A Guide to Installing CMGL Software on Windows Overview • 1

Overview

Introduction The Computer Modelling Group Ltd. (CMGL) installation procedure was developed to help you install CMGL software onto your computer and configure it to work correctly with CMGL software.

It is very important that you follow these instructions and install the software using the installation program provided.

Installing and configuring software under Windows can be tricky. The CMGL Setup program makes it a snap.

The installation program creates the directory structure and registry entries needed by your CMGL software. It also installs all the files necessary for your CMGL software to work correctly. If you do not use the installation program provided, your software will not function. You cannot simply move, copy or delete your CMGL software using the Windows Explorer. If you do, your software will not function correctly.

Before You Install You will need to do several things before you start the setup program:

• Ensure the computer on which you are installing the CMGL software meets the minimum system requirements.

• Determine the sort of licensing model you will be using. Computers can have their own licenses, or they can get their licenses from other computers called license servers.

• If you are using network licenses you will need to know which computer will be the network server and what is that computer's name on the network.

NOTE: Your CMGL software will not function correctly until you reboot the computer.

Multiple Installations Many clients like to keep multiple installations of the CMGL software on their systems. If you are adding and removing different versions of the CMGL software, you can prevent difficulties by:

2 • Overview A Guide to Installing CMGL Software on Windows

Removing the software you do not wish to use first.

Add the software in chronological order. All CMGL releases have a version number that is also a date so adding in order should be easy.

System Requirements (32-bit) In order for your CMGL software to run correctly, you will need the following minimum hardware and software configuration:

• A Pentium class computer (Pentium 4 recommended). To determine the version of Windows installed on your computer, open the System control panel and read the System information under the General tab. For each kind of Windows, you will need the following levels (or higher):

Windows 2000: 5.00.2195

Windows XP: 2002

• One of the following supported operating systems (U.S. English, Simplified Chinese, Spanish and Portuguese versions only):

Microsoft Windows 2000 Microsoft Windows XP Microsoft Windows Server 2003

• 4 GB of Random Access Memory.

• A hard disk with 500 MB of free disk space to install all of the CMGL applications.

• A Super VGA monitor capable of displaying thousands (16 bit) of colours at 1024x768 resolution (21" high-resolution monitor recommended).

• Microsoft Mouse or compatible pointing device.

• ISO-9660 compliant CD-ROM drive.

• Ethernet Card.

• TCP/IP installed and configured.

Clients using Builder and Results should also have the following:

• An OpenGL graphics card with at least 32 MB video RAM.

System Requirements (x64 software) The requirements for running the x64 software are the same as for the 32-bit software (above), with the following exceptions:

• A Pentium or Xeon with Intel ΕΜ64Τ.

• One of the following supported operating systems (U.S. English only):

Microsoft Windows XP Professional x64 Edition Microsoft Windows Vista Business x64 Edition

System Recommendations In many cases, the following equipment is not necessary, but will enhance the experience of using your CMGL software greatly.

• If you intend to run jobs in excess of 500,000 grid blocks, a 64-bit processor is highly recommended.

A Guide to Installing CMGL Software on Windows Overview • 3

• A video card capable of dual output and/or stereo graphics.

• Stereo viewing may require additional equipment, such as stereo glasses.

• Two 21 inch monitors.

• Multiple processors

• 16 GB of RAM or more.

Selecting Setup Type CMGL software supports four (4) different setup types:

Choose the license type that best suits your needs. Notebook users are encouraged to use the Stand-alone setup type.

• Solo Server. A Network Server that only issues codes for itself.

• Network Server.

• Network Client.

• Commuting.

You should determine which setup type would meet your requirements prior to starting the installation procedure. If you are using network licenses, you should determine which computers the CMGL software will be installed upon. One (and only one) of these computers will be the Network License server – use the Network Server setup type when installing the CMGL software on this computer. All of the other computers will be Network Clients – use the Network Client setup type when installing on these computers. Each client will need to know the name of the license server computer.

NOTE: CMGL software now supports network installations. System Administrators interested in this option should consult the section "Installation for System Administrators" later in this manual.

Solo Server The Solo Server setup type indicates the presence of a license server that only serves license requests from itself.

