats). Often, when the paso is halted, the sound of a saeta is heardfrom a balcony. This is a flamenco song, a free-form la-ment, sung by one person with no accompaniment. It issupposed to be a spontaneous outbreak, though in reality

is usually expected, and the procession waits respectfullyntil it is over.Semana Santa at its most grandiose is to be found in

eville, where there are no fewer than 57 cofradas (with aopulation of less than seven hundred thousand) and the pro-essions may attract over a million spectators. The most popu-r are those of theJesus del Gran Poderand of the Virgen de

a Macarena (yes, like that omnipresent dance of a few yearsgo). The day of the week makes an important difference. Forxample, Thursday's processions tend to be good-natured, ifot high-spirited, while Good Friday's can be solemn to theoint of mournfulness.
