The student who wished we offered tutoring in fields other than math, science, and writing will be pleasantly surprised by the recent opening of DACC’s Business & Technology tutoring center. The vast majority of the comments reinforced what the survey showed—that students appreciate DACC faculty, staff, and the care they receive in supporting their education. The HLC also forwarded a series of “third party” comments about DACC. Since the Fall, we’ve been inviting the public to write directly to the HLC to share their opinions about us. Among the six leers that the HLC received, an alumnus, a high-school administrator, a community leader, and an anonymous citizen wrote to praise DACC for its record of student success, community service, and outreach to people in poverty. Of the other two leers, one was from a community member who wondered whether DACC provided training to assist with local workforce development. The other was from a school administrator who offered a suggestion to improve the billing process for high-school dual- credit classes. DACC’s Executive Director of Institutional Effectiveness and Planning Bob Mason is the College’s official liaison with the HLC visiting team. He is also active on HLC visiting teams. He says, “I have no doubt that our accreditors will be impressed when they read what students and the public have wrien about us. Our stakeholders have cast us in a very positive light.”

Survey and Letters Herald the Coming of the HLCNow’s when the accreditation process really starts to get interesting.

As you may know, DACC met the Feb. 4 deadline by submitting our Assurance Argument and all supporting documentation into an online directory for the exclusive review of the HLC’s visiting team. The deadline date was exactly one month before the four-member accreditation team is scheduled to arrive at DACC.

Meeting the deadline required Dr. Penny McConnell to devote the past six months to writing and consolidating the work of dozens of faculty and staff participating for more than three years on five Criterion teams. Maggie Hoover and her assistant Jung Ae Merrick posted about 1,500 pieces of evidence to link them to DACC’s submission.

With the Assurance Argument “locked,” the HLC has sent us two reports that may very well shape what the accrediting team may wish to investigate in greater detail when they arrive. One is a survey of students, and the other is a collection of letters that community members have made in response to an open invitation for public comments about DACC.

About 50 students responded to the online invitation to rate DACC on a 1 – 5 scale in 15 categories, with 5 representing the highest score. The overall average was an outstanding 4.22. Earning the highest scores were statements related to faculty and academic advisers. The only area of possible concern was a mixed response to how we provide student-loan information.

Most of the students participating in the survey also made use of the “comments” box to express their feelings about DACC. One student worried about

how well students would do in eight-week classes and another wanted to see more convenient class times in the sciences.

Among the six letters that the HLC received, an alumnus, a high-school administrator, a community leader, and an anonymous citizen wrote to praise DACC for its record of student success, community service, and outreach to people in poverty. Of the other two letters, one was from a community member who wondered whether DACC provided training to assist with local workforce development. The other was from a school administrator who offered a suggestion to improve the billing process for high-school dual-credit classes.

DACC’s Executive Director of Institutional Effectiveness and Planning Bob Mattson is the College’s official liaison with the HLC visiting team. He is also active on HLC visiting teams. He says, “I have no doubt that our accreditors will be impressed when they read what students and the public have written about us. Our stakeholders have cast us in a very positive light.”

Legislative UpdateThe 101st Illinois General Assembly (2019 and 2020) is underway with 15 new Senators and 37 new House Representatives. So far 2,276 bills have been filed in the House and 1,344 bills have been filed in the sen-ate. The deadline is February 15 to file new bills.

One of the first House bills to be heard is HB350 – 3% Rule. This bill will amend the downstate teachers and state universities articles of the Illinois Pension Code so that SURS members can again earn 6% (in-stead of 3%) annual increases without requiring the employer (DACC) to make additional employer con-tributions. If this passes both the House and Senate (the new Governor has already indicated he will sign it), it will be effective immediately.

Governor Pritzker is looking for ways to increase in-come for the state. One of those ways is to raise taxes including starting to tax retirement income (including our SURS pensions). Stay tuned . . . .

DACC Quarterly LunchThe Quarterly lunches will be the fourth Monday of every third month. The months were adjusted for 2019 to avoid conflicts with Thanksgiving and Christ-mas.