Select this type of setup when you install the software on a stand-alone PC or when you do not wish to share a license between different PCs on a network.

Network Server The Network Server setup type installs all the files necessary for the computer to operate as the floating license network server.

If you decide to use floating licenses on a network, you must determine on which computer to install the network license server. You should have only one computer acting as a network license server for CMGL software on your network.

All other computers on the network should use the Network Client setup type described below.

4 • Overview A Guide to Installing CMGL Software on Windows

Network Client The Network Client setup installs all the files necessary to run your CMGL software on a networked computer.

When using floating or commuter licenses, one (and only one) computer on the network should be designated as the Network Server (see above).

Select this setup type when you install the software on a networked PC and you wish to use the floating licenses already installed on the Network Server on the network. You must install your CMGL software on each and every computer you intend to run it using the Network Client setup type.

Commuting The Commuting setup installs all the files necessary to run your CMGL software on a notebook computer

Select this setup type when you are installing on a notebook computer that gets its license keys from a Network Server. It will use the Network Server whenever it is on the network and can also check out licenses for use when you are away from the network (for up to 30 days).

NOTE: The only way you can change your setup type after you install the software is to uninstall it and reinstall again with the new setup type selected.

Using the Setup Program The setup program provided by CMGL uses a wizard interface to assist you in installing and configuring your CMGL software.

The following is an overview of each dialog box in the wizard.

NOTE: You may not see every dialog of the installation wizard. The dialogs displayed depend on the platform and the choices you make earlier in the install.

Welcome Dialog

You can simply click past the Welcome dialog. It does contain one useful piece of information though – the version of the installation CD-ROM. This is the date, in YYYY-MM-DD format.

The version should match the number printed on the CD-ROM itself, and it will also correspond to the entry in the “Add/Remove Programs” control panel for when you want to uninstall the software.

License Agreement Dialog

This dialog shows the End User License Agreement for CMGL

The terms of the license agreement do not supersede any contract that you may have signed with Computer Modelling Group Ltd.

You need to answer “Yes” to the agreement for installation to proceed.

Read Me Dialog

The Read Me dialog contains important information about your CMGL software.

You should take a moment to read the information in this dialog box.

Select Platforms Dialog

Please note this dialog will not appear unless you are installing on a computer with an x64 processor with an x64 edition of Windows XP or Windows Vista as the operating system.

In addition to installing the x64 versions of the CMGL software, you can also install the 32-bit versions.

You do not need to install both versions. We recommend you only install only the Win_x64 software.

Select Licensing Type Dialog The Select Licensing Type dialog allows you to choose which licensing model to use. There are four options:

License is locked to this computer only – good for stand-alone computers or notebooks or anywhere where you want the licensing to only apply to the current computer.

This computer will be a License Server – In addition to running the CMGL software on this computer, other computers can obtain licenses from it.

This computer gets its license from a Server – If you already have a license server, then this computer can obtain licenses from it.

This computer is a commuter – for notebooks that normally obtains their licenses from a network server, but need to their own licenses for those occasions when they are away from the home network.

NOTE: The only way you can change your Licensing Type after you install the software is to uninstall it and reinstall it again with the new Licensing Type selected.

A Guide to Installing CMGL Software on Windows Installation • 11

CMGL supports two models of licensing, solo and network . Solo indicates that each computer is responsible for its own licensing. Network indicates that there will be a single computer acting as a License Server with other computers obtaining licenses from it.

If you are going to be using solo licensing, you should install the software on each computer and choose “License is locked to this computer only” . You will need to send us the Host ID information for each computer and load the license codes we send you onto each computer.

If you are using Network Licensing, you will need to designate a single computer as a network server and the remaining computers as network clients or commuters.

For the single network server, select “This computer will be a License Server”. You will need to enter the computer’s name or IP address in the next dialog. Make a note of this information, as you will need it for future network client installations.

For the network clients, select “This computer gets its license from a Server”. You will need to know the name or IP address of the network server.

If you have a notebook computer that would normally be a network client, but will occasionally be away from the network, you should select “This computer is a commuter”. This will allow it to check out (commute) licenses and use them for extended periods of time while away from the network.

