When guests on Long Story Short talk about their child-hood, we listeners almost always hear about the adults who most influenced their early lives. In the case of recent guest Joy Abbott, I was struck by how

much her parents set the tone, in a deliberate way, for a successful

adulthood. Now in her 80s, Joy and longtime friend and pianist Betty Loo Taylor, will present an evening of jazz on PBS Hawaii this month. Her parents’ positive attitude was evident at her birth, when she received her name. “My father said that when I was born, I didn’t cry – I smiled. So he called me Joy. True story,” she chuckles. “It was a very happy childhood…We were always laughing…Both my mother and father had a sense of humor. And on weekends we’d always have a musi-cale, because my sister played the piano,” she said. The family, the Valderramas, lived in Wahiawa, growing their own vegetables and chickens for food. Joy’s father was educated in the Philippines as an accountant. When he moved to Hawaii to see “a new world,” Joy says, he couldn’t find work as an accoun-tant. So he re-invented himself as a barber, and did well, establishing several shops. He became personal barber to top-ranking officers at Schofield Barracks, developing friendly relationships with them. “My parents were all for achieving, accomplish-ments, and they thought that versatility would open doors,” Joy says on Long Story Short. Starting at age 6, Joy took music and dance les-sons at Schofield; she woke up early on weekends to learn tennis from her father; and she learned fine table manners (her dad passed them along from the generals’ homes). Soon she would be riding the bus a long way to Honolulu to attend Punahou School, where, as she recalls, back then only about 10% of the student body was Asian. A multi-sport athlete at Punahou, she relished competition.

“That was the goal – win! But I was a good loser,” Joy says. “My father said to be a sport when you lose and learn from your losses, because you can improve.” Another important piece of advice her par-ents gave her during her years as a country girl at Punahou was: Don’t be jealous of other people or envy what they have. She says this served her well throughout her life. “You can admire others, you can learn from others. That was the lesson,” she says. Her tennis and musical prowess, her comfort level with people of different backgrounds, her eagerness to keep learning – these gifts from her parents did indeed directly open doors. Joy had a career in entertainment and business. She was happily married to the great Broadway the-atre producer, director, playwright George Abbott (Damn Yankees, The Pajama Game), who died in 1995. She retains her namesake joy. rom an early age, he was warned: Don’t go into music! But Kaneohe’s Peter Medeiros will show he can have his musical cake and eat it, too, in a one-hour Na Mele special premiering on PBS Hawaii Presents, Thursday, September 26 at 9:00 pm. Together with Nate Stillman on bass, Josh Silva on guitar, and kumu hula Vicky Holt Takamine and her dancers, Peter illuminates a musical relationship he values – one between slack key and hula. It all started with his father. Albert Medeiros worked for the Territory of Hawaii in the 1930s, registering people who didn’t have birth certificates. That was the day job. But at night, he played and sang jazz with bands at two hotels. “Anything with strings, he could play,” Peter remembers. For Albert, though, playing music was more of a hobby. “His main thing was to keep the family going, put food on the table, pay the bills, just moving for-ward while having a good time,” Peter says. “Once you got a family, you better buckle down. You want that family to grow, you better take care of that family. So that’s what my father did.” And to Peter he said, “You don’t want to go into music.” Despite his father’s warning, music was Peter’s destiny. He first picked up the ukulele “’cause I wanted to. I was always used to hearing good music, people laughing, having a good time.” People like Jerry Santos, Keola Beamer, and com-poser Liko Martin. “Liko wrote the most beautiful, tender songs I had ever heard,” Peter says. They started performing to-gether, playing Liko’s music at events like the Diamond Head Crater Festival. “That was a lot of fun, playing local music in front of tens of thousands of people.” His slack key education continued with ukulele and slack key virtuoso Peter Moon. “I was the second person he’d ever taught slack key to. He was like an older brother. And he showed me everything he was doing.” But along with the tunings and the techniques,