Select Server Only or Complete Dialog

Please note that this dialog will not appear unless you previously selected the licensing type “This computer will be a license server”.

If you select “Install the License Server only” option, the CMGL software will NOT be installed on the machine but the machine can still be used to get licenses from. In other words, the machine will act as just a license server.

12 • Installation A Guide to Installing CMGL Software on Windows

License Server Name Dialog

Please note that this dialog will not appear unless you previously selected a licensing type where the License Server Name is important.

Enter the name or IP address of the license server. The name can be either the node name - “Godzilla” or the fully qualified name with domain – “godzilla.monsterisle.org”. IP addresses should be of the form “123.45.67.89”.

Additional Options Dialog

This dialog is for selecting miscellaneous options of the CMGL software. Currently there is only one option: Adding Spanish simulator manuals to the Launcher’s Help Menu.

Note that the manual files are always installed. This option simply allows Launcher to easily access them.

Host ID Information Dialog

After the installation has finished copying files and setting up the system, you will be asked if you wish to generate a hostid. If you choose Yes, the next dialog will appear.

Fill in the required information and save or print the information out. You can then email or fax it to CMGL. When we have received the information, we will make license strings that will allow you to use your CMGL software.

You can generate your Host ID at any time after installation by opening the Configure License utility and selecting “Get Host ID…” For more information, see “A Guide to Using the CMGL Configure License Utility”

Computers that do not need to generate a Host ID (network clients and commuters) will not see this dialog.

InstallShield Wizard Complete Dialog

This dialog lets you know that the installation has completed.

We recommend that you restart your computer before using your CMGL software, as some applications need to be initialized at the first startup after installation. If you choose not to reboot and your CMGL software is not working properly, try manually rebooting first.

Entering Your Authorization Codes

We can email the codes back to you if you provide us with an email address

When CMGL receives your Host ID, we will generate authorization codes for each software application that you are entitled to receive. CMGL will then fax or email your authorization codes back to you.

When you receive the authorization codes, start up the Configure License utility. You can enter the authorization codes by typing them in the fields for each application, or you can read them directly from a text file. When you have entered your authorization codes, click on the Verify button to ensure that they are correct. Once you have established that the codes are correct click on the OK button to save your codes and update the license manager.

NOTE: If you are using Network licenses, you will need to restart the license manager before you can use the new codes.

For additional information on the Configure License utility, see the manual titled: A Guide to Using the Configure License Utility.

Using CMGL Software with a Hardware Key The Sentinel RMS licensing can be used with hardware keys (dongles) that attach to your computer. A dongle is not required to use the CMGL software and this section should be considered optional.

NOTE: You should not install the Sentinel dongle drivers unless you already have a dongle from a previous CMGL installation, or you have been directed to do so by CMGL technical support.

16 • Installation A Guide to Installing CMGL Software on Windows

A dongle is used as an additional Host ID for your computer. As this Host ID is part of a portable piece of hardware, you can move it to different computers. If the computers are set up correctly, only the computer with the dongle will be able to use the software.

Four things must be true for you to use the CMGL software with a dongle:

4) The computer must have the CMGL software installed as described earlier in this manual.

5) You must have the dongle drivers installed – this allows the licensing software to communicate with the dongle when it is attached. The procedure for doing this is described below.

6) The authorization codes for the CMGL software must be installed and they must lock to the dongle’s Host ID.

7) The dongle must be attached to the appropriate port. CMGL supports dongles that attach to the parallel port or to the USB port.

Installing the Dongle Drivers on 32-bit Windows 1) Log onto the machine as administrator . If your company has multiple levels of

administrator, log in as the one that has the highest level of access to the computer.

2) Make sure the installation CD-ROM is inserted into the machine.

3) Locate the Self-Extracting Archive:

/EXTRAS/SENTINEL/SPI71_32.EXE.

4) Start the program by double-clicking it. A dialog box titled Sentinel Protection Installer – InstallShield Wizard will appear.

5) Follow the on-screen instructions.

6) Reboot the computer.

Installing the Dongle Drivers on Windows x64 1) Log onto the machine as administrator . If your company has multiple levels of

administrator, log in as the one that has the highest level of access to the computer.