Moon passed along a very important piece of advice: Don’t go into music. “Because I’d have to become a night person, and lose whatever family I have.” So Peter began teaching slack key through non-credit classes at the University of Hawaii instead. But even while working his day job, he couldn’t keep away from music, jamming with the likes of Sonny Chillingworth and Led-ward Kaapana. “Sonny’s approach to the music was very warm,” Peter recalls. “When you work with guys who make you sound better, and are doing their best to make you sound better, it’s just something else. It’s a gift. And now that Ledward lives across the street, we play every week. It reminds me of my father and his friends,” Peter laughs.

```Although he may have sidestepped his father’s warning about music, he hasn’t forgotten his father’s other words: Take care of the family. His wife Pam and daughter Raine are the first people acknowledged in his book, Hawaiian Slack Key: A Lifetime of Study. The many pictures on the walls of Peter’s Kaneohe home testify to his devotion to family. And he’ll be the first to describe himself as a family man. Not “musician.” “I’m not into being onstage,” Peter says. “I know that I could, but I know what it would cost. For me, the most important thing is that the family comes first.” But there’s still the music. What knowledge Peter has gathered through the years, he now passes on to his

students. “You’re telling a story,” he reminds them. “You’re not just passing on syllables. You’re passing on the context of the song and the other things which have to do with the song. It’s part of the things that I learned. “And don’t go into music!”

A Proud AccomplishmentIn 1992, Peter Medeiros was nominated for a Best Musical Composition Emmy for the music score he arranged and directed for producer Stephanie Castillo’s documentary, Simple Courage.

However, the memory is bittersweet for Medeiros, who faced a heartbreaking challenge during production. “My dad was dying while we were in production,” Medeiros recalls. “And I had to take care of him.”

Co-produced by and airing on Hawaii Public Televi-sion (as it was known then), the film shed light on the treatment of AIDS patients in the 1990s and the plight of Hansen’s Disease patients in the 19th and early 20th centuries through the lens of Father Damien de Veuster.

“It was a wonderful project because it addressed those issues which weren’t being looked at by the public, what was happening with all of our AIDS patients,” says Medeiros. “The prejudice they faced was so similar to what those afflicted with Hansen’s Disease went through in the previous century.

“Stephanie Castillo did a wonderful job putting this together, and it was hard because it was her first project. I felt that I could help in terms of providing some music, and insight into how that music would be utilized. It was worth putting this project out, one that I can say I’m proud of.”

“For me, the most important thing is that the family comes first.” The Medeiros family includes Peter’s wife Pam (right) and daughter Raine.

“My friend Gayle took me to meet Leslie one day,” recalls Joy. “I told Gayle I would love to do something to help raise funds for PBS Hawaii.”

From that meeting between PBS Hawaii Board member Gayle Harimoto, PBS Hawaii President and CEO Leslie Wilcox and entertainer Joy Abbott came “something:” Life Begins at 80...and the Music Never Ends: A Night With Joy Abbott and Betty Loo Taylor.

The special, airing Monday, September 16 at 7:30 pm, features the vocal stylings of Joy Abbott and the piano wizardry of Betty Loo Taylor as they evoke the Golden Era of the 40s, 50s and 60s.

Their performance for PBS Hawaii is just one more musical measure in a long, close relationship.

“Betty Loo and I have not only been great friends, but professional performers in tandem,” says Joy. “She herself said, ‘I won’t let you down, and I’d like to help PBS Hawaii.’”

A Productive Summer for HIKI N -O Teachers In August, PBS Hawaii presented the third of five regional HIKI N -O summer workshops for teachers. This one was held for Hawaii Island teachers in the idyllic setting of Hawaii Preparatory Academy (HPA) in Kamuela. Twenty-one teachers from Hawaii Island schools participated in the intensive, hands-on workshop on digital storytelling led by HIKI N -O executive producer Robert Pennybacker, managing editor Sue Yim, and editor/associate producer Lawrence Pacheco. Veteran broadcast news reporter Jim Mendoza of Hawaii News Now presented “The Anatomy of a News Story.” Jim screened the finished version of a news story about a neglected Waipahu graveyard, demystifying the storytelling process by showing the raw footage. Teachers observed how the story’s pieces were collected in real time.

Independent producer and HIKI N -O mentor Ryan Kawamoto held a session on “Finding the Human Story,” showing clips from his documentary about Hawaii’s World War II Japanese internment camps. On Day Two, the teachers put what they learned into action. In groups of five, each team shot and edited a two-minute, single interview-based news story.
